Elrod Hendricks Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 22, 2005.
BALTIMORE (AP) - Elrod Hendricks, who spent nearly four decades as a player and coach with the Baltimore Orioles, died Wednesday. He was 64.

Hendricks died at Baltimore-Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, hospital spokeswoman Allison Eatough said. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Hendricks got most of the playing time at catcher for the Orioles on teams that went to three consecutive World Series from 1969-71, sharing duties with Andy Etchebarren.

Hendricks also played briefly for the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees during a 12-year major league career that lasted from 1968-79. He went 4-for-11 (.364) with a home run and four RBIs to help Baltimore defeat the Cincinnati Reds in the 1970 World Series.

He also appeared in the 1976 World Series for the Yankees against Cincinnati.

Hendricks broke into professional baseball in 1959 and made his major league debut with the Orioles in 1968. He played in 711 games - including 658 with the Orioles - before retiring in 1979.

He was made the bullpen coach following the 1977 season and was a player-coach in 1978-79. Hendricks became a fixture in Baltimore by holding the position as bullpen coach for 28 years, the longest coaching tenure in Orioles history.

Hendricks was relieved of that position in October, in part because he had a mild stroke in April. He was to be reassigned to another position within the organization, one that would enable him to take advantage of his popularity within the Baltimore community.

But Hendricks was hurt by the demotion.

"Definitely, the hardest part will be not being on the field," he said at the time. "That's what I know, that's what I've done for the past 44 years, and I did a good job while I was here."

Hendricks would have turned 65 on Thursday.

The 2005 season marked the 37th that Hendricks served in a Baltimore uniform as a player or coach, another club record. He also had the longest active coaching tenure with one club in the big leagues.

Hendricks lost 20 pounds while recovering from the stroke he had in April. He returned in May and was relieved of much of his workload, but then-manager Lee Mazzilli wanted to have him with the team because of his popularity in the locker room.

"It's good to have him back. I think the guys in the clubhouse and the staff were really glad to see him," Mazzilli said at the time.

Hendricks was delighted to be back, because the ballpark was home to him.

"I know one thing, I missed it," he said. "I don't know what it's going to be like in retirement, but I know I don't like it. I watched the games every night."

Weeks later, after he settled in, Hendricks said, "The journey back was pretty smooth. I think coming to the ballpark really helped."

Hendricks had a reputation for showing up at all sorts of community events. On Monday, he played Santa Claus at a charity event in downtown Baltimore. About 100 children climbed onto his lap to tell him what they wanted for Christmas.

"It's a joy to watch the faces, the smiles, watching them open the gifts," he said afterward. "It's a warm feeling. It's easy for me to be involved. It takes me back to being a kid, too. I hear some funny things and have to hold back my laughter."

He was saddened, though, at the prospect of going through the upcoming season without a uniform.

"It's definitely very difficult," he said, "because I've been on the field for so long."

To the Hendricks family:

I know you never met me, but I wanted to say the Mr. Elrod Hendricks had a positive impact on my life. As a kid living in Kansas City, Ellie would always be kind enough to sign autographs and talk with me at Royal's Stadium. As a young black male, he always stressed to me to do good in school and be a person of good character. Since that time, I have gone on to be a scholar at my university, and a respected educator in Missouri. I had a chance to see him about five years ago when the Orioles were back in Kansas City. I was out on the field and saw him near the dugout and went and spoke to him. Although he didn't remember me, which was okay because I'm sure he's been nice to a lot of people, I thanked him for his advice....and Ellie gave me a big hug.

He was truly a wonderful man who left a lasting impression on my life. Only last night did I realize something was wrong when I saw the black 44 on the sleeves of the Orioles players and went into a panic, because I know Ellie is 44 and what those patches meant. I don't know how I did not hear of his passing, but I wanted to take the time to share this with the family and to let you to know he is missed. May God Bless You Elrod Hendricks, your wife and children. May the Lord take you out to the new ball game. Rest In Peace.

Merle, Ian, and Ryan,

My heart goes out to all of you. As you know Ellie was very special to me as well. I loved him very much as you know. Take peace in his memory and the knowledge that he remains a bit in all of us. He enriched my life in a way that will never be matched. I never knew what a father was until he came into my life. I could always count on him to be there with an ear and knew that he would never hold back on his opinion. His "baby girl Jenny" will always love her grandpa Ellie. Adam & Gabriel will always hold Ellie close in their hearts.

Take care Merle, you are one of the strongest women I know. God Bless all of you and comfort you in your loss. Love, Paulene

Ellie was very special to my family. When he would come to Seattle, I would go and see him at the park, and then sit with him (in his hotel Bar), and listen to stories for hours after the game. He really loved jazz and we would talk about that.

One of the best stories was, after a loss to Seattle. Bj Surhoff was sitting at the bar, and Ellie and my mother and I were sitting at a table. I wanted to meet Bj, but didn't want to be rude. Ellie found out, and stood up and said. "Bj, come here. There is a young man that wants to meet you."

I could have died. I don't remeber if i said anything wheni shook Bj's hand. But, that is one day I will never forget.

I am trying ot hold back the tears. He was, again, very special to me.

Love always, Adam Semon

My family and I will always remember Elrod not only with the Orioles but with Merle. Growing up in the same neighborhood with his wife's family, I can remember the impact that he made on the young and old. Just knowing that his presence was around, was uplifting and encouraging for others to seize opportunities and make something significant happen with their life. We did and we thank Elrod for his invisible influence in the lives of the Owens Family who lived on Ayrdale Ave. We will always remember that he filled a purpose far greater than that of himself.

My favourite sports memory of all time was provided by Ellie Hendricks. About 25 years ago, when I was just a little kid, I saw Mr. Hendricks as coach for the O's at Tiger Stadium. I waited in a line of pushy kids to get his autograph. He gave each kid an autograph. When I sat down in my seat, he yelled, "Hey kid, come here." I went back down and he gave me a ball. I was so excited that I forgot to get him to sign it. I brought the ball back to him a few minutes later and he signed it. That ball is sitting in front of me right now. Mr. Hendricks was a credit to the Major Leagues. Rest in peace.

I was saddened to hear the news of Elrod Hendricks' death last week. I watched many Orioles games on TV when he played catcher as well as when he was working in the bullpen. He had a great attitude and smile all of the time. I think the one play that I best remembered him was in the 1970 World Series when he tagged Bernie Carbo of the Cincinnati Reds at home plate with his glove while the ball was in the other bare hand. The umpire got turned around as the runner tried to score at home plate, but he signaled "out" much to the chagrin of the base runner. That was a memorable World Series. May you rest in peace and be chatting up a storm with Dave McNally in heaven.

Wed July 28th 1998 me and Cindy attended our first Orioles / Tigers game in old Tiger stadium. Elrod worked his way down the right field seats at the end of the game shaking hands and signing autographs. I reached out, shook his hand and had him sign my ticket, which he did with that smile we have all come to love. That autograph has been with me in my wallet everyday since, only coming out to show and tell the story. Ellie you are now playing on the great ball field in the sky....and you are an allstar on that team.

I met Ellie at Mcdonogh school where he would come to visit the drivers and students on the bus parking lot. He was always smiling and introducing himself to those he had not met. I was fortunate to be one that he approached and introduced himself. I looked forward to seeing him as often as I could. He was a fixture at Mcdonogh School. To know him is to respect him and appreciate his love of life and people. He was a very giving person who loved what he did. We were so honored to know him for too short a time. God Bless his family in this trying time. We all are saddened by their loss. We feel the loss knowing that there will never be another Ellie.

I MET ELROD ABOUT 6 YEARS AGO AND I WILL TRULY MISS HIM. HE WAS SUCH A GREAT PERSON. HE ALWAYS MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS IMPORTANT, WHEN WE WOULD SEE EACH OTHER AT SPRING TRAINING. HE ALWAYS REMEMBERED NAMES OF PEOPLE HE MET, AND STORIES THAT THEY HAD SHARED. I SEND MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS TO HIS FAMILY AND TO THE ORIOLES BALL CLUB. EVERYONE WHO KNEW HIM WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT I'M SAYING WHEN I SAY THAT SPRING TRAINING WILL NEVER BE THE SAME WITHOUT HIM. GOOD-BYE ELROD, WE LOVE AND MISS YOU.

Mr. Hendricks,

Just wnted to say Thank You for all the help you gave to our son at baseball camp. He spoke of you fondly. Thank You also for helping his Mom and me keep his memory alive with all the assistance you and your wife gave us with his memorial fund. It won't be the same at the Park without you. The image of you standing in the bullpen in your shin guards instructing the pitchers will live on fondly in my momories. I will see you there everytime I look that way at the Park. RIP, Elrod.

God bless you Ellie and family. As a lifelong Red Sox fan, I remember well the hustle and class that was the trademark Ellie's playing career. In those days the Orioles sure "had our number" and Ellie was one who seemed to always be at his best against our Sox!! Reading through these condlonces from his many friends and fans, I realize that Ellie was not only a fine player but a fine person and role model as well. It was no surprise to many of us that he became such an outstanding coach. Rest well my friend.......a job well done and a life that ended far too early!

Ellie, you were a great and expansive soul. I have had the remarkable experience of associating with many powerful men in my lifetime. I have dined with Moshe Dion, been courted by a crowned prince, had a birthday kiss from Robert Redford, hobnobbed with shipping tycoons, and have travelled the world with millionaires. I have to say that Elrod Hendricks reached far beyond such material power into the hearts of thousands, with his charismatic power of the heart. He possessed a rare gift of true caring and genuine love for his fellow man. We all hold treasured memories of gracious Ellie and his abundant benevolence. He was a 'once in a lifetime' kind of person whom graces our world with the kind of love only the most honest can exemplify - a purity of spirit. Ellie, we all miss you deeply. You touched us with your beauty and talent. Our days were happier because of you. Your sunny Carribbean charm showered us with its brilliance, as it must now shine on the angels in heaven...time to soar. Kim

Mr. Hendricks was a gentleman who will leave a lasting impression on my then 4 yr old son.Back in 1996,I had taken my son to an exibition game with the Braves @ Orioles in Ft. Lauderdale. After the game,we went to get some autographs from the Braves players. No one had the time to sign, so we went to the Orioles side. There was Elrod Hendricks willing to sign. That turned a sour taste into a great feeling for a little boy.Not only did he sign but he took about 10 min. to talk with my son.To this day he remembers what happened. When I told him of Mr.Hendricks passing on,he cried like he lost a member of our family.I know he will be missed by many friends & family, but he will also be missed by that 4 yr old boy and his dad.Good-bye Elrod, thank you for that special memory!!

I have known Ellie since 1963 when I started covering him with the Santurce Crabbers and considered him one of the greatest persons I have ever known, in and out of the game. I was deeply shocked when my sister in law, Chao, who was also a friend of his, told me of his untimely death. He always told me that I should write a book and title it "The Ol' Winter League'' and I had just started writing last week. It will be dedicated to you, Madamo, my dear friend, and I will always remember your eternal smile. God must be smiling to see you show up in the on-deck circle with that big steel reinforcing rod you used to swing before going to bat with the big 40-ounce bat.

I first saw Elrod play at Yankee Stadium in the late 60's . He truly was the 1st prototype defensive catcher in the major leagues. He always had a smile on his face and was a true master of his craft.

A humble and giving man with a heart of gold. You were a great friend that I will miss until my days end. What laughs we had.
