Jose Uribe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 8, 2006.
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) – Former San Francisco Giants shortstop Jose Uribe was killed early Friday in a car crash in his native Dominican Republic, authorities said.

Uribe, 47, was in his sport utility vehicle when it crashed about 3 a.m. (0700 GMT) on a highway 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of the capital, Santo Domingo, the Dominican National Police said in a statement.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

Uribe's death was confirmed to The Associated Press by Glovis Reyes, a longtime friend of the ballplayer and a former member of the Dominican Congress.

"It's a very sad incident," said Pablo Peguero, a local baseball scout. "He was a great player for the Giants, a serious man and dedicated to his family."

Earlier this year, Uribe, whose son, Juan, plays shortstop for the Chicago White Sox, ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Juan Baron, his hometown in San Cristobal province where police said he was driving to at the time of the crash.

"Uribe was a very loved person in Juan Baron. He was like the lord of the town," Reyes said.

While playing for the Giants, Uribe would return to his home country frequently and played in the country's winter baseball league. In recent years, he owned a hardware store in his hometown.

Uribe played 10 seasons in the major leagues from 1984 to 1993, mostly with the Giants. He began his career with one season in St. Louis and ended it with one in Houston. He had a career batting average of .241 and a fielding percentage of .969.

Estimada Familia Uribe,

I grew up and lived right near Jose and his cousin Wilson in Foster City. I was only 16 years old then and I used to hang out with them all the time. I used to work out with Wilson all the time and also with Jose a few times too. Such a nice guy! I have a lot of memories of those times and they will live on forever...

RIP JOSE!

I live in the Bay Area and followed Jose's baseball career since 1985 when he first became a Giant.
I've never seen anyone turn the double play like Jose, he was simply the best.
Great footwork, unbelievably quick release, and always smiling and having fun on the field.

I had the chance to meet Jose a couple times during his Giants playing days, and he was very gracious and took time to sign my souveneirs and speak with me. It was quite a thrill to meet my sports idol.

Years later I ran into his double play partner (Robbie Thompson) at a concert in Concord. I told him how much fun it was watching him and Jose playing together. I could see the absolute joy in his face as my statement brought the memories flowing back to him. He replied that playing with Jose were great times for him. They were great for me as well.

I'll miss you Jose, and my thoughts and prayers go out to your friends and family.

I'll never forget that deafening chant that used to roar across Candlestick Park;
OOH... ...REEBAY!!!

RIP Jose

I was born and raised in San Franciso and a lifelong fan of the SF Giants. One of my fondest memories of days at the stick was the chant U R I B E. U U R I B E! I was so sad to hear of his accident. There are no accidents. He has gone to serve his god. May peace be with his family at this time of great loss.

Words can never do justice in a moment like the one you're encountering now. But take heart that we are here on earth for a known purpose and when that time has been settled by God He gently allow us into his loving prsence. So take heart and courage it's only part of a process that started back in the Garden of Eden and contines on til today. That in itself proves the faithfulness of our heavenly Father. May God bless and keep you and yours in this time of bereavement.

Uribe Family,

My thoughts are with you all.
You have my deepest sympathy.
One thing that will help us get throught any situation is God's word the Bible.
And there He asures us:
"Jehovah is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves."
May these words give you a measure of comfort and strenght to endure in this time of such deep sorrow.

With heartfelt sorrow,

I grew up a Giants fan in the 80s, back when Jose Uribe was a fixture on the team. I still remember going to games back at Candlestick Park. hen Uribe came up, the crowd came alive - half the stadium would begin calling, "OOOOOOOO!" and the other half would respond, "REE-BAY!" You don't often see that sort of response to slcik-fielding short stops who bat eighth in the order - but the San Francisco fans always loved Jose Uribe.
