WASHINGTON (AP) - Family and friends are mourning the death of a World War II fighter pilot who helped lead a daring Allied air invasion of Burma.

Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. John R. Alison died Monday at his home in Washington. He was 98.

His son, John P. Alison, says his father died of natural causes.

Air Force Magazine reported in 2009 that Alison helped lead a mission in 1943 that flew more than 9,000 troops, nearly 1,300 mules and 250 tons of supplies into the Burmese jungle. Most arrived aboard stealthy glider planes of a type Alison had never flown until the mission began.

John P. Alison says his father will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
