Frank Gorshin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 18, 2005.
BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - Actor Frank Gorshin, the impressionist with 100 faces best known for his Emmy-nominated role as The Riddler on the old "Batman" television series, has died. He was 72.

Gorshin's wife of 48 years, Christina, was at his side when he died Tuesday at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, his agent and longtime friend, Fred Wostbrock, said Wednesday.

"He put up a valiant fight with lung cancer, emphysema and pneumonia," Mrs. Gorshin said in a statement.

Despite dozens of television and movie credits, Gorshin will be forever remembered for his role as The Riddler, Adam West's villainous foil in the question mark-pocked green suit and bowler hat on "Batman" from 1966-69.

"It really was a catalyst for me," Gorshin recalled in a 2002 Associated Press interview. "I was nobody. I had done some guest shots here and there. But after I did that, I became a headliner in Vegas, so I can't put it down."

West said the death of his longtime friend was a big loss.

"Frank will be missed," West said in a statement. "He was a friend and fascinating character."

Gorshin earned another Emmy nominations one for a guest shot on "Star Trek."

In 2002, Gorshin portrayed George Burns on Broadway in the one-man show "Say Goodnight Gracie." He used only a little makeup and no prosthetics.

"I don't know how to explain it. It just comes," he said. "I wish I could say, 'This is step A, B and C.' But I can't do that. I do it, you know. The ironic thing is I've done impressions all my life - I never did George Burns."

Gorshin's final performance will be broadcast on Thursday's CBS-TV series "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."

It was a chance meeting in 1986 in the lobby of the Hilton Hotel, Beaumont, TX. A memory that has lasted a lifetime. We were waiting for a friend to join us and go into the disco. Frank was there doing a road show with Imogene Coca and staying at the hotel.

When he walked over to us I said, do you know who you look like and he said, Frank Gorshin? I said, are you? He said yes and we all laughed. He asked if he could join us. We had a fun night dancing, talking, laughing and being entertained. He would do impressions for us on demand. What a nice, talented, fun and gracious person he was. He was a true gentleman and as classy as they come.

Thanks for the memories! You are missed. God bless you!

Frank Gorshin was a fine impressionist and character actor. I knew him primarily as the Riddler on the original Batman TV series which I grew up watching in the 1980s and 1990s. He is my favorite archvillain from that series and I shall always remember him fondly. He was a very gifted man and was blessed with great, tremendous talent. Until we meet in the Kingdom of Heaven, sir.

Please find solace from God,s word recorded at Jer 37:13,14 that says "And you will have to know that I am Jehovah when I open your graves and when I raise you up out of your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit in you and you will come to life, and I will settle you.

This message is for Brandon Gorshin.
Your grandfather was a wonderful human being. My wife and I met him in 1979 at the Biltmore Hotel in San Francisco where we visited on our honeymoon. We took pictures with him, and he even mentioned us in his performance that evening. Several years ago, we saw him in , "Say Goodnight Gracie" on Broadway. Thanks to his director, Judy Resnick, we again met him and took some pictures. A week later my hometown newspaper, Staten Island Advance, ran a full page story of how we met Frank both on our honeymoon, and at the play. Frank was delighted and we even planned to have dinner with him at a restaurant in Staten Island. Unfortunately, he passed away and we were devestated when we got the bad news. He will remain in our hearts forever.

For Frank...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Frank went to High School with my cousin Joanne. When I interviewed him on the radio and said," you asked her out and she turned you down." He laughed, " I got a lot of that." One of the easiest/best interviews I ever did, because of Frank's nature and style. Nice man.

In the early 80's while I was working on a magazine article about Rev. Mother Dolores Hart (a former actress, now a Benedictine nun), I contacted Frank Gorshin to ask him about his memories of working with Dolores Hart. They made 2 films together: "Where the Boys Are" and "Sail a Crooked Ship." He was very gracious in the interview and had only complimentary things to say about working with her, recalling that even back in the early 60's (when Mother Dolores was in her early 20's), she seemed, in his words "almost angelic." I will always be grateful for his cooperation in contributing his personal experiences to my article.

I'm deeply saddened by Frank's passing. I'm a very lucky person that has the ability to remember the small details which made Frank come across as a superb finely tuned, larger than life entertainer. His impersonations will always stay with me. I named my son Frank. Actualy, Franklin. Frank is a feisty little rascal. He looks, sounds and acts just like the Riddler. Infact, at my son's school the teachers are convinced my son is the reincarnation of the Riddler. Green is his favorite color, as is mine! The Riddler is my favorite character in all the Batman shows. Is it true that bats carry rabies?

Mr. Gorshin you will be greatly missed. When i heard the news of your passing it brought a few tears to my eyes because i felt like part of my childhood had been torn away. I remember in the late 60's my mom having to craft together a Riddler costume because you couldn't buy the Riddler costume in the Kresge's or Woolworth's.Later in life I saw your impressions and remember being astounded at how well you did Kirk Douglas. I never saw your acts in Las Vegas and I now I regret that, but I'll always remember that hysterical laugh of the the Riddler! God bless you and family, you are truely missed.

I was so sadden to hear of the passing of Frank Gorshin. I worked in the Orchestra in the Lake Tahoe area for years and worked Mr. Gorshin many times. He was the most classy of entertainers ever. Mr. Gorshin was without a doubt the best impressionist, comedian we ever worked. I have a fond memory of Mr. Gorshin after a week engagement in Lake Tahoe. Mr. Gorshin asked each member of the Orchestra to go into his dressing room and he personally gave us a bottle of Mums as a thank you to us. It's sad to me that not alot of mention about Mr.Gorshin being the Best Impersonator was broadcast in the news. He was a Very Classy Man! Best to his family. I'm glad that I was so lucky to meet and work for him. We will miss him.

My mom, Mary Trease Byrne, grew up in Garfield with Frank and his brother Herman. She told me, in school there were two kids who said they were going to grow up and become big stars. She said the class never paid any attention to the one kid, but Frank, they all believed. It sure made me as a boy, watch Batman on a different angle. GOOD GO FRANK!

The Gorshin family lived around the corner from me on Kincaid Park. My dad used to whistle when he would be walking down Mathilda St. on his way home from work and one day Frank was coming down the street whisteling and I ran and jumped up on him and gave him a kiss(I was only about 5 years old at the time) and said "you're not my daddy" I started to cry because I was scared that he wasn't my dad(of course I thought it was my dad's whistle and I had my head down and wasn't looking at who I was running to) and he came to our house and told my mother that he didn't do anything to me. My girlfriend used to live across the street from his family home in the big white house on Kincaid Park and we'd watch Frank practicing singing and doing impersonations when the windows were open in the summertime. I remember him as a neighborhood boy but I enjoyed him as a "star" too. Every time I'd watch him on TV, I'd tell whoever was in the room the above stories. He was a great entertainer. My sincere sympathy to his family.

Mr. Gorshin was a very gracious man. I had the opportunity to meet him during his performance as George Burns. We spoke about an earlier appearance at the Playboy Club, Great Gorge, decades ago and he recalled the liquor store the bottom of the hill, owned by my late father-in-law.Mr. Gorshin was, in my opinion, one of those stars who, I believe, did not forget that the goal was to be a star and courteous to fans,a style that many of those who "have made it" seem to forget. Thanks to the video re-plays, he will go on providing entertainment for others.

I had the priviledge of being Mr.Gorshins chaffuer several times while working at Harrahs Atlantic City in the late 80's. On one particular trip coming back from his home to Harrah's he asked if I had seen his show. I told him I wouldn't be able to because my parents were coming for the weekend to visit to celebrate my fathers birthday. He asked if I had made any plans. I told him no and he asked if he thought they would like to see his show. I was thrilled, my dad so enjoyed his acting and impersonations. We went and what a surprise, his wished my dad Happy Birthday and gave us front row, center seats. It's a day we will never forget. It was such a pleasure to be in your company Frank, I speak of you often to family and friends when I recall my days in Atlantic City. You were a kind and wonderful man. I first learned of Mr. Gorshin by watching shows such as The Mike Douglas Show and Hollywood Palace and Merv. He was the first person I ever saw who could become someone else.

Taking nothing from Rich Little but Mr. Gorshin IS the BEST impressionist in the world!!!

The next I knew he was on Batman and I was just amazed that he could act(I was young). Then if that wasn't enough he was on one of the Greatest episodes of Srat Trek ever.

A talent like Mr. Gorshin's comes along rarely and it comes no more.

He will be missed for many reasons by the public but only a few will miss Dad and Husband.

When Mr. Goshin was starring in the play "The Apartment" at the Claridge in Atlantic City, I took my son who was then 11 years old. We had front stage seats. Mr. Gorshin turned around he spoke his dialog directly at my son. As soon as he did, my son said out loud "It's The Riddler". The audience laughed and so did Mr. Gorshin. My son, now 33 and father of 5 has never forgotten Mr. Gorshin's gratiousness.

Dear Gorshin Family:

Talented people are sorely missed when they leave our lives because they will no longer be around to make us laugh or think or just impress us with their God-given talents.

Frank, pardon me for the familiar use of his given name, was a briliant impressionist and I remember him and Rich Little and George Kirby on an old television show called the KOPY KATS. There everyone could demonstrate their manifold talents and it was alternatingly funny and poignant. I always studied Frank's impressions and after some effort I could do a real sharp imitation of John Wayne. I even had a Great Western Bank Manager whip everybody into shape for the visit of the Duke to open an account at his branch. Because I did not want to voluntarily suffer enforced poverty of an entertainment life style I did not pursue matters any further.

It was always a joy to watch Frank at work and he will sorely be missed. I don't see a big market in doing Justin Timberlake impressions for future artists.

Frank, no time is a good time to leave, but I think your timing was impeccable.

I have many wonderful memories of watching Batman on Tv with my mom. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a convention. He was such a wonderfully kind man. Thank you for the wonderful childhood memories.

He was a talented man. Every role he played he played well. I loved him as George Burns. My thoughts and prayers to his family in thier time of sorrow.

When I was in college, I asked a my sound engineer / professor (who worked with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Chuck Berry, etc...) who was the best entertainer he ever worked with; his answer - Frank Gorshin. Mr. Gorshin never talked down to him and his staff and treated everyone with respect. Hard to find celebraties or even non-celebraties like that. Rest in Peace Mr. Gorshin.
