JUSTIN STANFORD COLIN Died at the age of 87 peacefully at home in Santa Fe surrounded by family and loved ones following a brief illness. Born and raised in New York City, he attended Harvard University at age 15, interrupting his studies at the outbreak of WWII to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he attained the rank of Captain as an aerial gunner and instructor. Attended Yale Law School and joined the United States Department of Justice, Civil Division in Washington, D.C. In 1965, he returned to New York and launched a distinguished and wide-ranging career in finance. He became general partner at Lazard Freres where he organized and ran their securities trading operations. He was a pioneer in the development and use of derivative securities and built the first securities option writing department at a major investment banking firm. In 1971, he became senior partner at Colin, Hochstin Co., a brokerage firm he co-founded. In 1974, he co-founded the Zeckendorf Company with partner William Zeckendorf, specializing in hotels and real estate development. A keen mind and lover of the arts, he served as chairman of the board of the American Ballet Theater from 1974-78, bringing to the American stage such dance luminaries as Mikhail Baryshnikov and choreographer Twyla Tharp. In 1985, he married Mary Lee Potter and they moved to Santa Fe in 1989. In Santa Fe, he worked until recently as a financial advisor at UBS. An avid patron of the Santa Fe Opera, he also served as trustee of the Rio Grande School; director of the Santa Fe Performing Arts; and Trustee of the St. Vincent Hospital Foundation. He is survived by his wife; their three children Emily, Justin, and Nicholas as well as his two daughters by a previous marriage, Laura and Ann; four grandchildren; and countless friends who will remember his encyclopediac knowledge of literature and music; wry sense of humor; Gatsbyesque wardrobe; Jack Russell terriers; indefatigable hikes; and hand-grown rose garden. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 16 at Berardinelli's at 9:15 a.m. followed by burial at National Cemetary at 11:15 a.m.
