Kenny Rankin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 9, 2009.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kenny Rankin, a brilliant pop vocalist and highly regarded musician-songwriter whose stylings ranged from jazz to pop to the world music influences he picked up as a child in New York, has died of complications related to lung cancer, his record company announced Monday. He was 69.

Rankin died Sunday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Mack Avenue Records spokesman Don Lucoff said.

The musician, who first gained acclaim as one of the guitarists on Bob Dylan's landmark 1965 album, "Bringing it all Back Home," had been preparing to record an album of new material when he became ill a few weeks ago. Recording sessions scheduled with producer Phil Ramone were canceled as his health began to deteriorate.

"That he was still at the top of his game is one of the saddest parts of his passing for me," Denny Stilwell, president of Mack Avenue Records, said in a statement. "He performed the new material in our office over the last few months and his voice was still in its finest form — he sounded absolutely amazing. Our hearts and prayers are with his family."

Rankin wrote and recorded the pop standard "Peaceful" and also wrote "In The Name of Love," which was recorded by Peggy Lee, and "Haven't We Met," performed by Carmen McRae and Mel Torme.

His own "The Kenny Rankin Album" was recorded live in 1976 with a 60-piece orchestra.

Rankin, who signed with Decca Records while still in his teens, once said his music career really began in the fourth grade when he sang "O Holy Night" in a school Christmas play and his teacher walked up to him afterward, patted him on the head and said, "Kenneth, that was lovely."

"She set me on the path in music that I find myself on today," he said.

After signing with Decca in the late 1950s he released a handful of singles before moving on to Columbia Records, also the home of Dylan. There, he took part in the recording of "Bringing it All Back Home," the album in which Dylan moved firmly from an all-acoustic folk music sound to an electric mixture of pop and rock 'n' roll.

Soon after, he made his first appearance on "The Tonight Show," where he impressed host Johnny Carson so much that Carson contributed liner notes to Rankin's first album, 1967's "Mind Dusters." Other albums included "Family," ''Like a Seed," ''Inside and "Silver Morning:"

He would go on to appear as Carson's "Tonight Show" guest more than 20 times.

His supple tenor voice on such recordings as "Spanish Harlem," "'Round Midnight" and the Beatles' "Blackbird" and "I've Just a Face" also won him the respect of fellow musicians as a singer's singer.

Mack Records said he so impressed the Beatles' Paul McCartney that McCartney asked him to perform "Blackbird" when he and songwriting partner John Lennon were inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

Rankin spent much of the past 20 years touring, although he returned to the studio in the mid-1990s to release a pair of albums, "Professional Dreamer" and "Here In My Heart." He also released a Christmas album in 1999.

Born in New York City on Feb. 10, 1940, Rankin was raised in the city's Washington Heights neighborhood, where he said he grew up listening to a broad spectrum of music, including Afro-Cuban, jazz, Top 40 and Brazilian.

He is survived by his son, Chris Rankin, daughters Chanda Rankin and Jena Rankin-Ray and a granddaughter.

His record label said funeral arrangements are pending.

2 am on a dark cold January in New Haven. I am in labor with my 1st & only child. My best friend puts this album on ; while I writh away on the floor, silver morning marks that day of our lives forever. I was able to meet that daughter recently - she was adopted 45 yrs ago. That song is part of her, & my soul, to be transported there any time I play the song/album. My thanks to Kenny for that special time in life, marked by his sweetness.

I discovered Kenny when he did an interview on a local NY TV show in the 60's. I believe he performed "Come Away Melinda" and I have been a fan ever since. I've seen him in concert at small venues in NY, NJ & PA. He actually signed my guitar in 2007 after a show in New Hope PA. Not only did he have the voice of an angel but the chord changes in his arrangements were beautiful and creative. He told me he was self taught, which only highlights his incredible talent. It amazes me how often he comes to mind. He is truly missed.

I loved his playing and singing since I first heard him in the 70's. His voice and pattern in the song was so thrilling!...He was one of a kind...I hope his children might have been able to carry some his talent on. I passed his playing and music on to Raul Lara a guitarist I used to hear locally in Marin County, CA and he loved it took some style and method from him on his songs....Just remembering him tonight.

The most beautiful singer ever. Listened to 'When Sunny Gets Blue' over and over and over as a teenager. Heartbroken at the time to hear of his passing. Hope his family knows they will see (and hear) him again.

I had the pleasure of bringing Kenny on stage for a full week at Jazz Alley in Seattle, sat and talked in the green room for hours. I had not heard him until we recieved his CD, after listening to it over and over and then seeing him live on stage I became then and I remain today a Big Fan! RIP Kenny

I was never privileged to meet you, or even to see you perform, but your voice, phrasing and emotional power has been the biggest influence throughout my carer as a performing and recording singer.
It sounds trite to say that I knew you through your songs, and yet that is how I feel.
I was touring in 1978 with your mate, Barry Maguire, who payed me the most unbelievable compliment when he told me that I reminded him of you and that you and I would get on really well together.
Even though I know that nothing is forever, I was and am still devastated that you left us when you did.
You are sorely missed and there will never be another singer in your genre who could ever hold a candle to your intoxicating energy.
Much love.

There will never, ever be a voice and person like Kenny Rankin. He sang from his heart and soul. Every word he sang had so much love behind it. I still listen to him daily and miss him. The performers of today could not hold a note to Kenny. I hope he is still singing up above.

Kenny was a very good caring friend of mine, He personally got me in the AA Program in LA and provided me with a Pro-Bono Lawyer that helped me with a legal matter.

The last time I saw him is when he played the Cutting Room in NYC and I was blessed to be able to spend a couple of days with him.

Kenny, will always have a special place in my heart.

Love your songs today.

May 29, 2019

My husband first told me he loved me by putting on I Love You on our second date. On our third date, he asked me to marry him. That was 39 years ago. That first year, I played that album every day after my husband went to work.

We saw Kenny perform years later in Pittsburgh at The Luna, with Diane Shore. What a special and memorable night that was. Kenny did not feel well that night but he was perfect n his performance.

When we learned of his death, we both cried like babies. It's been ten years and we still find it so unbelievably hard to accept.

He was so unique. So very special and extremely insightful. His songs and interpretations of songs were unparalleled. He truly was a genius with vocals and musical notes. What Matters Most still makes me cry.

On a perfect night, outside on our deck under the stars, listening to Kenny sing, we are young again, he is alive, and the possibilities are endless.

I hope his family finds solace in the fact that their beautiful Kenny is still bringing peace to the souls in this chaotic life.

Kenny was my all time and still is my all time favorite vocalist. So much so, that I TRY to emulate his methods and vocal qualities. I just can only achieve a 50% level, maybe!??? Kenny sent me, "Like a Seed" on request the summer of his death. I will forever be grateful and it is a prized possession. I saw him Sing in Palo Alto and SF in the 70's .... he was SO good live. I miss him so. I yearn for a replacement vocalist, but I am the only one I know that can come close..so far. But, it was not only his Vocals. HE WAS a great guitarist. To his Grandkids: listen to him. LISTEN to him. ENJOY Grandpa.

To the Grandchild of Mr.Kenny Rankin,

Listen to all of your grandfather's music. Hear the joy and purity in his voice. Learn them by heart and sing with him. And then look at the picture of him holding you under his chin and know that YOU were the greatest joy in his life. His eyes, closed with bliss as he cradles you, his face as soothed and peaceful as it has ever been.

Never has he been so sublimely happy, until you came to him.
You brought this pure happiness and utter completion to him.

And Yes, as you will read below, his voice, the way he sung, was a gift to the world, and in actuality with no exaggeration, your Grandfather WAS the greatest singer who has ever lived, but it was his family, your mother, YOU, who made his heart sing, that gave him the breadth and inspiration to share his genius with our world.

Please know that your Grandfather adored you so very, very much and he was filled with the greatest of pride when you arrived. YOU became his life and his true legacy. Because of you, we who are left without his most beautiful presence know, he is still here for no other reason, than to watch over you as you grow and continue to make him proud.

He will never leave you, and that you can be assured of. That is how he loved, where the bonds of love are always present, even through his passing, those bonds remain, they survive, thrive and continue so that he can guide and protect his most adorable YOU, his greatest love in life. YOU.

Blessed, Blessed Little One languish in the warmth of his enduring love for you. YOU were why he was.

Miss you so much, Kenny! You were such a gift to the music industry, so many people loved you and your music. Your beautiful and oh, so unique voice was such a gift to this world. I lost count of how many times I saw you perform, but each time was like a breath of fresh air! What a pleasure it was to get to know you as a friend. Your music is still my "go to" when I need an escape or a dose of joy. Peace to your loved ones, may they always know you touched so many lives, and filled this world with the gift of you. Blessings, Rankin Family.

Just a fan... saw him open for a few acts in the 1970s. His voice was angelic. Saw him again in the 90's across the street from home in a local hole-in-the-wall in San Diego that had the BEST acts come through it. He was brilliant. I listen to him at work on You Tube. I still can't get enough of him.

You will always be loved and remembered, Kenny...

I met Kenny in Hawaii where he did a gig at our club Jazz Plus. He was there with his daughter and it looked like she was very happy to be spending time in Hawaii with him. In fact, I believe he cancelled part of his tour to spend more time with her and enjoying life. he told me he was proud of his son who was a manager at the Hollywood club Roxy on Sunset. He seemed happy to share stories of his family and was a loving albeit busy father. I am saddened to hear of his passing. He was an extremely talented and soulful person. I had the pleasure of interviewing Kenny Rankin during the early 1990s, just after the release of his heartwarming "Because of You" cd...also enjoyed his one-man performance show at the original Yoshi's at Claremont and College avenues in Oakland, California. His voice was one of the most crystal clear tenors that I have ever heard. He also possessed a relaxed, down-to-earth, humorous vibe that infused his music. His interpretative and inimitable style, rich range, and ability to allow you to honestly feel the lyrics that he sang is unmatched. God's blessings to his family always. He was a treasure and truly followed his own path, which was endearing and admirable in a mercurial music industry! Liz Goodwin (SF Bay Area)

I am at a loss to express my condolences. I grew up with Keeny Rankin's music and have been touched by its beauty and creativity. In my early 30's I found a way to contact him and I was his guest at the Guthrie. A front row seat to hear his golden voice and and his incredible guitar playing.

His music and genius will never be forgotten! To his family my deepest sympathy. Again, His music and voice will live forever.

With sincere respect and humility.

Today is October 2, 2014 and I am finding out that Kenny died over 5 years ago. I was fortunate to see Kenny play at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr, PA in 1975 and again in Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 1985. I completely admired his style of music and was happy to relay that to him during a break at his show in Ft. Lauderdale and that his music, 'got me through college'. I remember that he was happy to hear that and I believe he was a real genuine man, no airs-he simply loved his craft and loved hearing from his fans. Blessing Kenny.

I was so sad to learn today that Kenny Rankin died in 2009. I was curious to see if he was doing a tour, and read the news. I first heard him in 1978, on an LP. I've loved his voice and guitar playing ever since. I was fortunate enough to see him in the early 80's at a small venue in San Diego, called "The Bachannal", and then at a Jazz Festival in San Diego in 1990. So sorry he's gone.

I remember where I was when I heard Kenny passed away. I was in Times Square at the Iridium and told the bartender he passed and he said "wow, no way". Jose Feliciano was standing in for Les Paul and the news spread quick. He was well loved. My sister loved Kenny's music too and I got a good friend at WNOP Radio to have Kenny sign an album for my sister that said "Happy Birthday" and Kenny did this with a smile. What a talent, what a heart and I cant help but think what a humanitarian he was when listening to "The Fall". RIP Kenny, you are still loved and your music will never die.

I lost my best friend Octavio when I was 20, I remember that I gave him the K.R. Album (with Don Costa´s orchestra) days before his car accident during the night of the 24th of December, while he was driving from Mexico City to the US. At that time he was in a very sad mood because his first love relationship was over; he told me that the album was his best companion during that special period of his lifetime, that was about to end. Kenny´s soft voice, his lyrics and intimate music arrangements, have always awaken the best of me, I' am sure it did the same for him, this gift was the best for him.

I lived in Southern California in the early 1970s where I was introduced to Kenny's music. I still have 4 or 5 of his albums. I think if I had a choice to leave this earth with only a small collection of music selections Kenny Rankin's music would be one of the top 3 . . . James Taylor and Steely Dan being the other two. I don't have the right words to express how much peace, joy, and happiness listening to Kenny's music has ALWAYS brought me. I lost touch with his career until a year ago when I learned he had already passed. My condolences to his family, his granddaughter, his wife . . . his children whose picture I remember from one of his albums . . . the two little daughters with their little innocent bare bodies against his. So, thank you Kenny Rankin, for the utter joy you gave me and so many others so long ago and for the legacy of your music that we can all continue to enjoy and share with new souls who come into our world. You remain a favored troubadour . . . for all eternity. Most appreciatively from the bottom of my heart, a fan, Jennie Campos, Tucson, Arizona

Such a talent! His style and uncanny ability to reconnect with so many tunes that others had presented before him, giving new life and often times a completely welcomed rendition with a new twist that made his version his own....his music touched so many and will live on forever! Rightly so, a true artist with distinction! Thank you dear friend for all you have given us!

Kenny touched me like no other singer ever has. His interpretations of popular songs we're many times better than the original renditions! The world is a lesser place because of his passing!

His music helped me win my wife 31 years ago. He inspired me to be romantic and serenade my wife to be and it worked! I had not listened to his music in years and when I woke up this morning I had to listen to "Peaceful" and it was then that I realized he had died. What a loss, what a gift he was to the world.

Kenny Rankin has the smoothest vocals. His music is just light and personal. His songs are classics and yet, "very human". The world will miss a true music legend. God bless your soul, Kenny. Thanks for making great music in your lifetime. We will always have you in our hearts." - Alec Santos (Manila, Philippines)

He sing Hiding inside myself People keep clapping some crying also he sing after the roses . The only thing he didn't sing is what matters most which one of my favorite. First of all, I am truly embarassed to admit that I don't recall ever hearing Kenny Rankin's voice although (1) I'm from Kenny's "'hood" in the Heights, (2) his age, (3) and having heard so many of the Heightsters mention Kenny's many talents! Thanks G-d for the technology that allows us to listen to the fabulous talents who has passed onto the other side. RIP, homie
