Brittany Maynard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 2, 2014.
Brittany Maynard, 29, who became nationwide news when she announced her decision to end her own life two days after her husband's birthday, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014.

Maynard was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumor and given a terminal diagnosis. She moved, along with her husband, to Portland, Oregon to use their Death with Dignity Act to end her own life before the tumor destroyed her abilities.

In recent months, Maynard became an advocate for the right-to-die movement and worked to complete her bucket list, helped by contributions from financial donors.

Brittany, it's been almost 7 years since you have left Earth.. and I still think of you often. You had courage and strength at the darkest of times, and you brought positive changes to the world as we know it. Your voice shined a light on compassion for those who need it most. God has welcomed you into his kingdom with open and loving arms. God puts us here, to fulfill our mission he has set for us...and you fulfilled your mission with absolute Grace and Beauty. Forever thought of and remembered..God bless you and your family, ethereal angel.

To Brittney's family, I just saw her husband on Oprah, i felt his pain as he still is grieving as a lot of people are. This brave young lady has inspired a lot of people. She had one of the hardest decisions to make and i would have done the same thing in her situation. I pray for her family to find comfort and peace and know they were everything she needed and because of them is why she had the strength to carry on with such grace, she was an amazing person you can tell. She was lucky to have them, and you could just feel the love of this family. I wish all families could have what they had. May Brittney rest in peace and i know she will be flying high in heaven, happy as can be.

I am so glad Brittany was able to do things her way. I have told my family for years that I didn't want to be a burden or a vegetable. If the doctors won't help end it, I hope someone will. Brittany's family should be praised too for their support of her wishes. It takes a strong family to let go of a loved one.

If there is a name that should be entered as a HERO, Brittany Maynard should be it! What a remarkable story and life she led. I can only imagine the horror and emptiness her family, friends and loved ones are feeling but to know how each and every one of you stood by her and her decisions definitely defined your character and integrity. This was in no way an easy choice as a human but the fact that you knew she would have to suffer and chose not to and knowing that she would be going to a much better place, you are all the most selfless people I have ever heard of in my life. God bless each and every one of you. I am a true believer in the afterlife and how they can communicate with you. I know Brittany is probably going to take a while to show you she is still around you because I am certain that she was received with such a special purpose. I have read many stories of people that pass and their sad ending and shamefully I don't think I can remember a single one of them but I guarantee you that I will NEVER forget Brittany Maynard. The only thing I would wish for is that I would have personally known her but deep down I feel I do because of her story. She left nothing undone or unsaid. Not many of us have that closure. I don't like the word closure but couldn't think of anything else because this is definitely not a closure! I thank you for sharing your loved one with the world! God bless each and every one of you

On the cusp of thirty

I wasn't there/
So I cannot say/
But I like to think/
It went this way./
The sheets were crisp./
Of your favorite scent,/
In the air a wisp./
Knowing your last moments/
Would be spent/
With those so very close to you/
They you loved so true/
They that helped you through/
The ups and downs that left you blue./
They that walked the path with you/
And sat beside your bed/
And held your hand,/
And kissed your head/

I was not there beside your bed/
I can only guess what was said/
But I like to think it made you smile/
Even if for the shortest while/
Before the elixir took you away/
While secretly around you they prayed you could stay./
And perhaps your husband leaned over you/
And kissed your lips while they were still warm/
Looked into your eyes and saw the ocean storm,/
The moon while it rose and the sun while it set,/
The wide open sea, and a country morning: dewy wet./
And though he had promised his eyes would stay dry,/
As he gently lowered your eyelids, he began to cry./
And the play that was your life, was done./
But the courage you exhibited lives on!

I admire Brittany's courage and greatly respect her decision to terminate her life. Hopefully Brittany's decision will pave the way for other states to allow a person to terminate their life when they're facing terminal illness without any hope for improvement. It's so sad Brittany was so young when she had to make this decision but I firmly believe that no one should be forced to endure a slow painful death .

I am so touched and inspired by your story. What a brave and courageous young woman. You can't change what happens to you in life but you can choose how you want
to deal with it. Brittany choose to end her life surrounded by the people she loved most and with dignity. Her words "Change your thoughts... change the world profoundly touched me. May you rest in peace. You lived your life with such purpose and have inspired so many more than you will ever know. I pray for your husband and family that they will find continued strength in the legacy you left behind.

What a beautiful soul. Although I did not know this vivacious woman, my heart was touched the very instant I read her story and watched her interviews. My heart ached with absolute sadness that something so horrible would intrude on the life of someone as Brittany. In listening to the words she spoke about life and her loved ones, she made something absolutely clear; I as a human being, daughter, wife and mommy have unintentionally taken this life for granted and no longer want to spend another moment without embracing only the things that matter and loving as if today was my last...thank you Brittany. My prayers go out to her family and friends. Although Brittany was taken from them too soon I pray that they feel peace in their hearts by knowing such a magnificent being. Thank you Brittany and bless you sweet girl.

Dear Ms. Zeigler,
You probably don't remember me but you taught my son and daughter when you were a science teacher in Orange County, California. I felt compelled to write to you because I, too, have lost a child. My son died in a tragic accident 5 years ago this month. The grief of losing a child is overwhelming and everlasting. It changes everything. As I continue on this grief journey all I can say is the pain is still there but some days it isn't as intense. I wish you strength for the journey. Blessings to you..

I'm so deeply moved by Brittany's profound grace. If our lives are a drop in the ocean of humanity, then her one drop made a beautiful wave that circled the world. I've listened to Brittany through her videos and shed tears that this dear and lovely young woman did not have the chance to experience all that she dreamed. I've come to care so much about her and will share her videos with my family. Brittany will teach about grace and courage, and what really matters. I made a montage of Brittany's photos, and put them on a wall in my office that is dedicated to great woman who inspire me. To Brittany's mom, husband and friends, please accept my deepest condolences. All I can share is the certainty that Brittany reached the pinnacle of what it is to be a fully realized human being, an achievement not often reached by those of us who have the luxury of the longest of years. God bless.

Family member, please indulge me as I envision a better life for Brittany.
Imagine Brittany in Paradise! Each morning, she awakens feeling rested and eager to begin her day. She has no aches or pains. Any infirmities she once had are gone. All her senses--sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste function perfectly. Her energy is abundant, his work is enjoyable, her friends are many, and all her worries are gone. Such will be the blessings she can enjoy under God's Kingdom. (Matthew 6:9-10). What a grand reunion that will be for all who loved and adored Brittany. My heartfelt condolences for your loss!

Brave on so many fronts. As is her family who had to go thru their own journey with such a tough decision. I have a friend who just died from the same tumor and her husband and had she taken the same route as Brittany, she would have lived out her last days with joy and dignity instead of 6 months further of pain and deterioration for all concerned.
