Jim McKay Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 7, 2008.
NEW YORK (AP) - Jim McKay, the veteran and eloquent sportscaster thrust into the role of telling Americans about the tragedy at the 1972 Munich Olympics, has died. He was 86.

McKay died Saturday, said ABC, the network with which he was long affiliated. The cause of death was not immediately given.

McKay was host of ABC's "Wide World of Sports" for decades. The influential weekend series introduced viewers to all manners of strange, compelling and far-flung sports events.

But he was suddenly placed in the role of a newscaster in 1972 when Israeli athletes were kidnapped in Munich. As viewers followed the gripping story, McKay told how the hostages were killed in a commando raid.

McKay was the father of Sean McManus, president of CBS News and Sports.

Jim Mckay was to television sports what Edward R. Murrow was to television journalism. He quite simply, was and will remain the best in his profession. His unique and rare gift was to take complex sporting events and situations, break them down in a heartbeat and present them in terms which, anyone listening, could understand what they were watching. This comment is written almost 5 years after his passing, so this is a bit late, but is testament that his legacy will remain alive and powerful as long as there are sporting events to be covered and being broadcast in this country. I always enjoyed his insights into the sport he was covering at the time. He combined an overwhelming knowledge of all sports with his ever present sense of humor, quick wit and compassion. It can be argued that, there are many "fringe" sports which would not exist today if Mr. McKay had not covered those events early on in their infancy on ABC Wide World of Sports. In my opinion, there would be no X Games nor Professional Bowling and quite possibly others; and I think there would be far fewer people in America involved in following sports in general. He made small, seemingly crazy sports fun and memorable.

Of course, his studio coverage of the tragedy in Munich in 1972, will forever be viewed as brilliant, compassionate and professional. It is now more than 40 years since the Olympic Games in Munich and every time I watch a replay of that unspeakable event, I am drawn to tears as are millions more. He guided us through this story with humility, compassion and professionalism and an unrivaled sense of saying exactly what needs to be said without being maudlin or repetitious. And remember this was live TV, and not scripted. He did not overstate anything when understatement was needed. When he shook his head and said: "They are all gone", the entire world mourned. I can't imagine anyone else who could have chosen words so simple, yet overwhelmingly powerful, as he did in what was a highly emotional moment for him and all of us. Mr. McKay: you will forever stand as an icon and wordsmith and you have my undying respect and admiration for your career.

I hope Mr. McKay's family truly know how much his success was because of them. He obviously had a wonderful family who supported his endeavors. I cherished the times he brought my family together every Saturday afternoon for Wide World of Sports, and for each and every Olympics, and horse race he presented with his unmistakable passion and professionalism. He was not only one of a kind, but will remain an icon forever. God bless you Mr. McKay for giving us such a colorful world to believe in, and God bless your family for sharing you with us. There will never be another like you!

Jim McKay was a household name, with a familiar voice that will always be etched in our minds. To me he WAS the Olympics. The games haven't been the same without him. Surely he was as kind a man in his personal life as he appeared to be on the screen in our homes. He will be sadly missed.

Mr. McKay, was the very best and most believable broadcaster we will ever see. I will never forget "meeting" Jim McKay during the 1972 Olympics. He said something like, "they're gone; they're all gone," when the Israeli team was found dead -- a statment that resounded around the world.

I have always said that his 1972 Olympic coverage was the best news coverage ever.

A McKay Award may be in order, but who could ever match Jim?

No one.

To the family of Jim McKay,

I will always remember when I was a young person watching ABC's Wide World of Sports and even then thinking that Jim McKay and the program were inseparable. I vividly remember the 1972 Olympics and the fine job that Mr. McKay did in reporting that sad story to the rest of us. I am sure that the fine job that Mr. McKay did over the years, as a husband, father and as a sports reporter brings you great pride in the man that he was.

Take care and best wishes to all of you at this sad time.

To the family of Mr. Jim McKay,____ I'm writing to offer my heartfelt condolences in the death of your dear loved one. I've also taken this opportunity to share some encouraging words from the Bible that provide a real hope for the future. May you find comfort in God's words at John 5:28 and 29 that read "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out." Yes, God promises in the very near future a resurrection right here on a Paradise earth (a clean earth) with no one being sick and no more people dying. (Isaiah 25:8; Isaiah 33:24; Luke 23:43; 2 Peter 3:13) Even getting older will be a thing of the past according to Job 33:25._ At Revelation 21:3, 4, there is described the earth as God promises it will be. Yes, he promises an end to mournful tears, pain, suffering and death. Verse 5 adds that God will "MAKE ALL THINGS NEW." Truly the meek shall inherit the earth as Jesus Christ promised in the Sermon on the Mount. (Matthew 5:5) I hope your family find these words to be a real source of comfort during such a difficult time in your lives. May you draw close to God (Exodus 6:3; Psalm 83:18) in prayer, and the Bible promises that "he himself will sustain you.---Psalm 55:22_______________________________Sincerely,

My sincere condolences to the family of Jim McKay, I hope that you know what a difference he made. His calm compassionate handling of the Munich Olympics will be part of that story forever. He took a very sensitive situation and instead of hyping it as is commonplace today, he told the story in a calm way that gave you the imformation but let you know how explosive the situation was. They should rename the Sportscaster Emmy, the Jim McKay award. I doubt we will ever see anyone like him again. The sports world has lost one of the best.

MUCH MORE THAN SPORTS
James Kenneth McManus
September 24, 1921 – June 7, 2008

We heard the, "thrill of victory,
and the agony of defeat"
We all knew when he said it
That, we’d be in for a treat.

Through the, "Wide World Of Sports"
He showed us places, never seen
From the North Pole to the South
And all of those, in between.

He spent years spanning the Globe
And brought us news and sports
And from the Olympics in Munich
He gave us all, those sad reports.

His passion was the sport of kings
Founder of the, "Maryland Million Day"
His love of horses and their races
Lasting, until his final day.

A legend in the sports industry
But, he left us so much more
Showed, it’s how you play the game
It’s not how much, you score.

This World will be a lesser place
Without his great charm and wit
Yes, he surely will be missed
Much more, than just a little bit.
