Jack LaLanne Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 23, 2011.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jack LaLanne, the fitness guru who inspired television viewers to trim down, eat well and pump iron for decades before diet and exercise became a national obsession, died Sunday. He was 96.

LaLanne died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay on California's central coast, his longtime agent Rick Hersh said.

Lalanne ate healthy and exercised every day of his life up until the end, Hersh said.

"I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon, but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for," Elaine LaLanne, Lalanne's wife of 51 years and a frequent partner in his television appearances, said in a written statement.

Just before he had heart valve surgery in 2009 at age 95, Jack Lalanne told his family that dying would wreck his image, his publicist Ariel Hankin said at the time.

LaLanne (pronounced lah-LAYN') credited a sudden interest in fitness with transforming his life as a teen, and he worked tirelessly over the next eight decades to transform others' lives, too.

"The only way you can hurt the body is not use it," LaLanne said. "Inactivity is the killer and, remember, it's never too late."

His workout show was a television staple from the 1950s to the '70s. LaLanne and his dog Happy encouraged kids to wake their mothers and drag them in front of the television set. He developed exercises that used no special equipment, just a chair and a towel.

He also founded a chain of fitness studios that bore his name and in recent years touted the value of raw fruit and vegetables as he helped market a machine called Jack LaLanne's Power Juicer.

When he turned 43 in 1957, he performed more than 1,000 push-ups in 23 minutes on the "You Asked For It" television show. At 60, he swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco — handcuffed, shackled and towing a boat. Ten years later, he performed a similar feat in Long Beach harbor.

He maintained a youthful physique and joked in 2006 that "I can't afford to die. It would wreck my image."

"I never think of my age, never," LaLanne said in 1990. "I could be 20 or 100. I never think about it, I'm just me. Look at Bob Hope, George Burns. They're more productive than they've ever been in their whole lives right now."

Fellow bodybuilder and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger credited LaLanne with taking exercise out of the gymnasium and into living rooms.

"He laid the groundwork for others to have exercise programs, and now it has bloomed from that black and white program into a very colorful enterprise," Schwarzenegger said in 1990.

In 1936 in his native Oakland, LaLanne opened a health studio that included weight-training for women and athletes. Those were revolutionary notions at the time, because of the theory that weight training made an athlete slow and "muscle bound" and made a woman look masculine.

"You have to understand that it was absolutely forbidden in those days for athletes to use weights," he once said. "It just wasn't done. We had athletes who used to sneak into the studio to work out.

"It was the same with women. Back then, women weren't supposed to use weights. I guess I was a pioneer," LaLanne said.

The son of poor French immigrants, he was born in 1914 and grew up to become a sugar addict, he said.

The turning point occurred one night when he heard a lecture by pioneering nutritionist Paul Bragg, who advocated the benefits of brown rice, whole wheat and a vegetarian diet.

"He got me so enthused," LaLanne said. "After the lecture I went to his dressing room and spent an hour and a half with him. He said, 'Jack, you're a walking garbage can.'"

Soon after, LaLanne constructed a makeshift gym in his back yard. "I had all these firemen and police working out there and I kind of used them as guinea pigs," he said.

He said his own daily routine usually consisted of two hours of weightlifting and an hour in the swimming pool.

"It's a lifestyle, it's something you do the rest of your life," LaLanne said. "How long are you going to keep breathing? How long do you keep eating? You just do it."

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dan and Jon, and a daughter, Yvonne.

Mr. Jack: I watched you back in the 70's. My family would ask what are you doing when I started doing the yoga exercises. I like to tell my young students, I did yoga before it was popular.

He was my Hero. As long as we are exercising watching his show, usually just Mom and I. At times my other sister would join in. My older brothers usually were sleeping in after a late evening of partying. Sumner we exercised with him M-S. Mom orders us our Glamour Stretchers 2 for one. Also ordered us his Protein Powder and Vitamins. Mom loved him and so did it. To this day at the age of 70 I cam still do 3 sets of 60 push ups. After a rest I can do 40 more if I can get motivated, which isn't often, since I have already usually completed 3 - 4 classes at Golds Gym, Valencia I loved Jack LaLane for bringing and turning our living rooms into gyms. Jane Fonda is another one of my Heros. Margo

I worked for Jack's Health Club Corporation from 1977-1979. The clubs were located in Ft.Lee, New Jersey, Fairfield, New Jersey and Nanuet, New York. His nutrition and exercise programs were superb. I learned and taught alot about health and physical fitness then that I still use today. He was my inspiraton for maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious foods and exercising on a regular basis. Thanks Jack for your creating this opportunity in my life.

In 1945 I had just gotten married, but my new wife had to finish six months at Univ. of Nevada, Reno. I was Barracks Officer at NAS Alameda. Needing some form of recreation. and recalling my weightlifting days at Univ. of Ga., I ventured to downtown Oakland to an upstairs gym. Its founder in 1936 was one Jack LaLanne. For three months I trained with him now and then. We became friendly, but I am sorry to say I remember very little of that time. He was born in 1915, I in 1917. He had no fame I was aware of. Maybe he was a pioneer even then! Vaughn Davis Bornet

To Mrs. Lalanne and the many friends of Jack I send you my sincere condolences. I remember the exercise show and the show with the juicer, amazing. The death of a loved one is one of the most devastating experiences a person can face. Be assured that the Bible comforts us by saying "Our Heavenly Father is near to those that are broken at heart and those who are crushed in spirit he saves". Recalling happy memories of the times you had together will help you to keep smiles on your faces and joy in your hearts.

My prayers go out to you Elaine. It was so obvious that the two of you were deeply in love with one another. I pray that God will strengthen you in your time of sorrow. I first met Jack LaLanne at Donte's jazz club in the seventies. He inspired me then, as he and Elaine did in recent years at some dinners hosted by mutual friends. Jack had an incredible mind and was kind and dear. He had a wonderful sense of humor and could sing well too. I think he is as inspiring in death as he was in life. In fact, I don't think he's gone at all. I think he's working out somewhere or training and pep-talking the saints or something! Your waistline is your lifeline. God bless that wonderful man! from Bob Long

"Jack was the man. Forget about all these steroid junkies. Jacks way is the only way. There are many people I wish I met in my life and when I read that they left us I become sad that I didn't make an effort to at least have a 5 minute conversation with them. Jack LaLanne was definitely one of these people. I remember before being in kindergarden working out with my mother in front of our black and white TV. All my mother needed was a chair and a towel. They were GREAT days. Jack was a great American who really cared for our country and its citizens well being. I hope we all keep his message alive by showing his upbeat You Tube videos to our children so they can learn his message and keep the fire burning. God bless Jack and Elaine. I will be looking at his videos on You Tube for many years to keep my spirits up. He was so good at that. Our country has lost a very positive man. My condolances to Elaine and the entire family. I know Jacks optimistic personality will leave a big hole in their home.

I remember watching the Jack LaLanne show when I was a kid with my mother and doing the exercises along with her. My mother watched his show every day and followed his nutritional advice all her life. As a result I too was influenced by his show and have always exercised and followed his advice on eating right. My husband and I bought his juicer and have followed his juice receipes along with some of our own and we love using it. He was a great man and had a powerful influence over my life. Dear Jack,

I know your life here on Earth is over but your message will always live on!
I was first introduced to you during my senior year of High School.
My dad had come home from the store with one of your juicer's and whipped up a glass of carrot apple juice. It was delicious! I soon wanted to own a juicer too! I read about your life and your philosophy and knew that I needed to make changes in my eating & exercise habits. You have been and will continue to be a inspiration in my life. Thank You! I am forever grateful and wish you much love and joy in your adventure into eternity.

I used to watch him on TV as a child and always loved the song he sang at the end of the show. I thought it was so great he had Happy with him. I can't believe I ran across this little piece of paper while cleaning my desk today, it was the words to his song and somehow they seem appropriate today. I can't read them without singing along...

"It's time to leave you,
to say goodbye.
These precious moments
just seem to fly.

Now here's my wish for you
May the good Lord bless and
keep you too."

...and may the Lord bless and keep you too, Jack. Somehow I think he'll have those angels singing along in no time!

In addition to all he has been to me, a handicapped woman who took Jack's advice and exercised always (though on a limited level) since the 1960s, Jack also had a wonderful singing voice and great show guests in his wife, pets, and others. While I attended high school, my mother was a faithful viewer. I'm looking online for DVDs of those wonderful old shows that I never got to see! My sincere condolences to Jack's wonderful, inspirationally healthy and godly family; and especially to you, Elaine. Death, be not proud

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

To the LaLanne Family,

Were very sorry for the loss of Jack.
My sister and I shared so many mornings with you and Jack as we cheerfully tried keeping up with your spirited sessions.
