Hamilton Jordan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 21, 2008.
ATLANTA (AP) - Hamilton Jordan, a political strategist from south Georgia who helped propel Jimmy Carter to the White House and served as his chief of staff, died after a long battle with cancer.

Jordan, 63, died at his home in Atlanta about 7:30 p.m., said Gerald Rafshoon, who was Carter's chief of communications.

"He was a great strategist. He just couldn't strategize his way out of this," Rafshoon said from his home in Washington.

Jordan's battle with cancer began 22 years ago, when he was diagnosed with lymphoma, followed by bouts with melanoma and prostate cancer.

Rafshoon said a memorial service was planned Friday at The Carter Center in Atlanta and Carter would attend.

Carter said in a statement that he and his wife, Rosalynn, "are deeply saddened."

"Hamilton was my closest political adviser, a trusted confidant and my friend. His judgment, insight and wisdom were excelled only by his compassion and love of our country."

Jordan was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1944 and raised in Albany, Georgia. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a political science degree in 1967.

Rafshoon said Jordan was a key figure in Carter's 1976 presidential campaign because he conceived a strategy to have Carter campaign in every state - even years in advance - and targeted early voting states.

"Iowa had gotten into the headlines in the 1972 campaign but Hamilton spotted the fact if you win Iowa, you could win New Hampshire and a truly unknown candidate had to have a national strategy," Rafshoon said.

During Carter's administration, Jordan participated in the Camp David Egyptian-Israeli peace talks and "worked tirelessly" during the Iranian hostage crisis, Rafshoon said.

Jordan viewed Carter as "the right man for the times, after Watergate, Vietnam. He saw somebody not from Washington, not in Congress, not tarred from the sins of the past and understood American people better than anybody in that campaign," Rafshoon said.

After Carter was defeated by Ronald Reagan in 1980, Jordan ran in Georgia in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in 1986. He lost to Wyche Fowler, who won the general election.

Jordan worked for H. Ross Perot's presidential bid in 1992.

Later he worked with Unity08, an independent political group founded by independent Angus King, the former governor of Maine, along with Rafshoon and Doug Bailey, a former staffer on President Gerald Ford's 1976 campaign.

Jordan told the Atlanta Press Club in March that he was a fan of Barack Obama in his race for the Democratic nomination. Jordan visited the club to discuss his fight with cancer.

"I've been to the edge of life and had to face my own mortality," he said. "I'm here to tell you, I'm not through yet. We've been blessed with great medicine and great friends."

Rafshoon said Jordan had fought his bouts with cancer successfully but recently "had a series of things that shut down his systems." He said Jordan's doctor would describe the medical complications on Wednesday.

"I talked to him many times during the past few weeks," he said. "He was enjoying watching the latest presidential campaign."

Mrs. Jordan, I am so sorry to learn of Hamilton's passing. He does not know me, nor do you, but I truly beleive that his book saved my life. I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer a year ago and was devastated with the news. His book though allowed me to deal with it and kept me positive. As a former Atlantan, he has always been inspirational to me. I am passing his book on to others having to deal with cancer of some degree.

I met Mr. Jordan during Jimmy Carter's Presidency - I was married to Willie Nelson, Country singer at the time. My two daughter's, Paula and Amy and Willie and I, had the pleasure of spending two nights at the White House during that time. Strange, but mostly I remember Mr. Jordan as being so charismatic and with a great sense of humor. I know the importance of his job now and I certainly knew it then, but his smile and sense of humor is what I will always remember about it. God Rest his soul!!!

Dorothy and children - My almost 20 years at camp have held so many memories of Hamilton, all associated with laughter, love and time he took to do all the things he did for the kids. One of the most profound, and hilarious memories, is when he dressed up like "M.C. Hammer" (except he was M.C. Hamilton) and danced to "Can't Touch This" back and forth across the stage. I laughed until I cried. There are so many memories. You all have lost one of the most wonderful human beings I have had the honor to have known. I know you will cherish your good luck in being the biggest part of this kind man's life. I know he loved you all more than words could speak. My heart, prayers and love are with you all.

A great man. I had the privilege of meeting the Jordan family a number of times, and I think that with all of Hamilton's tremendous accolades, his biggest success might be the tremendous and caring family that he helped raise.

I first met Mr. Jordan at pulmonary rehabilitation at Windy Hill hospital a few months ago. I was excited and impressed to meet someone who had actually "had breakfast with the leader of the free world" at such a young age!!! I had a few conversations with him in which he was disarmingly humble, not interested in talking at all about his experiences, but rather in how I might be doing. He did tell me he had a daughter named Kathleen (my name) and that may have created a small bond as he remembered me the several other times he came into rehab. In my few conversations with him I was very impressed with his low-key, humble approach, and his concern not about himself but about how others are doing. In my short time of knowing him, he taught me yet another valuable lesson - disease is a great leveler. Doesn't matter who you are/were .... ultimately we're all the same. He told me the last day I saw him that I "inspired (him)" as I was using the treadmill after three years of attendance ..... again, his humility and attention to others impressed me.
I will be selfishly disappointed to not have an opportunity to know this man. But I feel honored to have made his acquaintence. God bless your family. What a lovely man.

I was a young college student in New York when Hamilton Jordan was Carter's Chief of Staff. I had the biggest crush on this charming, upstart Southern boy. My Dad, not a fan of the Carter Administration, used to tease my by writing jokes about Hamilton Jordan on the outside of letters he sent me at school. I would retort by writing things about Jordan's accomplishments on the outside of my letters to him. My friends thought my Dad and I were weird!!

I moved to Atlanta in 1985 and was thrilled that I now had the potential to meet him, especially since I attended many Democratic Party events in those early years. I followed his career locally and always admired his courage. Alas, I have never run into him in all my years in Atlanta, but I still maintained my college girl crush on him. My very sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Hamilton Jordan and the Carter Administration's contribution to this country, and the world, is already appreciated by many. With the passage of time, people are going to recognize just how great a contribution he made. Few persons in the public-eye commanded the respect and trust that Jordan did. Few persons in Washington, then or now, has demonstrated such great integrity in dealing with the affairs of our nation.

Hamilton Jordan saved my husbands life.

In 2002 I was the Phone Canvass Director for Becky Lourey during her first run for Governor of MN. The Pillsbury's had a fundraiser for her in the cities and Hamilton Jordan was the guest of honor.

So a group of us from Duluth, MN were invited to attend and meet him. He was an eloquent speaker and gave us each a free signed copy of his most recent book - No Such Thing as a Bad Day.

I brought the book home and read it immediately and gave it to my husband Dave to read (which he didn't - typical male). In the book he talks about his three types of cancer - one of them being prostate cancer and how when he was researching this book he came across a picture of himself standing in front of a drum of agent orange and until that time he had not made the connection between his cancers and Vietnam/Agent Orange.

He recommended that all Vietnam Vets get their PSA checked. I insisted that Dave get his checked right away and we soon discovered he had an aggressive form of prostate cancer. He had surgery, radiation and hormone treatment and for the past 5 years he had been cancer free - in January we learned it is back so we are
researching possible courses of action at this stage.

I wrote Hamilton a thank you letter in 2002 attributing my meeting him and reading his book as saving my husbands life. As humble as he was he insisted that our taking action is what saved Dave's life.

I continued to correspond with him over the past 5 years.

Words could never express our gratitude to the Jordan family for their dedication to the Camp Sunshine children and families. We truly don’t know how we could have gotten through our journey without the help of Camp Sunshine. You guys have been able to bring a piece of heaven on earth to many lives that wear the fishhook bracelets. You have given the children a place to belong, to be normal, make lasting and deep connections, and time to forget about cancer. I am certain that the words, “Well done my good and faithful servant, well done”, were said by God today. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Good night, sweet prince. Your passing is only tolerable with the thought that your suffering is over. A very great southern gentleman, a political genius, a great humanitarian who never failed to give of himself to help others. I think of the story and photos of him in the AJC a short time ago, with his oxygen tank and his pungent and totally on-target political comments. His death is an incalculable loss to his family, our state, our country, and the world.

I had the honor of working on the staff of President Carter's 1980 campaign, although not closely with Hamilton Jordan. I was always impressed, however, that nothing ever had to be explained twice to him. His unwillingness to sell out to the Beltway clique in Washington was far more genuine, and pioneering, than the affected disdain of later generations of "conservatives" for Washington.

I had the distinctive honor of working with Hamilton when we were both at Whittle Communications in Knoxville, TN back in the early 1990's. He was the consummate colleague and gentleman, always willing to lend a hand inside or outside of the office. People in his old Knoxville neighborhood have always said he was an equally generous neighbor and friend, and will be remembered by neighborhood children for throwing the best Halloween celebrations on Sherwood Drive. After all the accolades that are sure to flood these pages from around the world, isn't the fact that he took the time to have fun with his children and their friends one of the most enduring and admirable of all? Heartfelt condolences to Hamilton's family and all who knew and loved him, with the sincere wish that your sorrow will fade quickly and your memories of him will soon make you smile like those children on Halloween.

Shortly after I was diagnosed with lympthoma in 2000, by sheer chance I came across a copy of "No Such Thing as a Bad Day" and it inspired me and gave me hope. No Such Thing as a Bad Day became my mantra as I struggled through the many indignities of cancer treatment. I say I happened on the book by chance, but truly it was God who used Hamiltons story to provide hope and show me how to look beyond my current circumstances. I was fortunate to meet Hamilton a few years later and get him to sign a copy for me. One of the greatest things that can be said of a man is that he is genuine, and Hamilton Jordan was that. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
