Dave Arneson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 10, 2009.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Dave Arneson, one of the co-creators of the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy game and a pioneer of role-playing entertainment, died after a two-year battle with cancer, his family said Thursday. He was 61.

Arneson's daughter, Malia Weinhagen of Maplewood, said her father died peacefully Tuesday in hospice care in St. Paul.

Arneson and Gary Gygax developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys. It eventually was turned into video games, books and movies. Gygax died in March 2008.

"The biggest thing about my dad's world is he wanted people to have fun in life," Weinhagen said. "I think we get distracted by the everyday things you have to do in life and we forget to enjoy life and have fun.

"But my dad never did," she said. "He just wanted people to have fun."

Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's still growing in popularity.

"(Arneson) developed many of the fundamental ideas of role-playing: that each player controls just one hero, that heroes gain power through adventures, and that personality is as important as combat prowess," according to a statement from Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc. that produces Dungeons & Dragons.

Blackmoor, a game Arneson was developing before D&D, was the "first-ever role-playing campaign and the prototype for all (role-playing game) campaigns since," the company said.

Arneson and Gygax were dedicated tabletop wargamers who recreated historical battles with painted miniature armies and fleets. They met in 1969 at a convention, and their first collaboration, along with Mike Carr, was a set of rules for sailing-ship battles called "Don't Give Up the Ship!"

In later years, Dave published other role-playing games and started his own game-publishing company and computer game company. He also taught classes in game design. He was inducted into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design Hall of Fame in 1984.

Weinhagen said her father enjoyed teaching game design at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Fla., in recent years, where he taught students to make a solid set of rules for their games.

"He said if you have a good foundation and a good set of rules, people would play the game again," Weinhagen said.

Arneson is survived by Weinhagen and two grandchildren. A public memorial service was planned April 20, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Bradshaw Funeral Home in St. Paul.

For Dave...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

My brother loved your games Dave. His name was Frank, and he died when he was 35 in 1993 of Spinal Menengitis. He was taken too early as you were too. Please say hello to him in Heaven from me and sit down and play a few rounds of Dungeons and Dragons with him. He was very good and will give you a run for your money, or whatever you play for in Heaven. See you when I get there.

Thank you Mr.Arneson, and may your percentiles all be favorable in the next adventure.

Lean On God
By: Charles G. Turner, Sr.

In life our love ones and friends sometimes suddenly pass away
For many reasons we don’t understand
Our hearts become heavy with sorrow
Just remember to pray to God and put it in his hands

As time goes on there are days when we feel sad
When that happens think of the good times you’ve had
Lift up your head and carry on
And ask God to make you strong

Lean on God through your stress and strain
And he will surely ease the hurt and pain

Dave,
I knew you a short while from various conventions and from what I remember is that you always had a good word to say about anyone you met. I got started with D&D when it was chainmail still. I loved it then and love it now. To see both the creators of this game we so love pass and go forever from our lives is tragic indeed. torch is dimmed and forever gone now. The world will never be the same again.

So many lives and imaginations have been changed by this game that Dave had a hand in making... not to mention the lives he touched through teaching and just being the man he was. His soul continues to move on through those that he taught and those that play his creations today. Go in Peace Dave, for you will be missed but knowing you go somewhere better then where we are now means that it inspires us, that someday we too will be gaming with you again.

My deepest condolences!! Dave and Gary were geniuses in their own right. They both did so much for the Gaming/RPG world that I shudder to think how lacking the gaming world would be without their contributions/creations.

When Gary passed away a year or so ago I was crushed. Now I am devastated because Dave has chosen to join Gary at that huge Gaming Table in the Afterlife.

Please accept my condolonces on your loss. Dave's passing onto to the big D&D game in heaven is a loss felt by all of us who were touched by his works. But of course our loss is quite minor when compared to that of a daughter, a grandchild or a father. Dave will be remembered through the ages for this contributions to this world in the form of an amazing game that has brought joy and friendship to millions the world over.

I had the pleasure of getting to hang out and know Dave over a dinner and 2 lunches these past 3 months as Dave was going stir crazy being cooped up at home so I offered to come pick him up and go grab some lunch as I work close by where he lived. His stories and insights into where role playing games came from and where it is today were indeed very interesting. Those conversations will always be held in a very special place for me personally. He did love getting his "two cookies to go" after we ate at the Highland Cafe.

The next time our gaming groups gather, we will raise a toast and salute the life and the legacy of Dave Arneson.

God Speed Dave. Be sure to look up my daughter Lillian in heaven and teach her how to sling dice "old school". While you are at it - be sure to get Keith Parkinson, Dennis Mize and Gary Gygax to game with you all as well.

Regards,

Dave introduced me, my brother and many others to Blackmoor and D & D. He was truly a genuine and gentle person. I've known him since high school when we would "game" in his parent's basement. I will truly miss him. When I last spoke with him he was a upbeat as always. He loved his dad and his daughter a great deal and I want to express my deep since of loss to them and hope they find comfort in their memories of this tremendous man.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I never played D&D, but my brother did. He wasn't very social in high school, but found friends through the game. He loved the game so much that one time he snuck out of the house at 3 in the morning to meet his friends and be able to play the game without any interruptions. When all the parents found them later that morning, they were all sitting around playing D&D. I appreciate Dave for helping kids like my brother find their way through those awkward teenage years.

Dave was a very exceptional person. Always willing to help when asked and never asked for something in return. He helped my brother in I develop a game of our own. I enjoyed many a day gaming with Dave. Games like DGUTS, Napoleonics, Blackmoore, and others. Dave was all about fun and enjoying life. He will be missed, but not forgotten.

Like so many others my life has been made richer by Dave's brain child, D&D. The game I enjoyed with friends and siblings has become a family legacy that my children and I enjoyed together and which I'm confident they will pass along to their kids. Dave and Gary really gave us all a wonderful gift through their outstanding innovation and imagination! God Bless Dave, and God Speed!

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I didn't know Dave very well; his parents had the cabin next to my parents and he came to visit them often. I had an early exposure to gaming thanks to my cousin Mike who went on to work with Dave and Gary. When D&D came out, my friends and I spent entire weekends playing. They understood the single most important aspect of human creativity: imagination; which in many ways has been lost as technology has advanced. Dave was a gentle soul and a true pioneer.

As a lifelong D&D player, I appreciate Dave for the wonderful gift he gave the world. I know it has shaped countless young lives like it did mine, and encouraged people to use their imaginations. I unfortunately never got to meet Dave or Gary in person, but I feel the world is a much more empty place now that Dave is gone. My condolences to his family and loved ones.
