Julia Carson Obituary
Carson died after a battle with lung cancer, spokeswoman Vanessa Summer said.
Carson announced last month that she was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and that she would not run next year for a seventh term representing Indianapolis' 7th District. She had not been in Washington since September, when she was hospitalized with a leg infection.
She had said that she expected to return to Washington after recuperating, but a doctor then diagnosed that her lung cancer, which had been in remission, was back.
Carson was first elected to Congress in 1996. She championed children's issues, women's rights and efforts to reduce homelessness and was a staunch opponent of the war in Iraq.
Carson was born to a single mother who worked as a housekeeper. She graduated in 1955 from the same segregated high school school as basketball star Oscar Robertson.
She began her political career in the 1960s when then-Rep. Andy Jacobs Jr. hired her to work in his office. Jacobs encouraged Carson to run for the Indiana Legislature in 1972 - the first of more than two dozen victories in local, legislative and congressional elections. She ran for Congress in 1996 after Jacobs retired.
Funeral arrangements were pending.

Ms Carson is and was a woman of such greatness always took care of things and always did her very best to make a difference here in the city of Indiana and any and every person who knew her loves her. I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Carson, through my son Adairius Gardner. I couldn't help thinking that if he had a portion of her strength and dignity, he would go far in life. To the family, thank you for sharing her with Adairius. She will go down in history as a great american, who championed the cause of all people. May God bless you and know that she is in Heaven pleading the case on your behalf. Isn't that just like her.

I had the distinct honor of serving as a page for Ms. Carson when I was a teenager. I remember her as a kind and caring woman...very warm. Powerful, too. As an adult, I love what she stood for and count myself among the people she left behind who will continue her good work.

We are truly sadden by the lost of a "true soldier"!! In spite of all the hurt and pain we feel because of this devasting lost, we honor the Lord for the legacy Julia leaves behind. God is a God that rewards his people. To the Carson Family thank you so much for allowing her to serve us the people of Indiana in such a remarkable way. Your allowance of Julia's ministry of giving back to her community has touched the lives of millions. Thank you for your sacrifice of time with her. but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
