Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 15, 2005.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Lane Smith, a longtime character who played a small-town district attorney who crossed words with Joe Pesci in "My Cousin Vinny," died Monday. He was 69.

Smith, who also played Richard Nixon in the TV movie "The Final Days" and Daily Planet editor Perry White in "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," died at his home in Los Angeles, according to his wife, Debbie Benedict Smith.

Born in Memphis, Smith appeared in numerous films and television shows. Most recently, he appeared in the 2000 movie "The Legend of Bagger Vance," starring Will Smith and Matt Damon.

Lane Smith also appeared in the original stage production of "Glengarry Glen Ross" and the revival of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."

Film credits include "The Distinguished Gentleman," "Son in Law," "The Mighty Ducks" and "The Hi-Lo Country."

Besides his wife, Smith is survived by his son Robbie, 18, and a brother and sister. He also has a 19-year-old stepson.

I’ve never been a super-big TV viewer, but just seeing Lane portraying Nixon in “The Final Days” was enough to make a fan of me. That conviction was further solidified when I watched him play a fictional anchorman named Emmet Seaborn in “From the Earth to the Moon,” another magnificent contribution to the genre by Tom Hanks. I have consequently resolved to watch Lane in as many other roles as I can. I’m an older “Boomer” and consequently have seen many very good actors; I have come to rank Lane Smith as one of THE best. It’s difficult for me to find the words to describe my feelings concerning his death from the horrid ALS, which many know better as Lou Gehrig’s disease, an affliction that medical science seems unable to cure. It is good that we have a film industry that has enabled Lane Smith to give ALS a giant middle finger. It has been 18 years since we lost you, Lane, but your superb acting has conferred immortality enabling us to give our middle fingers to ALS.

I’ve just learned from imdb.com of Lane’s passing. What a wonderful actor! Living overseas, I’ve missed some of his work. His Nixon must surely be superb. But my favorite is his Senator Dick Dodge, in “The Distinguished Gentleman”. When Dodge’s wrongdoing is exposed in public, Lane masterfully manages to combine –- at the same time! -- the oily, genial grin of a politician with the frantic, desperate eyes of a politically doomed man…

But beyond his art, what a lovely man! His personal warmth glowed out of him; just seeing him imparted, to me, a sense of impish good nature and imperturbable strength. And I loved – by video, will still love -- to hear his mellow Tennessean tones. He was… will always be… so real.

Thank you, God, for letting us know him. And Lane… y’all take care now, heah?

My husband and I flew into Sioux Falls, SD to see my family and saw Mr. Smith in the airport getting his gun checked ~ it was pheasant season. Besides loving him in so many roles he played he now carried a special place in my "favorites" category because he knew the best is usually found in the un-flashy and down-to-earth things ~ much like his character. We have lost an American treasure. God bless you all ~ with my continuing prayers for comfort in his passing.

The first time I ever saw Lane was in Gideon's Trumpet. Being from Tallahassee it of course caught my attention and his portrayal of Fred Turner was spot on. I next saw him in Soggy Bottom USA and loved his "aw shucks" folksy attitude. My favorite will always be his episode in the Earth to the Moon mini-series. With him gone the only way now to hear that beautiful voice will be in the media choices he left us.

Lane was brilliant in a movie many years co-starring Linda Lavin where he had played a wealthy Houston area businessman who secretly wanted to divorce his wife. The family had about 12 children, moved to Australia. Linda in her role, later became a nun. This was based on a true story. That is how my wife and I remember Lane Smith. He'll be sadly missed by the movie industry.
