Robert Cade Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 27, 2007.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Dr. Robert Cade, who invented the sports drink Gatorade and launched a multibillion-dollar industry that the beverage continues to dominate, died Tuesday of kidney failure. He was 80.

His death was announced by the University of Florida, where he and other researchers created Gatorade in 1965 to help the school's football players replace carbohydrates and electrolytes lost through sweat while playing in swamp-like heat.

Now sold in 80 countries in dozens of flavors, Gatorade was born thanks to a question from former Gator Coach Dwayne Douglas, Cade said in a 2005 interview with The Associated Press.

He asked, "Doctor, why don't football players wee-wee after a game?"

"That question changed our lives," Cade said.

Cade's researchers determined a football player could lose up to 18 pounds - 90 to 95 percent of it water - during the three hours it takes to play a game. Players sweated away sodium and chloride and lost plasma volume and blood volume.

Using their research, and about $43 in supplies, they concocted a brew for players to drink while playing football. The first batch was not exactly a hit.

"It sort of tasted like toilet bowl cleaner," said Dana Shires, one of the researchers.

"I guzzled it and I vomited," Cade said.

The researchers added some sugar and some lemon juice to improve the taste. It was first tested on freshmen because Coach Ray Graves didn't want to hurt the varsity team. Eventually, however, the use of the sports beverage spread to the Gators, who enjoyed a winning record and were known as a "second-half team" by outlasting opponents.

After the Gators beat Georgia Tech 27-12 in the Orange Bowl in 1967, Tech coach Bobby Dodd told reporters his team lost because, "We didn't have Gatorade ... that made the difference."

Stokely-Van Camp obtained the licensing rights for Gatorade and began marketing it as the "beverage of champions." PepsiCo Inc. now owns the brand, which has brought the university more than $110 million in royalties since 1973.

Cade said Stokely-Van Camp hated the name "Gatorade," believing it would was too parochial, but stuck with it after tests showed consumers liked the name.

Gatorade held 80 percent of the $5.5 billion-a-year sports drink market in 2005, according to Beverage Digest. Current figures were not immediately available.

Cade said he thought the use of Gatorade would be limited to sports teams and never dreamed it would be purchased by regular consumers.

"I never thought about the commercial market," he said. "The financial success of this stuff really surprised us."

The researcher also said he was proud that Gatorade was based on research into what the body loses in exercise. "The other sports drinks were created by marketing companies," he said.

Since its introduction, Cade said the formula changed very little. An artificial sweetener has replaced sugar.

Instead of the original four flavors, there are now more than 30 available in the United States and more than 50 flavors available internationally.

Born James Robert Cade in San Antonio on Sept. 26, 1927, Cade, a Navy veteran, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

Cade was appointed an assistant professor in internal medicine at UF in 1961. He worked until he was 76, retiring in November 2004 from the university, where he taught medicine, saw patients and conducted research.

Cade and his wife, Mary, had six children.

Dear Mary,
What can I say that has not already been expressed by so many people who were inspired by your husband.
The Florida Track Club Junior Champ family know that Dr. Cade and yourself support the love of children and the desire to make a difference in healthy lifestyles through track and running related activities.
All we can do is to support you during this time and continue to let you know that we care and pray for your well being at the loss of one that is so loved by many.
Fondly,

Dear Mrs. Cade, Emily, and family,
I would like to express my sympathy to you all at this sad time. Emily and I were roommates at the Lutheran Chapel at FSU and I always enjoyed her stories about her wonderful, loving family. I feel fortunate to have met you all and regret having lost touch with Emily over the years (and I would love to reconnect). God Bless you all. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Mrs. Cade, Emily, and family,
I was one of Emily's roommates at FSU and had the pleasure of visiting your home once and seeing some of the famed Studebakers. So sorry to hear of Dr. Cade's passing. He really made an impact. My sympathies go out to all of you. Emily, I hope you are doing well.

Dear Mrs.Cade,Martha,and family,
I was so sorry to hear the news of Dr.Cade. My memories include Gatorade tasting, being amazed at all those Studebakers, and just having lots of fun whenever I was at your house. Of course back then I didn't really know what all Dr.Cade did except for being the only dad I knew that was an inventor,(how cool that was!)and that he worked with schizophrenia patients. It was not until I read the recent articles about him that I realised what an incredible person he was,and how he touched so many lives in so many ways.
I hope that soon fond memories will soften the sorrow you all feel now...we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
With love,

Dear Mrs. Cade, Phoebe, Emily, Celia, Martha, Michael and Stephen
What a brilliant mind, mentor and a devoted husband. God Almighty gifted Dr. Robert Cade for witty invention. Dr. Cade is in heaven now and continue to work in heaven called Creation Lab. I will continue to pray for the loved ones who Dr. Cade left behind. Dr. Cade work here on earth is done. God bless you all.

We knew Dr. Cade through the Studebaker Drivers Club and were so impressed with his wonderful relationships with Stephen, Martha and grandchildren. A stranger who first met him would never guess that he was a famous inventor and so prominent in the medical world because of his down to earth and just plain folk demeanor. Among our greatest pleasures are visits to Stephen and Dr. Cade's place and admiring the magnificent collection of Studebakers. Dr. Cade was one of a vanishing breed, a true gentleman and will be sorely missed by the Studebaker community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Cade and the family.

Dear Mrs. Cade, Phoebe, Emily, Celia, Martha, Michael and Stephen. My thoughts are with all of you as you go through this difficult time. I have been telling stories to my kids of life at the Cades when we were growing up. Dr. Cade working on his Studebakers on the weekends, taking us for rides in the Hoppin' Gator buggy, going up to the Minute Market for candy. I know you must be proud of him - he touched so many lives in a positve way. Sincerely,

Mrs. Cade, Michael, Martha, Celia, Stephen, Emily, and Phoebe:

The entire Glenn family was sorry to hear the news of Dr. Cade. We began to reminisce of the wonderful times we shared with you all during our three years in Gainesville during the late 60's. We will never forget the numerous experiments that Dr. Cade was always conducting; or the impromptu trips he would make to the "icee store" with most of the neighborhood kids in tow. Our thoughts are with you.

Warmest regards,
Linda

Mrs. Cade, Martha and family,
My memories of growing up always include fond memories of "hanging out" at your house. Mrs. Cade, you and Dr. Cade always made us feel welcome and comfortable! It was so much fun to be in your home, there was always something going on, no matter what time of day or night!
Just last year, when I had my first grade students do reports on famous inventions, imagine my surprise when one of my young students came to school and reported on the invention of Gator-aide. Imagine the children's surprise when I told them that I had grown up with the daughter of the inventor of Gator-aide and knew Dr.Cade. The children looked at me as if I was a dinosaur! I have never thought of myself as growing up with history, but my students proved me wrong. It has been so heartwarming reading the guest book. Dr. Cade has had such an impact on so many people. I know that you have such a deep sense of loss, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Cade family. We were very fortunate to be next door neighbors for several years. We remember all the kids from the two families enjoying the swimming pool. Helen recalled that Bob came over a few times to ask her to try his formula. Once after she did the test he asked her to let him know if she had diarriah. Helen, Geri, Janet, Linda and Kathryn join me in sending condolances. John Glenn.

I first met the Cade family in Portland Oregon in the early 1990's at the International Studebaker Meet. Over the years we met at many other Studebaker Meets and in 1996 at the Queen Mary Meet I mentioned to his daughter Martha that my youngest son wanted to meet her dad, Dr. Cade. As it turned out Dr. Cade took my son Michael and his friend Matt to dinner that evening on the Queen Mary and told them the story of how he invented Gatorade. What a special person he was to give so generously of his time. My son will always have that special memory and often tells his friends of that special day. My heart and prayers go out to his family at this time. Dr. Cade was truly a special person.

It was an honor to work with your loved one.

I had the privilege of working with Dr Cade and PA Malcolm Privette at UF during the mid 80's. A true gentleman, scholar, mentor who always was willing to give his time and energy to help everyone he came in contact with. God blessed us with his presence and now has him in his realm. My condolences and prayers to the Cade family for their profound loss.

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Cade and her family. I was fortunate to be a patient of Dr. Cade's from 1971 to 1975. I remember his determination to help me, which he did (probably the reason I'm alive today). But most of all, I remember his gentleness to me -- "My dear Gail," he called me -- wry sense of humor and complete kindness to everyone. I've always told my husband, "If I ever get to write 'My Most Unforgettable Character' for Reader's Digest, it would be Dr. Cade." I used to say that, if Dr. Cade's life was adapted into a movie, he would be played by Truman Capote." But an optimistic Truman Capote! Dr. Cade believed anything could be done. Then he just went out and did it!

Like many other graduate students I had the pleasure and honor of working for Dr. Cade in the Physiology lab at UF. Dr. Cade was THE best story teller ever. When Dr. Cade was in the lab it was better than if Santa Claus himself were present. Dr. Cade had the ability to tell a story and paint such a vivid picture with words that you felt as if you were there yourself. It was great to hear him tell the stories of inventing Gatorade, Hopping Gator, and the illustrious mouse trap that he was forced to invent when the lab above his had a problem keeping their lab subjects contained. It seemed the multitudes of pesky lab rodents kept finding their way into his lab and chewing holes in the tubing of his experiments. Dr. Cade was the most humble and brilliant person I have ever met. Dr. Cade influenced countless of students and he will be sorely missed and never forgotten. My deepest condolences to Dr. Cade's family.

DEAR AUNT MARY AND BEAUTIFUL FAMILY, ONE OF MY FONDEST MEMORIES GROWING UP WAS MEETING UNCLE BOB FOR THE FIRST TIME AND THEN KNOWING HIM ALL THESE YEARS. WHEN I MET HIM I WAS 8 YEARS OLD. I THOUGHT HE WAS TERRIFIC. HE WAS THE PERFECT MAN FOR MY BEAUTIFUL AUNT MARY; HE WAS A DOCTOR , SHE WAS A NURSE , HE PLAYED THE VIOLIN AND SHE PLAYED THE PIANO. IT WAS ALL SO GLORIOUS! I DID THINK HE LOOKED LIKE MR. PEEPERS ON TELEVISION, MIND YOU THIS WAS 1951. THEN THE NEXT PART OF A DREAM CAME TRUE I WAS A JUNIOR BRIDESMAID IN THEIR WEDDING AT MY GRANDPARENTS STRASBURGER'S HOME IN DALLAS. WHAT A TRAIN TRIP WE HAD WITH AUNT MARY ON THE KATY TO GET THERE FOR THE WEDDING . AFTER THE HONEYMOON I CAN STILL TASTE THE DELICIOUS BREAKFAST THAT AUNT MARY AND UNCLE BOB SERVED US IN THEIR FIRST HOME IN DALLAS. IT WAS SPECTACULAR, BLUEBERRY PANCAKES AND EVERY IMAGINABLE DELIGHT. SO MUCH HAPPENED IN THEIR LIVES AFTER THAT STORYBOOK BEGINNING AND IT WAS FAR FROM DULL. NOW IT ENDS AND I WILL MISS HIM , I KNOW HE IS HAPPILY IN HEAVEN WITH GOD AND HIS BELOVED PARENTS. WHAT A WONDERFUL LIFE HE HAD AND HE ADDED WONDER TO MY LIFE. LOVE TO ALL, NEICE SHARON

Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Cade, he made an immeasurable difference in the lives of my son with autism and our whole family. The testing and advice I received from Dr. Cade and his staff in 1996 improved our lives and I will be forever grateful.

Dr. Cade more than treated me for nearly dying from kidney problems, he also taught me to love the studebakers I grew up with, listen to him play the violin, share jokes, and the value of laughter to help me get will. He and his family have been an intricate part of my family's life, even to my daughter Katielaine Islam having been the recepient of one of his scholarships, which was used to get her RN. Since graduation she has worked the ICU unit at Shands while he was hospitalized there. I will always remember him as the ultimate gentleman and a gentle man

Our Deepest sympathy Mary to you all of your family. Mr Cade was our proudest conversation we had with everyone we know. Knowing Ms.Cade bobbies mother was a blessing and living next to her all those years was a blessing because she educated us with all of bobbies knowledge and inventions he was truly loved by his mother and she made us proud to know that bobby was so close to us and part our life through her. I have followed his career and inventions and have passed on the knowledge and awareness of Robert Cade to my children that this great man lived to care for the world and make peoples lives better. His gentle spirit and soft voice, just like his mothers was so big that the whole world could hear him and learn and grow with him. He is a True Heroe made with a heart gold. Our Love and Prayers are with always. [email protected]

I was one of the first batch of Gator athletes to benefit from Dr. Cade's brillance. Playing basketball for the Gators in the 60's placed me as one of the many test subjects of his new drink. Man did that stuff work. It didn't taste very good but it brought outstanding results.
The few times that I did have the good fortune to talk with Dr. Cade were real treats. His intelligence and uniqueness as a human being will never be forgotten.

Dearest Mary and family,

I cannot begin to tell you how saddened I was by the news I found on the internet yesterday afternoon that Bob had died. I am grateful for every moment that I was privileged to spend with him. It is with a heavy heart I write this. My deepest condolences to Mary Cade and family. Dr. Cade tocuhed so many peoples lives in so many ways.
