I have very fond memories riding around the grounds of the Outrigger Resort with granddaughters (Franny and Cathy) in a golf cart! I always remember her holding my hair away from my face and telling me I was beautiful. She made me feel very special and I always appreciated her kindness.

For Frances...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I had the privilege of singing to Frances in 1982, when I was a part of the Naval Air Training Command Choir from Pensacola. We were going through navy flight training, and the command choir was asked to visit her at her estate. I will never for get it - we sang "Shenandoah" to her, and she had a wonderful smile as we sang to her.
Seeing her perform with Bob Hope in many films of USO tours made me feel quite nostalgic and thankful that I got to meet her in person.
My sincere condolences to the family of Frances. She brought a bit of home to all service men and women away from home.

My dad (enlisted ground crew) was in the 13th AF, 18th FG, 44th FS in the South Pacific from 1942-1945. He had enough points to come home from the Phillipines in 1945 shortly before the war ended. There is a picture on the web of the entire squadron in 1944 taken in Guadalcanal. He is the person standing in the top row, on the right end. His name was Wilbur W. Heck (SSgt)and he played the guitar. He died in 1999 but often spoke of his war experiences. I, Bill, his son would like to hear from anyone that remembers him.

My belated condolences to Frances'family. My father,Edgar, served in WW 11 having landed on D-Day with the 29th Div,175th Inf. After the battle of St. Lo,he,and what was left of his rifle company were sitting in the rain by the side of a road when a flatbed truck comes by and stops.Out from the cab steps Frances and Dinah Shore! They proceed to hop on the truck bed and sing several songs for the platoon--there were no reporters or cameramen with them.Dad always spoke with reverance of that day, saying "there were just us filthy guys sitting in a ditch, they were probably heading to a USO show, they didn't have to stop just for us!" Dad carried that memory warmly with him until his passing on Feb.6,2007.Bless your memory Frances(and Dinah, too). You were the greatest generation!

Ironically, tonight I randomly pulled out "The Glenn Miller Story" DVD, added to my collection not long after the death of my WW II vet father, as I looked for ways to connect. Entertained by Frances' "Chattanooga Choo Choo," I did a search for her name, discovering that just this past Monday she took her final journey. Thanks for the music.

I'm the author of "4-F Blues, A Novel of WWll Hollywood", and it is dedicated to various people of WW11, whether famous or not. Frances Langford is one of the people to whom I dedicated this book. I sent her a copy and she replied, thanking me (in fact we had a short correspondence of 3 or 4 letters). Due to her eye problems, I don't think she was able to read the book, but perhaps someone read it, or part of it, or at least the dedication, to her. What a great woman, giving selflessly of herself all through the war and beyond. And no doubt before. Loving her deep and beautiful and resonant voice, I often play her wonderful music, "You're Nearer" (1940) being one of my favorites as it is particularly bittersweet.Thinking of Ms.Langford, "bittersweet" is the word that comes to mind. Someone who is now part of memory, but one who still lives because of the beauty of her compassion and kindness. In terms of the way she risked her life so many times to entertain our troops, has she been put up for a citation of bravery or a medal? She deserves as much recognition as that other fabulous guy, Mr. Hope. Best regards to Frances' husband and family.

Frances Langford has always held a special place in my heart since I first saw her in "The Glenn Miller Story" way back in the fifties. As webmaster for the 13th Jungle Air Force website I was especially pleased to find out there was a connection between Miss Langford and the 13th AAF. She was friends with Robert Westbrook, a pilot in the 44th FS. When she visited the South Pacific he took her for a ride in his P-38 and named his plane "Florida Thrush" after her. When I finally bought my old Jeep a couple of years ago and started to refurb it along WWII lines, I named it "Frances" in her honor and keep a picture of her on the inside of the windshield frame. She was a special lady.

Our deepest sympathy to
Harold Stuart and to the
family and friends of
Florence Langford.
We had the job of briefly
meeting Harold and Frances
at the performance of the
St. Lucie River Initiative
at the Lyric Theatre a few
years ago.
We were sitting in front of
them and we turned around
during intermission to thank
them for their many and
generous contributions to our
community of Stuart.
They were so gracious and so
nice. Our conversation with
them was the highlight of
the evening. We also enjoyed
a few laughs together.
While it is sad that she has
died, we must thank God for
having had her live and for
having her touch so many
people with her kindness.
She certainly touched our
hearts that night and her
shining star will live on
forever.
God Bless you always.
Sincerely,

I never met Frances Langford, although I did talk with her on the telephone once. Yet I knew much about her because the third gypsy in Bob Hope’s original USO tours was Tony Romano. It was the guitar of Tony Romano that accompanied Hope, Jerry Colonna, and Langford, the guitar that backed Frances when she sang, “I’m in the Mood for Love,” in person and on record. The contribution of the four gypsies to the morale of U.S. military personnel throughout several wars cannot be overstated. Truly, they all were war heroes. Sadly, Tony Romano died only a few months ago (March 4, 2005). Hope received the vast majority of recognition for entertaining the troops, but let us not forgot the importance of Colonna, Langford, and Romano, gifted entertainers in their own right. To honor Romano, who played a long-term engagement at the Outrigger before moving to California, I established a website to remember the quintessential rhythm guitarist and a superb singer

My father was a Navy Hospital Corpsman during the war. My mother's brother and cousin served in the conflict, and the cousin was killed-in-action at Pearl Harbor, aboard the USS ARIZONA, in 1941. When dad died in September 1994, my mother stoically acted almost as if the event were just another day. But when, in 2000, mom phoned me after watching an American Movie Classics rerun of Frances Langford in "The Glenn Miller Story," she was beside herself with grief. "Did you see "The Glenn Miller Story" tonight?" she asked. "For my generation, Frances Langford was the voice of World War II! Your dad and I listened to her again and again before he shipped-out for overseas...." Younger generations won't understand this, but Frances' death comes as a white-hot blow to those who know her impact on our popular culture. One can only imagine the "Command Performance" that'll take place on the resurrection day.

I'm only 36 but I was always impressed when I watched the old newsreels or the Bob Hope specials. When Frances came on the screen, there was such beauty, grace, presence and talent! Then, my second mom introduced me to her music and I was hooked. A few years ago, I wrote to Ms. Langford and requested an autographed pic. She mailed one back to me fairly quickly. Then, I found a piece of sheet music that I really loved that had her picture on it. I mailed it to her and requested an autograph..again, very gracious and mailed it back signed right away.
We've lost so many from her generation, people who understood loss and sacrifice. The only one that I can think of in the great group of performers of her time that is left is Dame Vera Lynn.
Can you imagine how glorious of a reunion they are having for her in Heaven? Rest in peace, Frances. You'll be sorely missed here.

I lived in Jensen Beach in 1981 and 1982 ... always enjoyed walking over to The Outrigger and looking at the "stainless steel" yacht that was there at the time. Never got to meet Frances Langford, but I did get to hear a few stories from the then Captain of the yacht. Liked you in Yankee Doodle Dandy ... sorry I never got to say Hi to you.

I am sorry to hear about Frances Langford. We lived in Stuart when I was younger, and my parents would always drive by the Outrigger to look at her Yacht. It was a fabulous site to see, especially back then.(70's) There is a promenade here in Lakeland that was built by her.

Frances Langford lifted the hearts and souls of every serviceman and woman during a very critical time in our history. We used to listen to her fabled voice with eyes closed pretending she was very near and singing only to us. Thank you Frances, for being such a selfless and happy spirit. We all will forever miss your enchanting voice.

I remember her singing on Bob Hope's show, but never seen any of her movies that I remember. I am sad to hear of her passing. All of the oldies are leaving us.
