Pinetop Perkins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 21, 2011.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Pinetop Perkins, one of the last old-school bluesmen who played with Muddy Waters and became the oldest Grammy winner this year, died Monday at his home of cardiac arrest. He was 97.

Perkins was having chest pains when he went to take a nap and paramedics could not revive him, said Hugh Southard, Perkins' agent for the last 15 years.

The piano man played with an aggressive style and sang with a distinctive gravelly voice.

B.B. King said in an emailed statement that he was saddened by the loss of his friend.

"He was one of the last great Mississippi Bluesmen," King said. "He had such a distinctive voice, and he sure could play the piano. He will be missed not only by me, but by lovers of music all over the world".

Perkins accompanied Sonny Boy Williamson on the popular King Biscuit Time radio show broadcast on KFFA in Helena, Ark., in the 1940s. He toured with Ike Turner in the 1950s and joined Waters' band in 1969.

"He is the blues, he is the epitome of it," Southard said. "He lived it, breathed it."

Perkins won a Grammy in February for best traditional blues album for "Joined at the Hip: Pinetop Perkins & Willie "Big Eyes" Smith." That win made Perkins the oldest Grammy winner, edging out late comedian George Burns, who was 95 when he won in the spoken category for "Gracie: A Love Story" in 1990.

"We knew he lived a good life. What can you say about the man? He left here in his sleep. That's the way I want to go," said Smith, who lives in Chicago.

Perkins also won a 2007 Grammy for best traditional blues album for his collaboration on the "Last of the Great Mississippi Delta Bluesmen: Live in Dallas." He also received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 2005.

Even at his age, he was a regular fixture at Austin blues clubs, playing regular gigs up to last month. He had more than 20 performances booked this year, Southard said. After they won the Grammy this year, Smith and Perkins discussed recording another CD.

Perkins was born in Belzoni, Miss., in 1913 and was believed to be the oldest of the old-time Delta blues musicians still performing.

In an 80-year career, he played at juke joints, nightclubs and festivals. He didn't start recording in his own name until he was in his 70s and released more than 15 solo records since 1992.

That drive to keep playing the blues is what kept him alive, Southard said.

Smith said Perkins once told him he was happiest when he was playing music.

Perkins also loved fast food and was a smoker until the day he died.

"Two cheeseburgers, apple pie, a cigarette and a pretty girl was all he wanted," Southard said.

Perkins, who had no survivors, will be buried in his hometown, Southard said, but details were not immediately available. An Austin tribute to honor his life and music will be scheduled within the next week, Southard said.

Perkins moved to Austin in 2004 to live with an associate since he had no family.

Pine now has the company of Hubert Sumlin and Willie Big Eyes Smith. He played a whole lotta gigs with Willie, including while they were in Muddy Water's Band. And as elders, they traveled and were inseparable. Very close friends, Willie and Pine. And of course both were close to Hubert. And so many loved Pine.
Pine was given an artistic award from Pres.Clinton. I was lucky to travel with Pine to D.C. for the event and a performance of many artists. He was a show stealer!
Pine lived a great part of his life in Chicago. I met him when he was briefly in LaPorte. "Double Bubble" took good care of Pine, she has a heart of gold.
We always had to stop for 'little' Mc-D burgers, whether going to a gig at Rosa's in Chicago, or before the awards in D.C.! Yes lookin for a McD's near the capitol building..amongst some pretty fancy restaurants.. He loved my old 70 Coupe- I woulda paid HIM for the honor, to take him to gigs. However he insisted on payin for the gas..
A sweet, loving, good natured man, never saw him get mad. And he did stop playing at midnite, when the Sabbath was the next day. His Momma taught him not to play on Sunday and he never would. Rosa tried to push him, he was undeniable in his faith.
He often told me, 'I love the ladies, my mother was one, you know.' He was fun to just sit with, so many know that. He liked to go fishin when he had the time. No matter if they were not bitin.
We all love you, we all still do Pine.

Pinetop called Barry Nowlin Redberry and himself Blackberry, a clever play on the blackberry phone. His Redberry belonged to the University Area Rotary Club in Austin and he often brought Pinetop to Rotary. It was not long before Pinetop was voted an honorary member of the Rotary Club. We seldom had a piano around but at the installation of new officers at member Penny's home, Pinetop spied the piano and sat himself down to play. Here is a picture of Pinetop at Penny's piano.

I have been blessed to have shared many lovely conversations with Pinetop and I will miss him deeply. He was the sweetest Southern gentleman I ever met. The first time I saw him at his Homecoming at Hopson after the Biscuit, I asked if he was going to play with the rest of the musicians who came to honor him. He said he wouldn't be playing because he promised his mother that he would "never play on the Sabbath." He told me all about the old days when he worked on the plantation (until they killed his dog) and about how he once played guitar (until he got knifed by a woman!) He lived the life of a blues man and was a living legend.
I am so disappointed and sad that I will never see his smiling face again. He's gone on to tickle the boogie woogie ivories in that Heavenly All Star Blues Band with Otis, Muddy, Robert, Big Jack and so many others; he always sang like an angel. Thumbs up to you, Pinetop, and thanks for giving me the blues!

Pinetop was just about the sweetest guy you'd ever want to meet, and an inspiration to all who knew him. I will never think of him without seeing him smiling. He brought joy to so many, for so long...both through his music and also his unique personality. He will be sorely missed; yet how grateful we are that he gave us so many long and illustrious years of his talent and his time.

Like many here, I've been spoiled. And blessed. It was Pinetop who introduced me to the blues at the 1993 King Biscuit in Helena. He was a mere lad of 80 then, who had been performing since the late '20's. Man was I hooked, on both Pinetop and the blues. Saw him several times afterwards, each performance an incredible treat. I've yet to hear a blues piano player who can hold a candle to Pinetop. Some may be faster or more technically proficient or have more showmanship, but no one comes close to duplicating his authenticity, or his unique style and feel. Pinetop oozed the blues with a sense of real-life that cannot be found today. And his palpable love of life and people came right through those bony fingers into them keys. You've added to my life immeasurably, I could never thank you enough - God bless you Pinetop.

I saw the "Him" performing for just a few seconds on TV and felt the Blues, I´m taking lessons from one of his close friend in Iceland a Mr Halldor Bragason who played with him on his album. I love the Blues and love to steady it with Mr Bragason in Iceland.

March 28, 2011

We were delighted to first meet Pinetop Perkins at Antone's years ago and have enjoyed his music ever since. We extend condolences to family and friends. The music of Pinetop will live on in the form of his own recordings and played by other musicians who will do credit to his name each time they play.
The bond between Pinetop Perkins and Clifford Antone - made when Antone rediscovered Pinetop and brought him to Austin to share in the world of music that is here - that bond goes on for all time.
Thank you so much Pinetop Perkins for helping us to rediscover our love for the blues. And - on behalf of all - a love for life and for living it to the fullest - among friends and family.

I remember the first time I saw Pinetop, I was out at a club here in Chicago, and I walked around a corner, and almost ran right into him. I said"excuse me, Pinetop", he said" Oh, you know who I am, hmm? I said "of course, how could I not?....he said,"okay, now that's not fair, I don't know who you are, but we could fix that" Always slick, that was in 1997, and that was the first time I heard him play live. from then on, I ran into him on a regular basis. He was one of a kind, a real character, he will be so dearly missed.

Dearest Pinetop,

Thank you dear old friend, for all you taught me, for your kindness to me and my children many years ago, when I was a newly widowed young mother of 4 and an aspiring blues artist.

I know that my father, Pinetop, Muddy and all the other blues legends' spirits whom have passed on, will be watching with smiles and jamming right along with everyone at your Celebration of Life Jams, from beyond the veil and heaven's window to our world.

Rest in peace, dear old friend. My heart and spirit will be with everyone at these services, in honor of you, even though I am unable to physically attend.

I extend my sincerest condolences to
your manager Pat, your family, band members and other friends.

We all wish we could pass on as peacefully as you did, with the longevity you had and die the King in the blues world which you are.

You are and will always remain a King among blues artists, and a legend in the hearts of those of us who were fortunate enough to know you and play with you.

You will never be forgotten. May your legacy live long. You were a true living legend and one of the kindest I have ever known in the music industry.

With Love and Gratitude,

Teressa "BluesBabe" Brewer

I was sad and upset over losing my husband one day until i went to a little bar in La Porte and watched a man play his piano on his 92 birthday about a foot away from me. For most the night he played and sang to me(with his big brown eyes looking at me) even tho many were oblivious to what a talent he was. He gave me inspiration and made me smile that night. I now am singing the blues in Hammond Indiana, trying to make others smile as he did for me. Thanks Pinetop you gave me courage to start singing again..and I am knowing that you are liking it better in heavan even tho you also liked it down here!

Another blues legend has left us. I will always cherish the times I have seen Pinetop play his piano. I was lucky enough to meet him years ago at Antone's Record Store. R.I.P. Mr. Perkins.
