Michael DeBakey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 12, 2008.
HOUSTON (AP) - Dr. Michael DeBakey, the world-famous cardiovascular surgeon who pioneered such now-common procedures as bypass surgery and invented a host of devices to help heart patients, has died. He was 99.

DeBakey died Friday night at The Methodist Hospital in Houston from "natural causes," according to a statement issued early Saturday by Baylor College of Medicine and The Methodist Hospital.

DeBakey counted world leaders among his patients and helped turn Baylor from a provincial school into one of the nation's great medical institutions.

"Dr. DeBakey's reputation brought many people into this institution, and he treated them all: heads of state, entertainers, businessmen and presidents, as well as people with no titles and no means," said Ron Girotto, president of The Methodist Hospital System.

Girotto said the surgeon "has improved the human condition and touched the lives of generations to come."

"There is no question that he was one of the pioneers of cardiovascular surgery in the last half of the 20th century," Dr. Denton Cooley, president and surgeon-in-chief at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston and longtime DeBakey rival, said Saturday.

Cooley said one of DeBakey's greatest legacies is "that he influenced so many students to pursue careers in cardiovascular surgery."

While still in medical school in 1932, he invented the roller pump, which became the major component of the heart-lung machine, beginning the era of open-heart surgery. The machine takes over the function of the heart and lungs during surgery.

It was the start of a lifetime of innovation. The surgical procedures that DeBakey developed once were the wonders of the medical world. Today, they are commonplace procedures in most hospitals. He also was a pioneer in the effort to develop artificial hearts and heart pumps to assist patients waiting for transplants, and helped create more than 70 surgical instruments.

On Saturday, former colleagues and other medical professionals gathered at the still-uncompleted DeBakey Library on the Baylor College of Medicine to remember DeBakey as a "medical statesman" and perhaps the most prominent doctor in the world in the second half of the 20th century.

"He took risks that others might not take to advance medicine and to prove the value of the procedures," said Dr. Bobby R. Alford, chancellor of the Baylor College of Medicine. "He had impeccable judgment."

"Millions of people are alive today because of the prior work of Dr. DeBakey for the past 60 years," said Dr. Marc Boom, executive vice president of The Methodist Hospital.

In early 2006, at the age of 97, DeBakey underwent surgery for a damaged aorta — a procedure he had developed.

"It is a miracle. I really should not be here," DeBakey said in a rare interview published later that year in The New York Times.

Dr. William T. Butler, a colleague of DeBakey's at Baylor, said in March 2006 that DeBakey established himself with his surgical firsts as the "maestro of cardiovascular surgery."

"Dr. DeBakey was never afraid to challenge the status quo, often going against the tide," Butler said. "Some times his colleagues did not really accept his visionary ideas, particularly as he propelled beyond the boundaries of existing scientific dogma."

In a 1985 Associated Press interview, DeBakey said: "I'm accused of being a perfectionist and, in the way it's usually defined, I guess I am. In medicine, and certainly in surgery, you have to be as perfect as possible. There's no room for mistakes."

DeBakey was the first to perform replacement of arterial aneurysms and obstructive lesions in the mid-1950s. He later developed bypass pumps and connections to replace excised segments of diseased arteries.

A tireless worker and a stern taskmaster, DeBakey literally had scores of patients under his care at any one time. He performed more than 60,000 heart surgeries during his 70-year career, The Methodist Hospital said.

His patients ranged from penniless peasants to such famous figures as the Duke of Windsor, the Shah of Iran, King Hussein of Jordan, Turkish President Turgut Ozal, Nicaraguan Leader Violetta Chamorro and presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon.

But he said celebrities didn't get special treatment on the operating table: "Once you incise the skin, you find that they are all very similar."

In 1996, he flew to Moscow to help examine ailing Russian President Boris Yeltsin and served as a consultant when Yeltsin underwent surgery.

DeBakey served as chairman of the President's Commission on Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke during Johnson's administration and helped establish the National Library of Medicine. He was author of more than 1,000 medical reports, papers, chapters and books on surgery, medicine and related topics.

"I like my work, very much. I like it so much that I don't want to do anything else," DeBakey said.

In 1953, he performed the first Dacron graft to replace part of an occluded artery. In the 1960s, he began coronary arterial bypasses.

In 1962, DeBakey received a $2.5 million grant to work on an artificial heart that could be implanted without being linked to an exterior console. In 1966, he was the first to successfully use a partial artificial heart — a left ventricular bypass pump.

It was the first implantation of a complete artificial heart by Cooley in 1969 that led to the famous feud between the two surgeons that lasted until the two publicly made amends in 2007. The patient, Haskell Karp, 47, lived on the artificial heart for nearly five days, then received a heart transplant, but died 36 hours later.

Cooley was censured by the medical school and the National Heart Institute for using the experimental device, and he and DeBakey traded accusations. Cooley, who contended Karp was so ill he had no choice but to operate, left Baylor and established the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.

Meanwhile, the effort to save lives through heart transplants was stalled. Dr. Christiaan Bernard in South Africa had performed the first human heart transplant in history in late 1967. In the United States, DeBakey and Cooley were among those who began performing the transplants, but death rates were high because the recipients' bodies rejected the new organs.

The advent of a new anti-rejection drug, cyclosporine, gave new impetus to organ transplants in the 1980s. In 1984, DeBakey performed his first heart transplant in 14 years.

His work as an inventor continued. In the late 1990s, DeBakey brought out a ventricular assist device touted as one-tenth the size of current heart pumps that helped ease suffering for patients waiting for heart transplants.

In the late 1990s, he took an active role in creating the Michael E. DeBakey Heart Institute at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kan.

DeBakey was born Sept. 7, 1908, in Lake Charles, La., the son of Lebanese immigrants. He got interested in medicine while listening to physicians chat at his father's pharmacy.

"I always knew I wanted to be a doctor. I just didn't know what kind," DeBakey once said.

He received his bachelor's and medical degrees from Tulane University in New Orleans.

He recalled in 1999 that the time he finished medical school in 1932, "there was virtually nothing you could do for heart disease. If a patient came in with a heart attack, it was up to God."

DeBakey's first wife, Diana Cooper DeBakey, died of a heart attack in 1972. He is survived by his second wife, Katrin Fehlhaber, their daughter, and two of his four sons from his first marriage.

In 1971 after five heart attacks my 42-year-old father was sent home from KU Med Center in Kansas City with. I´m sorry there´s nothing we can do draw your Social Security until you die. in the line at the grocery store. My mother heard someone talking about Dr. DeBakey in Houston she called him the next day. He had her pick up all the test results and fly to Houston. He did open-heart surgery on my father and my dad lived for nine more years, he called personally my father every year to see how he was doing until his death. What an amazing gift God gave us in Dr. DeBakey. .
PS. There was no charge from my mom and dad, that insurance did not pay which. I´m sure was very little.
My 23 year old grandson is having heart issues and I´m asking for Dr. DeBakey`s intercession to find the right doctor to help him.

The beautiful comments of Becky Taylor on the kindness and gentle manner of Dr.Michael E DeBakey brought two events that I will never
forget While I was serving in the USAFR, I has a patient with a large abdominal aortic aneurysm who needed surgical intervention whom Dr.DeBakey accepted immediately for operation at Methodist Hospital. The patient retuned to me after the operation and he was grateful and full of praise for Dr.DeBakey for his kindness and gentle expert service.
The second event was that of an African American woman veteran who was destitute and required surgery for thorasic aortic aneurysm.
I was in Rochester NY . He accepted the patient immediately when I called him and the surgical operation done at Methodist with success and was free of charge.
Now explain to me who will do such surgical operation free of charge in this day and age when medicine has become a business.

Respectfully,
Dr.Munir E Nassar

It's way-late that I am adding this message, but I had chills learning about Dr. Debakey and actually a tear in my eye as I write. My life may one day be saved because of him. My son just completed his 1st year med sch at Parkland, himself a stellar young example, taking MCAT 1st time out of HS, was rated top 1/2 of 1% of the nation. Amazing how much this man did for everyone, equally, without reservation and without pomp & circumstance.

Dr Michael E DeBakey was and is a living legend, exemplifying excellence in patient health care from both a scientific and humanitarian unequaled qualities. His scientific discoveries and achievements in cardiovascular medicine to this day are difficult to follow or emulate.
The world community, the medical schools, the students and various research institutions have lost a great physician, and cardiovascular surgeon, for many years to come. He will always be remembered because legends like Dr DeBackey lives on.
My heartfelt condolences to his wife and
children Michael and Denis an grand children, and to Lois and Selma DeBackey.

I did not know Dr. DeBakey, and am glad that he lived a very long and productive life doing what he loved. Dr. DeBakey performed open heart surgery on my grandfather in May of 1965. My grandparents who were also Arabic traveled from California to Texas to take a chance with this new surgery avaable. Unfortunately the surgery was not a success for my grandfather, he only lived a couple of days after it. He died on my 1st birthday. I always get proud that he traveled so far to meet Dr. DeBakey to have this surgery. In a way he was helping with research. I would love to speak with his son Michael and find out if Michael Sr. Ever spoke of my grandfather. His name was Kamel Shaheen.

For Michael...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Thank you Houston Chronicle for a wonderful history lesson on the life of Dr. DeBakey. Truly remarkable. Thanks to his wonderful parents that set the foundation for this great man. Will we ever have another Dr. DeBakey? With the compassion and respect he had for his fellow man??? I hope so. I am very sad that he is gone but he has gone to a great reward in heaven. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and co-workers of Dr. DeBakey. My dad was the first person to have two heart valves replaced by Dr. Debakey in the fall of 1964. The valves were plastic balls surrounded by stainless steel cages. This new procedure gave Daddy nine more years of life. For that, I'm so grateful. Dr. DeBakey's contributions to medical science will benefit millions of patients for years to come. He will be missed.

I was sadden to hear of Dr. DeBakeys death. He entered our lives when the Indiana doctors gave my husband no hope for living. We contacted and was welcomed by Baylor College & Dr. DeBakeys staff after just a phone call. He gave my husband 3 bypasses and extended his life for 7 years. At his death the autopsy showed the beautiful gifted work of this skilled man was working without a miss. Natural causes was the cause of deteriation. OUr family was blessed by this man, given a gift way above the $200 he charged in 1974. God has a special place for the service he gave others while on earth. He truly was gifted and followed Gods lead. We thank the family for sharing him with us, may your grief be short spaned.

I remember as a teenager in high school working part-time at Methodist Hospital, experiencing the most indescribable feeling that I had ever had. It was like I was in the presence of royalty. I had always heard of the pioneering things he had done in medicine. I would pass by the bust the hospital had displayed of him, but to actually get a glimpse of the great Dr DeBakey gave me butterflies! He had on the coolest surgical boots I had ever seen. Come to think of it, that was the first and only time I had ever saw such a thing! He was the epitome of the word surgeon, only a couple can even come close to what he has done in Heart medicine. Dr DeBakey has put Houston on the map of the world. He lived his life to the fullest and will be greatly rewarded for all of his very hard work by the most high. May he Rest in Peace. I offer the prayer of thanksgiving for the life of Dr. Michael E. DeBakey. Growing up in Lake Charles, LA. in the early 60s, I often heard of his many advances in the frontier of Cardio Medicine and Surgery. Rest in peace thou good and faithful servant.

Dr. Michael DeBakey and Family:

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May God Bless You! Dr. DeBakey is a wonderful heart surgeon and I know that my father-in-law knows Dr. DeBakey very well. My father-in-law's name is Dr. John Harold White and his wife's name is Joyce Ann Boston-White. He had served on the Harris County Medical Society Board of Ethics for a lot of years. He has been an Anethesiologist at the VA Hospital and at Bayshore Medical Center and at the Pasadena General Hospital in Pasadena, TX for a very long time.

My father-in-law and mother-in-law used to live in Pasadena, TX. They have moved to Waynesboro, VA.

My father-in-law also was an Army physician in WWI or WWII. He said that Dr. DeBakey is a wonderful heart surgeon.

Thank you for being an inspiration to everyone and Thank You for repairing everyone's heart.

My mother passed away four and a half years ago due to Severe Congestive Heart Failure. My mother had always said that Dr. DeBakey is a wonderful heart surgeon and He is everyone's favorite heart surgeon. She also said that Dr. DeBakey is everyone's heart surgeon. He had always advised all of his interns and patients. Dr. DeBakey is talking to everyone in Heaven. There will always be "Angels Among Us!"

I am thankful, because if not for you my son may not be here on this earth. you are such a blessing that there is not a correct word in the english to describe our gratitude to you. To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

There was not a day that I came to work, that I did not recognize how blessed and honored I was to work for this OUTSTANDING physician - never did I take my job forgranted. Thank you Dr. DeBakey for your example of what patient care is about, for always being so willing to teach. There will never be another you, you will be missed by millions. May you rest in peace.

All of us who are patients of the Veterans' Administration are, in effect, patients of Dr DeBakey. He was a major leader in developing health-care for those of us who served this great country, and I truly believe that if not for him, I wouldn't be alive today. He will always hold a special place in my heart.
May God grant him rest and peace, and may light-perpetual shine upon him.

I remember ten years ago visiting my late cousin who was a patient at The Methodist Hospital in Houston. During my visit there I learned that despite his being 90 years old, Dr. DeBakey continued seeing patients on a 7 day a week basis. Legend had it that nobody in the hospital had the nerve to suggest that he retire.
