Lloyd Bentsen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 23, 2006.
HOUSTON - Lloyd Bentsen, a courtly Texan who represented the state in Congress for 28 years and served as President Clinton's first treasury secretary, died Tuesday morning, his family said. He was 85.

Bentsen, the Democratic vice presidential nominee 1988, died at his home in Houston, according to the family.

His distinguished political career took him from the humble beginnings of a county office in the Rio Grande Valley in the 1940s to six years in the U.S. House, 22 in the U.S. Senate and two in the Clinton Cabinet, where he was instrumental in directing the administration's economic policy.

Lan, I am just learning of your loss. I was so sorry to hear about your dad. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy. I have been living back in my hometown, Columbia, SC, for almost seven years. In case you don’t remember me, I dated Ken Johnson circa 1977. Hope you and yours are well.

For Lloyd...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

The late Sen. Bentsen's legacy continues
to be a challenge to all who wish to participate
in the political process from all geographic areas. His thoughtful consideration and depth were without measure. All the while with vision and style.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

It is with heartfelt sympathy that I send this greeting. Indeed, Senator Lloyd Bentsen was a Man of Character... In the Book of Ephesians, Paul the author, takes us to the mountain tops of Christian truth and invites each one of us to look at a breathtaking view. We see that it is Jesus who dominates that view. Sentator Bentsen allowed God to dominate his view. In doing so he lived a life of service to his Country,Mankind, State, Nation... Bentsen will greatly be missed...To his family thank you for sharing him and May God continue to bless each of you.

There's A Tree That's Good For Healing

I told a friend the other day I would soon be coming this way;

I told him this body was getting weak surely but slowly.

Sometimes

I would get up and sit back down but still I made it, round and round

Someone told me about a tree and just one leaf would heal me.

I

knew death was coming as a thief so I asked my friend to pull me a leaf;

Don't you worry and don’t you fret today. I have not one regret.

No more rocking from side to side I'm going where I'll be satisfied;

No more prescriptions to be filled this old body is already healed.

This shouldn't take you by surprise I told you I was going to paradise;

I said it wouldn't be very long you would look for me and I'll be gone.

I've fought a good fight between me and Good, it's alright;

I don't want you to be sad rejoice and be exceedingly glad.

I'm not suffering, I have no pain I'm going where there's more to gain;

I've finally made it to that tree, My Friend was waiting with a leaf for me.

To the Family of Lloyd Bentsen,

I recently heard of the death of Lloyd Bentsen and wanted to write to your family to express my deepest sympathies. During difficult times something that has brought me comfort is looking to Bible thoughts that entertain a hope for our loved ones.

One of the scriptures that has comforted my family is found at Isaiah 25:8-9, which states, "He will actually swallow up death forever and the Sovreign Lord Jehovah will certainly wipe the tears from all faces ... And in that day one will certainly say: "Look! This is our God. We have hoped in him, and he will save us. This is Jehovah. Let us be joyful and rejoice in the salvation by him."

I hope this may bring you comfort as it has for my family many times.

With Deepest Sympathy,

Melissa Valentine

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Senator Lloyd Bentsen was a gentleman who never lost touch with the common working person...a true Democrat at heart and practice. What impressed me most about him is that he led by example even in death. His obituary was listed in the paper along with every other person who passed away with him in the late days of May. He was equal to everyone in that sense although his death made headlines everywhere. My sympathies to the Bentsen family.

Voting for Senator Bentsen always made me feel like I had done something good. On Saturday, May 20, I was admiring a Dukakis/Bentsen Campaign Poster, one of many posters of the great ones; Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, etc., at the Harris County Democratic Party Headquarters. I was so saddened to hear of your loss just 3 days later. He was a GIANT of the Greatest Generation. They are almost all gone now, and we are so much the poorer for their passing. They have shown us the way and we must continue the journey with their example of integrity, honesty, equality, and civil rights to light the path before us.

It is difficult to put into words the sadness at hearing of Lloyd Bentsen's passing. I never met Mr. Bentsen personally, but as my Senator for most of my life, he was a stable guidance and a primary force behind shaping Texas into becoming the great state that it is. Although one might not have always agreed with his views, Mr. Bentsen was a man of honor you could trust and respect. He is truly one of the great men of history; albeit quietly, he had a great impact on all Americans. Although Mr. Bentsen is no longer with us in person, his quiet strength and stability will stand as a guiding force in the future through the "pavers" he laid through his service. The fact that Mr. Bentsen is so loved and respected by Texans and all Americans is a testament to the kind of man Mr. Bentsen was. May this be a comfort to his family and friends.

He was such a fine example for all of us and he will trully be missed. But he has now gone to a greater reward. God Bless him!!!

I am saddened by the loss of a great Texan.Senator Bentsen was an extraordinary man. Not only was he a giant in the Senate, where he was the consumate statesman, he was a capable Secretary of Treasury which helped to craft The 1993 Budget Resolution which put our nations fiscal house in order. Texas lost a giant, but in the years of his remarkable service to our nation, he made me proud to be a Texan and a Democrat. I worked on his Senate campaign in 1988, and when Governor Dukakis named him as his running mate, I worked for the national ticket. My only regret is that he never became President, because if he had served in that capacity, he would have been a giant in the office. May God bless you and your family at this time.

There are so many memories about Senator Bentsen, as well as Millie Bruner, of his staff in Dallas. Some of them involve our Democratic State Conventions over the years, and some involve the race with Bush and Quayle.

Senator Bentsen implemented economic policies that empowered the people who live here. We need more who think like that.

We will not forget Lloyd Bentsen.
