Gordon Scott Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 3, 2007.
BALTIMORE (AP) – Gordon Scott, a handsome, muscle-bound actor who portrayed Tarzan in the 1950s, has died. He was 80.

Scott, who had been living in a working class section of south Baltimore, died Monday at Johns Hopkins Hospital of post-heart surgery complications, a hospital spokesman said.

Scott made 24 movies including "Tarzan and the Lost Safari" (1957), "Tarzan's Fight for Life" (1958), "Tarzan and the Trappers" (1958), "Tarzan's Greatest Adventure" (1959) and "Tarzan the Magnificent" (1960).

The cast in the 1959 movie included Sean Connery and Anthony Quayle.

Tarzan, the vine-swinging hero of the jungle, was created by the author Edgar Rice Burroughs. Scott was among a long line of actors, including Johnny Weissmuller and Larry "Buster" Crabbe, who portrayed him.

"He was an absolutely wonderful Tarzan who played the character as an intelligent and nice man who carried himself well, much as my grandfather had originally written it," Danton Burroughs told The (Baltimore) Sun.

Scott was a lifeguard at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas when he was discovered by Hollywood producer Sol Lesser, said Scott's brother Rayfield Werschkull of Portland, Ore.

He was signed to a seven-year-contract after he outperformed 200 other international candidates.

During the 1954 production of his first film, "Tarzan's Hidden Jungle," he fell in love with co-star Vera Miles. The couple married that year and divorced four years later.

After the Tarzan movies, Scott appeared in Westerns and gladiator films.

Scott's later years were spent in Baltimore, in a row house owned by Roger and Betty Thomas.

"My husband has been a fan of his since he was a child. When we were in Hollywood about eight years ago, we looked him up," said Betty Thomas. "We invited him for a visit. He came and never left."

Thomas said she last saw Scott in the hospital on Saturday. She told him, "'Gordon, we love you, and so does the dog and the bird.' He opened one eye for a moment and gave me a wink."

Although some sources said Scott was born in August 1927, his brother told The Sun he was born a year later.

I grew up watching you in the movies, those were wonderful days and you gave me great memories. Loved your Tarzan and thoroughly enjoyed you and Steve Reeves together in Duel of the Titans. Now that I am older and waxing nostalgic I have bought most of them on DVD to enjoy again. Rest in Peace and know that you are still remembered.

I cried when I heard of your passing. I was old enough to look to look at you and dream of meeting you. The Tarzan who though before he spoke and with gorgeous eyes that could make any women melt. I've lost almost all my idols and I think of you along with Burt Lancaster and Gene Kelly. Now I have my dreams and copies of all your movies. Don't think I'll ever forget you. Love Donna

It's hard to find words...Gordon Scott was a lot more than just quality screen entertainment for me...He was my ultimate hero, my lifelong idol and inspiration...I was raised with his sensational Tarzan and sword-and-sandal epics musclebound-hero exploits, always hoping I would end up beating heavy odds the way he did in his movies....I believe I've been, and always will be, one of the greatest fans he ever had....I think he was the most versatile of all iron-pumping actors who carved a career on screen, having also left a strong mark on genres other than the Tarzan and mythology epics , playing Western heroes,Zorro,Caesar, a spy ,even a Venetian nobleman....I have seen each and every one of his movies at least four times over...And I'll keep watching them...He has influenced my life as much as a few other real or fictitious figures have and I'll never forgive myself for not managing to meet him in real...My magnificent hero, my all-time-idol, my life has never been the same after I first saw you on screen neither will it be the same again now that you have died... But I know we'll meet one day in a better, pain-and-spite-free world and then we'll have so much to talk about.....I will always love you...

Always Remembered!

You are mosted remembered, as I recently saw one of your Tarzan movies. I fell in love with you as a little girl and never forgot that gorgeous that body and how handsome you were. At 54, I still remember, so whenever the opportunity to see you starring in a movie, I watch, shaking my head about your good looks.

I was so devastated by your passing when I saw a brief announcement on TCM's stars who made their transitions during the year. I have been googling information about you ever since.

My favorite movie is "Duel of the Titan" with Steve Reeves.

Thanks Gordon for those dreamy years! Your remain alive in my heart and memories.

Love,

For Gordon...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I started reading these entries by various contributors and found that every one of them said something that I wanted to say. So, I'll just endorse all those sentiments.
I first met Gordon in an old movie theatre: I was a child in a canvas seat and he was on the big screen, larger than life in every sense of that expression. Any fool could tell that he was a genuinely good and humble man; that's something no-one can act.
For me, no other player has come close to his portrayal of the Ape Man. I just wish he could have made many more Tarzan films because Gordon gave Tarzan a nobility that others couldn't match.
Gordon (not Tarzan) became one of my role models.
Vale, Gordon Scott.
Thanks for the memories.

I first encountered Gordon Scott as a 12 year old child, as I watched, fasinated, as he swung through the sound-stage jungle of "Tarzan and the Lost Safari" and my life was never the same again. Fifty-one years later and his films still remind me of how Great a jungle lord he was! Rest in Peace, Gordon!

Gordon, as he played Tarzan, represented to me all that was vigorous, handsome, vital, strong, fair, and spirited in a man. I married someone who had those qualities and have never been sorry. Thank you Gordon, for your portrayal which spoke to a young girl so well. I miss you.

Lucky to have met Gordon years ago during a convention. Exchanged stories of films and experiences while having lunch and drinks. Remember well the Sword & Sandal epics (and Steve Reeves) stories on many visits. MOST friendly and accessable signing my son's photo and MANY lobby cards for us. Just a genuine friendly 'hero' and individual from my childhood days of the 50's. Sorry, to have missed you in Cottonwood, AZ. over the past few years. No doubt sharing stories with Reeves, Weismuller, Clayton Moore and the other heroes of past generations. Miss you my friend and long overdue tribute to your talents and friendship.

My belated but nonetheless deepest sympathy to Gordon's family. Please know that Gordon was much loved in Australia. He was a real hero of mine as a young boy growing up in a small Australian country town of 1300 people. He was and always will be the greatest Tarzan. R.I.P. Gordon!

I am saddened at Gordon Scott's passing. Of all the screen Tarzans, he was the best. Tarzan's Greatest Adventure was exactly that, and he was "Tarzan the magnificent. He brought to life the Tarzan of which Burroughs wrote.

I had only recently learned of Gordon Scott's passing and I was suddenly very sad. I thought he was the best looking of all the screen Tarzans, as well as a really good actor. Tarzan's Greatest Adventure I feel is one of the best "films" ever made! I thought he also did a terrific acting job as Remus in Duel of The Titans, my favorite of all his Italian sword and sandal epics.
His legacy will live on forever in all the films he made. I've missed
his presence on the big screen since the late 60's when he stopped
being an actor. Goodbye mr. Scott. Thank you for all the wonderful
memories!

Dear Gordon,

Thank you for allowing me the privilege and honor of getting to know you in your last few months. Though our friendship was new, the time spent with you will forever be one of my greatest memories. As doors began opening for you at every turn, I hope you were able to see that you had never been, nor ever would be forgotten. I hope we made a difference.

Your passing was all too soon, but I look forward to see you as you were, fit and strong, in the age to come.

Blessings, my friend. Rest well.

As a small boy who just arrived in the U.S. in the 50's my first memory was seeing a Tarzan movie with Gordon scott-then seeing him on the cover of the old Dell comics- motivated me to learn english as fast as I could. I did learn to read english from the Tarzan dells and to me he was Tarzan---He became my boyhood idle whom I finally meet in Tarzana in 1989. I told him my story about him being the reason and motivation to learn english and I remember him laughing and being very amused but yet moved. Thank you Gordon Scott for all the memories and for being so kind to me when I finally got to meet you---truley a fine man and Tarzan the magnificent!!!!!!

Gordon, what fun we had shooting "Hercules and the Princess of Troy," in Rome and Palinuro back in 1964! You were a generous, happy, fun-loving "Herk"! My wife Maria and I still have the marble coasters you gave us when we had dinner at your Rome apartment, and we ordered Fetuccini Alfredo take-out from the original Alfredo's right across the street ! And those hectic days filming on the Adriatic off Yugoslavia! What fun we had!
We'll not forget you, old friend, you're a part of our lives... I'm only sad that we didn't know you were in Baltimore, so near us ! We'd have loved to visit and remember our younger days. We'll be with you when you're laid to rest, and will feel privileged to be there! God Bless You!

Gordon Scott impressed me as a ten year old watching Tarzan and the Lost Safari. Just imagine the Cinemascope close-up of Gordon as Tarzan! He must have had a 60 inch chest with a wing span that looked superhuman on that big screen. Hope Warner or whoever owns the rights to this film gets it out on DVD soon. A family friendly film and fun to watch especially with Gordon as the star. All of his other Tarzan films were anticipated and Tarzan the Magnificent is not to be missed. Will miss you Gordon.

I have fond memories of living with my uncle, Gordon Scott. He stayed with my family for a few months in Seaside Oregon, worked as a lifeguard, then went on to Vegas to be discovered. I was his first official member, in the "Great Scott" fan club. He sent me his first PR photo, a membership card and pictures of him on the set of his first movie. I was 8 yrs. old. I was the daughter of his oldest brother Jerome "Bo" Werschkul and I am named after his father, my grandfather, Stanley Werschkul. I remember him as a happy, funloving young man. I wanted to grow up and marry him. Although I have not had contact with him in many years, I am saddened by his death and pray he has found peace and love up yonder. My thanks to all of you who have sent condolences to his family and friends.

w/ sympathy to Gordon's family and God bless you Thomas family for the friendship and kindness you gave Gordon.

He was always my favorite Tarzan and as a boy in the 1950's I had the pleasure of watching his movies first on the big movie screen.
I loved Tarzan's Greatest Adventure and The Magnificent -- I just today (May 6th) learned of Gordon's death - yesterday (May 5th)I was cleaning out some old VHS tapes of misc. things from TV and the truth is I happened to see on one of the labels "TGA" -- I popped it into the VCR and was thrilled to see that great movie again -- my very thoughts were what a great, excellent actor he was and played so strongly w/ A Quale and Sean C.

I so regret I never got to meet him or at least send him a letter to thank him.

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
