Ed Lauter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 16, 2013.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Veteran character actor Ed Lauter, whose long, angular face and stern bearing made him an instantly recognizable figure in scores of movies and TV shows during a career that stretched across five decades, died Wednesday. He was 74.

Lauter died of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer most commonly caused by asbestos exposure, said his publicist, Edward Lozzi.

Whether he was an irascible authority figure, a brutal thug or a conniving con man, Lauter's presence made him all but impossible to miss in any film he was in. That was so even on those occasions when he was playing a character more bumbling than menacing, although menacing was clearly his forte.

He was the brutal prison guard who was Burt Reynolds' nemesis in the 1974 comedy-drama "The Longest Yard" and the sleazy gas station attendant in Alfred Hitchcock's last film, "The Family Plot." In "Death Wish 3," he was the violent cop who teams with Charles Bronson's vigilante to rid New York City's streets of criminals, not by incarcerating them but by killing them.

More recently he was the butler to Berenice Bejo's French ingenue in the 2011 Oscar-winning film "The Artist."

Lauter described himself in a 2010 interview with Cinema Shock magazine as a "turn" actor, someone who shows up at some point in the film and suddenly turns the plot in a different direction.

He credited the cast of real-life characters he grew up observing in his native Long Beach, New York, as inspiring many of the characters he would go on to portray.

He laughed at being someone frequently recognized in public for his roles.

"But sometimes people don't know my name," he said. "They'll say, 'Oh, yeah! There's that guy! You were in ... you were in ... "

He was in "Trouble With the Curve" in 2011 with Clint Eastwood and in "Born on the Fourth of July" with Tom Cruise. He was also in "The New Centurions" with George C. Scott and in "My Blue Heaven," ''Revenge of the Nerds 2" and "Not Another Teenage Movie," among many other films.

TV appearances included "The Office," ''ER," ''Murder, She Wrote" and "The Rockford Files."

Among his favorite roles, he said in 2010, was "The Longest Yard."

He recalled that director Robert Aldrich told him he didn't have to read for the part but would have to accompany Aldrich to a nearby park so the director could ensure that he could throw a football like a quarterback would. When he hit former NFL receiver Pat Studstill, who was a stuntman in the movie, right in his jersey number with the first pass, Lauter said Aldrich told him he had the job.

Lauter, who continued to work until a few months ago, had completed roles in several films still to be released.

He is survived his wife, Mia, and four children.

I am a little bit late to this site. I was a little surprised to hear of Mr. Lauter's passing. He always seemed so strong and healthy in his many roles on screen. I saw him in so many movies. He was so versatile, as well as being so good at his profession. He was a credit to his craft and leaves a terrific legacy. My belated condolences to his family.

i wss friends with ed and marni when they lived in hasbrouck heights in the mid 80s. Ameka and Anton were toddlers and Ed was always a sweetheart. We went to each other's parties and ppl always recognized him and he could not have been kinder or more generous. He would see them a few times each summer when we had parties at our cottage in Pines Lake NJ and would always remember their names. Very talented and lovely man. Gone way too soon. I worked with Ed Lauter on the film YOUNGBLOOD (with Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, and Cynthia Gibb). Ed was a prince of a guy! A consummate actor and professional with an amazingly strong constitution... so I couldn't believe it when I saw this news. He was too young, too strong, too solid. My deepest heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and friends.

If Ed Lauter hadn't been born, he would have to have been invented. He was a great actor, whether you loved his characters, or hated them. Whether he was bad guy persona with a heart of gold, or the consummate "second fiddle" guy, I loved watching him on the screen.

Rest easy, Mr. Lauter. You've entertained millions, and the world is a better place for your having lived.

Ed and I were classmates from the 5th grade through HS graduation. He was a great guy - and a wonderful actor.

I last saw him in Santa Fe, NM about 6 years ago when he was there making a movie starring Liam Neeson. Ed, Liam, my wife and I chatted for almost an hour - and Liam commented that Ed was someone he respected as an actor.

I am deeply saddened by Ed's passing. My sincere condolences to his family.

October 17, 2013

Ed was easily recognizable and always acted the part of who he played. Many actors today can only play themselves.

He seemed easy to relate to and struck me as one of those actors you'd enjoy meeting. Had the opportunity to meet Clint Eastwood many years ago skiing and it was lots of fun. Wish I had a venue to have told Ed how much I enjoyed many of his roles. RIP big guy.

Ed was one of my fathers best friends since childhood and never forgot where he came from or his old friends. A few of the old guys from his childhood got together recently in the carolinas and played golf and had a lot of laughs... Ed was a very funny guy......and unlike most of his "bad guy" characters, was a very sincere and warm hearted man. My dad told me that on the first day of their golf trip Ed bought one of those visors with the spiked hair and wore it the entire 4 days.....even out to dinner....he liked having hair on top of his head for a change....as I said he was a funny and fun man. I am terribly saddened to hear of his passing too soon. My sincerest condolences to his wife Mia and his four children. Peace, Michael Glynn
