John Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 8, 2005.
Pioneering black publisher John H. Johnson, whose Ebony magazine countered stereotypical coverage of blacks, died Monday. He was 87.

LaTrina Blair, promotions manager with Chicago-based Johnson Publishing Co., confirmed Johnson's death and said the company would release a formal statement later Monday afternoon.

Born into an impoverished family in Arkansas, Johnson went into business with a $500 loan secured by his mother's furniture and built a publishing and cosmetics empire that made him one of the wealthiest and most influential black men in the United States.

Beyond his own economic stature, Johnson broke new ground by bringing positive portrayals of blacks into a mass-market publication and encouraging corporations to use black models in advertising aimed at black consumers.

Johnson built Ebony from a circulation of 25,000 on its first press run in November 1945 to a monthly circulation of 1.9 million in 1997. Jet magazine, a newsweekly, was founded in 1951 and a third magazine, Ebony Man, a monthly men's magazine, was started in 1985.

Born Jan. 19, 1918 in Arkansas City, Ark., Johnson moved to Chicago with his family at age 15. After graduating from public schools, Johnson attended the University of Chicago and Northwestern University.

While working at black-owned Supreme Life Insurance Co., where he started as a clerk, Johnson founded Johnson Publishing Co. in 1942. Its first magazine was "Negro Digest" a journal that condensed articles of interest to blacks and published the poems and short stories of black writers.

Johnson used Supreme Life's mailing list to offer discount charter subscriptions. To persuade a distributor to take the magazine, he got co-workers to ask for it at newsstands on Chicago's South Side. Friends bought most of the copies, convincing dealers the magazine was in demand, while Johnson reimbursed the friends and resold the copies they had bought.

The tactic was used in New York, Philadelphia and Detroit, and within a year, "Negro Digest" was selling 50,000 copies a month. The magazine, is no longer published.

Johnson launched Ebony just after World War II, as black soldiers were returning home. At the time there were no black players in major league baseball and little black political representation.

With blacks' income far below white Americans, the idea of a black publishing company was widely dismissed. Civil rights leader Roy Wilkins advised Johnson to forget the publishing business and save himself a lot of disappointment; Wilkins later acknowledged he gave Johnson bad advice.

Ebony -- named by Johnson's wife, Eunice -- was created to counter stereotypical portrayals of blacks in white-owned newspapers, magazines and broadcast media. The monthly magazine generally shuns critical articles about black problems, instead highlighting the positive in black life.

"We try to seek out good things, even when everything seems bad," he said in explaining the magazine's purpose. "We look for breakthroughs, we look for people who have made it, who have succeeded against the odds, who have proven somehow that long shots do come in."

Beginning with television maker Zenith Corp., Johnson broke the barrier of major white companies advertising in black media. Johnson sent an ad salesman to Detroit every week for 10 years before an auto manufacturer agreed to advertise in the magazine.

"We couldn't do it then by marching, and we couldn't do it by threatening," Johnson said of gaining advertisers. "We had to persuade people that it was in their best interest to reach out to black consumers in a positive way."

Johnson also used market research to convince companies to use black models in their advertising, increasing the appeal of their products among blacks.

Along with his wife, Johnson is survived by a daughter, Linda Johnson Rice, president of Johnson Publishing.

John was in good company in the "Million Dollar Backfield." When he came to play he gave it his all. That dedication and hard work will always be remembered, "For to this end we are working hard and exerting ourselves, because we have rested our hope on a living God, who is a Savior of all sorts of men, especially of faithful ones."~ 1 Timothy 4:10

As a former employee of Johnson
Publishing Company, my heart goes out to Mrs. Johnson, Linda, and many others who suffered this great loss. During my time of employment at Johnson Publishing Company (1990-1995), Mr. Johnson was a father, teacher, and mentor. I will truly miss him. But, I know that - to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord! Mr. Johnson is resting in peace.

Hi my name is Stephanie. I didn't know much about John H. Johnson until i had to do a book report about him in my entrepreneurship class and I now realize that he was a great man who accomplished a great amount of things even though he grew up in a time when African-Americans were treated badly. He also helped pave the way for some entrepreneurs. I know he is truly missed and I hope God may continue to bless his family.

Dear Johnson Family,

May God Be you. I feel honored to know the work that I do (The Minute Tour) is much in part to the Courage and Dedication of Mr. Johnson, he has paved the way for many of us. My generation has fallen short in terms of paying back the debt of our ancestors and I hope the work that we are doing will have the blessing of Mr. Johnson and I hope he is traveling with us as we seek to place Black history into the missing links of history; the history of our ancestors. God Bless

My condolences go out to the family of John H. Johnson. Chicago, along with all of us who are trying to succeed in life, has truly lost a role model. I just started reading his autobiography and I must say, this will always be a reference book that I will refer to over and over again throughout my entire life. One of my favorite quotes from his book, states:

“…if you can somehow think and dream of success in small steps, every time you make a step, every time you accomplish a small goal, it gives you confidence to go on from there.”

To the family of John H. Johnson. He gave us (the community) many years of enrichment and advice along with entertainment. Please, I hope that this will continue with the family.

To many times, we find that the "Black Media" changes to benefit themselves, not to help the community. When this happens a generation is lost. I hope that the black media learns from your past and present examples of being informative. "Black" is not just about how many color photos, or events of the up most hi-society. We need to reach the black low-middle class and tell them how to rise. You did that. And I really thank you.

May you rest in peace and god bless your family.

God bless and keep you; may the memories forever be sweet.

I had the occasion to come to Chicago as a college student in the early 1970's. I was busy supervising the trip and did not have an opporuntity to see Chicago. However, I did take the time to leave the hotel and go next door to the Johnson Publishing building and do a sightseeing tour. It was the only thing I did for my personal gratification while there. I remain as proud of your father today as I was on that day.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. There just aren't sufficient words to express my feelings about what Mr. John. H. Johnson has done not only for African-Americans but for people of African descent around the world! His publications gave a face, a voice and information in its amazingly clear, precise and informative way; with integrity and style. His effects on the Civil Rights struggle is immeasurable!

Last year I lost an Aunt to the same ailment, now I feel as though I have lost an Uncle. Rest peacefully and to his family rejoice in his memories!

Amazing grace! I talked with my only son of 15 years and told him about Black America's greatest loss and I charged him to "make his mark". It is really sad that this year we have lost "John H. Johnson", Johnnie Cochran and Luther Vandross and many more. I cried at the store when I saw the Jet magazine this week, I know that you always tell the truth but I wasn't ready to except the fact that Mr. Johnson is gone! I was shocked! I need my son to make it. I so admire the class, respect and especially the family's humbleness. They are beautiful but never show case their things in the media. God Bless you all. I am proud of his daughter and son-in-law and that beautiful grand daughter. Mrs. Johnson I am sending you a huge hug! You have preserved well! May God Bless and Keep you. Your husband seemed to have lots of pride and respect for your family What a Blessing to show my husband and son. Praise God!

The Johnson Family:

I will always remember when I in sixth grade and Jet Magazine featured Chaka Khan on the cover and sneaking that book out of my parents home and taking it school. My fellow classmates grabbed at the book and nearly tore it apart. It was at that time, I realized just what great magazines Jet and Ebony were and still are. I also remember that Johnson published a teen magazine, though, I cannot remember the name of that magazine. I do remember it was an alternative to teenbeat and other magazines of that kind. Like Jet and Ebony it featured people that represented us in the entertainment business.

Mr. Johnson leaves a rich legacy, he saw a void in our community and filled it. Not only with his magazines but with his Fashion Fair products. When I think of a pioneer or trailblazer, I think John H Johnson. I have to add that Fashion Fair is the only lipstick that I can wear, it does not have the loud scents that other national brand lipsticks carry.

With Mr. Johnson's passing our community is once again left with a void. This void will never be replaced, I am deeply sorry for your loss.

My parents have always had subsciptions to your fine magazines. I don't remember a time growing up when Jet and Ebony were not a staple in our home. It remains that way even today.

Thank you, The Johnson Family for being a part of my family through the years and keeping us informed whether it's nationally, entertaining, socially, etc.

You are in my thoughts and prayers and I am truly sorry for your loss.

Celebrate, for one of God's children has been called home to be with Him. I remember meeting Mr. & Mrs. Johnson when I came to JPC to visit my cousin, Jena Norman who worked for Mrs. Johnson at the time. The Johnson's were so nice and had so many kind words of wisdom and encouragement to share with my son and I. I believe in the dream of "not accepting failure and realizing success". I am a 42 y/o black female.Seeing the publications of Ebony/Jet magazines as a teenager helped me to see not only the outer beauty of my black people but after reading the contents of the material the real truth was revealed about so many of our great forerunners and ancestors and how we have survived until this day against all odds. Mr Johnson has given us a legacy of positive influence despite our struggles. He encourages and motivates us to move forward in the pursuit of excellence from generation to generation. My sympathy goes out to his family. What a legend we have lost. John Johnson, long ago, saw the need for "us" to see "us" in a positive light. It's so sad that in this day and age we are still bombarded with negative stories and images of Blacks in the mainstream media. Negro Digest, Ebony, Jet, Ebony Man, and Fashion Fair Cosmetics as well, showed us how good we truly are, how beautiful we are, and how deserving we are of the same rights and privileges of every other American. He showed us that we can be doctors, lawyers, engineers, politicians, ministers, educators, editors, publishers, authors, astronauts, entrepreneurs, and anything else we could imagine. Before Ebony and Jet came along, no one showed us, told us, or allowed us to believe that we could overcome any obstacle to realize our dreams. John Johnson showed us through his business, publications, philanthropy, and his own life example that the impossible could indeed become possible. May God rest his soul and bless his family, friends, employees, and all of us who loved, admired, and respected this great man.

Mr. Johnson's autobiography got me through a very tough time in my life. Once I read his book I than began to realize that my destiny was in my hands and hard times do not last forever. One of the things that was written in his book was the letter his mother wrote to the president of the United States and the other was the degree of patients he used regarding when and when not to expose his knowledge.

John H. Johnson was a visionary par excellence

He was an epitome of hard work and a pillar of and for our community.

He came, he saw and conquered! He was a magnate with a social mission.

He performed exemplarily well in his mission of portraying African-Americans in positive lights, his efforts were instrumental to reducing the stereotypical portrayals, of Africans, African-Americans and all peoples of African descents, in the so-called main stream American Press, and particular and in Western Press in general.

He was a renowned philanthropist and a socially responsible tycoon

John H. Johnson was an entrepreneur extraordinaire!

I pray and hope that his successors keep the flag flying for our people.

To the Family of John H. Johnson,

I was so sorry to hear of his passing. He was a great inspiration to me and so many others. I met him at my college graduation at the Univ. of Ar at Pine Bluff in 1989. He was our guest speaker. He asked me did I know he went to elementary school in Eudora and I told him no I didn't know. He congratulated me on winning an award and he was glad to see an Eudorian win an award. He changed my life that day. Our prayers are with the family and just remember he had help so many folks along the way and his living was not in vain.

As I look at his picture, I can't help for moaning this song: May the work I've done, speak for me. May the life I live, speak for me, and May the service I give, speak for me..

Sleep on Brother Johnson....

To the Family of Mr. Johnson, our prayers are with you. He was blessed and lived a good life. I met him at the University of Ar at Pine Bluff in 1989. He was the guest speaker at my graduation. He told me that he went to elementary school in Eudora and he was proud to see me, a Eudorian, win such an award. I was so surpised. I didn't know he had lived in Eudora at one time. My prayers are with you and all the folks from Eudora, Arkansas thoughts and prayers are with you!! He was such an inspiration for me and millions of others.

God provided the world with a beacon to show us all what can happen when one dreams big, thinks positive and is courageous and determined enough to make those dreams come true.

Thank you Mr. Johnson for showing the whole world that black people are strong, intelligent, creative, emotional and comassionate.

My sympathies go out to the Johnson family...God bless.

John H. Johnson was a major, major figure in the social and political history of this country and the world. His contributions to our knowledge base were monumental.

I was born & raised in Chicago in 1942, the same year Negro Digest was started. Ebony, Jet, Negro Digest and Mr. Bennett's books were always a part of our household. I left Chicago for college in the early '60s and well remember my indignation when I was unable to find Johnson's publications in predominantly white university bookstores and libraries or anywhere in those local towns. My folks would mail current copies to me. That, of course, is all very, very different now. Johnson publications are everywhere.

We should all be thankful to Mr. Johnson for his vision, consistency of message and commitment to humankind, especially Black people. He fulfilled his mission in life, did it his way and made us all better in the process.
