Robin Roberts Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 6, 2010.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Robin Roberts, the Hall of Fame pitcher who led the Philadelphia Phillies to the 1950 National League pennant as part of the famed "Whiz Kids," has died. He was 83.

Roberts died Thursday morning at his Temple Terrace, Fla., home of natural causes, the Phillies announced, citing Roberts' son Jim.

The right-hander was the most productive pitcher in the National League in the first half of the 1950s, topping the league in wins from 1952 to 1955, innings pitched from '51 to '55 and complete games from '52 to '56.

He won 286 games and put together six consecutive 20-win seasons. Roberts had 45 career shutouts, 2,357 strikeouts and a lifetime ERA of 3.41. He pitched 305 complete games, but also holds the dubious distinction of giving up more home runs than any other Major League pitcher.

"Workhorse is a weak description," Philadelphia Daily News writer Stan Hochman wrote about Roberts in 2003. "He was a mule, stubborn, ca ntankerous and willing to toil from sunup to sundown."

Phillies fans will remember Roberts as the leading pitcher on the 1950 squad that won the franchise's first pennant in 35 years. Roberts put together a 20-11 season with a 3.02 ERA and five shutouts.

The team, with several 25-and-younger stars such as Roberts, Richie Ashburn and Del Ennis, was dubbed the "Whiz Kids." It marked the end a three-decade span in which the Phillies were mostly awful.

The Phillies held a 7½ game lead with 11 games to go, but struggled to hang on as injuries - especially to the pitching staff - took their toll. On the final day of the season and just after his 24th birthday, Roberts made his third start in five days and pitched the Phillies to a 4-1 win over the Brooklyn Dodgers to clinch the pennant.

Roberts started Game 2 of the World Series against the Yankees and held New York to one run on nine hits through nine innings. With the game tied 1-1 in the top the 10th, Joe DiMaggio led off with a solo home run to left field, giving New York a 2-1 win.

The Yankees would go on to sweep Philadelphia. Roberts, who pitched in relief in Game 4, finished the series with a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings.

Roberts spent 14 of his 19 seasons in Philadelphia and was the stalwart of their rotation from 1948 to 1961. His 234 wins as a Phillie are even more impressive considering the team was lost more games than it won in that stretch. His best statistical season came in 1952, when he went 28-7 with a 2.59 ERA.

He signed as a free agent with the Baltimore Orioles and spent 1962-64 there before winding down his career with the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs.

Roberts had a reputation as a control pitcher who relied heavily on his fastball and who threw strikes, sometimes to his detriment. He gave up only 1.3 walks per game over his career, but also gave up at least 40 home runs in three straight seasons.

"I had a high fastball and I eit her overpowered them or they overpowered me," he once said.

Roberts started five All-Star games and was named to the team seven times. His best years came before the Cy Young Award, but Roberts twice was chosen pitcher of the year by The Sporting News. He also was the publication's player of the year in 1952.

The Phillies retired his jersey, No. 36, in 1962. He remains the franchise's career leader in games pitched, complete games and innings pitched. He was the leader in wins and strikeouts until Steve Carlton eclipsed those marks.

Long after his career ended, Roberts followed the Phillies closely and was still popular in Philadelphia, drawing boisterous applause from fans each time he came back. A statue of him sits outside the first base gate at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.

Robin Evan Roberts was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Springfield, Ill. His parents, Tom and Sarah, had moved to centra l Illinois from Wales in 1921. His father was a coal miner and Roberts grew up listening to the Chicago Cubs games on the radio.

Roberts played baseball, basketball and football at Lanphier High School in Springfield and later went to Michigan State, where he was a star on both the basketball and baseball teams.

During the summers of 1946 and 1947, Roberts pitched in the semi-professional Northern League for Montpelier, Vt. He signed with the Phillies for $25,000 following graduation from Michigan State in 1947. He spent little time in the Phillies' farm system before being called up.

After retiring from baseball, Roberts was a stockbroker and served as baseball coach at the University of South Florida.

Best-selling author James A. Michener, who lived outside Philadelphia, once summed up Roberts' career in The New York Times.

"For two generations of fans, he symbolized the best in athletic competition," Michener wrote. "Day after day he went out there and threw that high, hard one down the middle, a marvelously coordinated man doing his job. If he had pitched for the Yankees he might have won 350 games."

Roberts is survived by four sons, one brother, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson, the Phillies said. His wife, Mary, died five years ago, the team said.

I know that, at this terrible time, it seems like the light has gone from your world. Remember, though, that God promises that "joy commeth in the morning." This long night of tragedy will pass - the whole country is praying for you.

I spent summers on our farm on the Delaware River in northwest New Jersey and we had a little black and white TV. I could turn the TV antenna, which was attached to a tree, to the south and pick up the Phillies games, a good relief from only watching Yankees games. I particularly enjoyed watching Robin Roberts pitch, (and always hoped the Phllies would bat out, so he could take the mound again). His concentration and resolve somehow could be detected through the scratchy images on the little screen to the 9-year-old watching, and of course his habit of touching the top of his shoe before every pitch.

Growing up in Philadelphia in the 50s and 60s, Robin Roberts was my favorite player. I was disappointed when he was traded. In the early '60s I wrote to him and asked for his autograph; he sent me a signed photo. I have remained a fan all of my life. RIP.

I have followed Robin's career from the time I could turn on the radio! He was a true professional in every sense of the word. A GREAT pitcher and a wonderful human being. I had the opportunity to fulfill a dream many years ago, when he signed a baseball for me. It will be forever a treasure to me. I almost named my first son after him. He will be missed. My sympathies to the family and they should know his legacy will live on and on and on! God Bless,

I won a write-in contest from WIP in 1956 when I was 11 years old. I won the opportunity to be the Phillies' Bat Boy for opening night with the Giants at Connie Mack Stadium. My favorite player and my mom's favorite was Robin Roberts. Robbie was to pitch to me at home plate in pre-game ceremonies, and I truly looked forward to that night. My dad pitched to me in the backyard, so I at least would have a chance to make contact with the ball. My 11 year old heart was broken however, because it was so cold that night, they cancelled the ceremonies. I was lucky enough, though, to have a professional photo taken of me handing Robbie bats at the top of the dugout steps. I cherish that photo to this day and always will. He was an astounding pitcher, and a great man. He always went into a game wanting to finish it. And I know the thought of handing the ball over to a relief pitcher after five never entered his mind. He was also a gentleman, prefering to give up a home run rather than "throw at" a player. His statistics say it all, and had he played for a more competitive team than the Phils were during a good part of his career, his stats would be unbelievable. I'll always remember the short time that I was able to spend with him, and how lucky this 11 year old was. I was very sorry to hear of this great man's passing, and my condolences to his family members.

In 1960, when I was 11 years old, my dad took me to a church hall (in the Germantown area, I believe) where Mr. Roberts was speaking and taking questions from the audience. I couldn't believe that my favorite player would actually answer one of my questions, speak to me personally when the event ended, and sign a baseball that I had found in the Phillies dugout after a game! It was a moment that, 50 years later, has never been forgotten. That signed ball still sits proudly on the shelf of my study--one of the prized possessions of my life. I send my sincere sympathies to the Roberts Family. In a good way, he touched the lives of many.

Robin was the best. After he left the game he was a great autograph signer who worked with the BAT organization. No autographer minded donating $10.00 for his signature. I will miss him, but his history will live on for many generations.

In the late '40's and 50's, I spent twelve summers on my grandparents' farm in northeast Missouri. I listened to the Cardinals' broadcast on KMOX radio. I loved to hear Harry Carey describe the battles between Robby and Stan Musial(naturally my hero). Robin struck out Stan the Man many times, and Stan hit a bunch of homers off Robin. They were both giants as baseball players and as men of character and grace; there are no equals to them today.
My thoughts and prayers to the Roberts family. He was a gift to us all.

A Truly Great Man and Pitcher. Many years ago as a high school pitcher I worked out with the O's while Robby was pitching there. It was a chilling September day and all I had was a T-shirt to wear under my uniform when Mr. Roberts came over gave a nice wool long sleeve sweatshit with his name across the top. He was so nice to a kid who was scare to death. He & Brooks were cut from the same mold. Class people . God Bless

The Roberts family has my deepest sympathy. As a youngster growing up in the Philadelphia suburbs, I had the pleasure of seeing Robbie pitch in old Connie Mack Stadium, listening to games on the radio and watching on TV every chance I could. I will never forget the four starts (three complete games) in nine days to end the 1950 season and Game 2 of the Series and a 17-inning complete game. He was my hero. Today's major leaguers owe him a debt of gratitude to his work on and off the field. All baseball will miss No. 36

Connie Mack Stadium. Robin Roberts as a batter. The right center field was 360 feet away. The big towering clock was above that spot. Robin, not only hit the ball that far, but, also managed to clear the TOP of the clock. Only player I know who hit a ball that far at that spot. later, managed to see him pitch in Baltimore. The best of both worlds here, and now he gets to pitch in that Field of Dreams.

May 9, 2010

I saw him pitch once as a lad when he was an Astro; Robin as a pitcher was a stud, completing a large number of starts. And while he gave up a lot of taters, that was largely due to his control being so damn good and like fellow HoF pitcher Catfish Hunter, he made sure most of 'em were solo blasts. I salute you Robin as you depart this earth for that Big Diamond in the Sky>

I had the pleasure to play in a golf tournament with Robin at the 1991 All Star Game, and to this day it was the most enjoyable afternoon I have ever had on a golf course. He was so engaging, he sent each of my children a personalized autographed picture of his Hall of Fame induction and he went out of his way at a reception to bring his lovely wife Mary over to intoduce us to her. A whole party of us went down to Schieb Park to see the Phils take on the Milwaukee Braves.Unbeknownst to me, arrangements had been made to have me go down to the clubhouse to meet the players, including my favorites, Robin and Curt Simmons. (his sister worked with my father). A picture was taken of me between the two pitchers. It subsequently appeared in the local newspaper. What a memorable moment for a young gung-ho Phils fan. I will treasure that memory forever.

Everytime I think Phillies, I think the Whiz Kids and Robin Roberts. I was a die-hard Phillies fan from the 40's on. As a high schooler I worked at an agency where several of the team bought their Caddies or Olds. Always felt if the team had given Robin better hitting he would have well over 300 wins. Seems every time he started a game, the opposition threw their best pitcher against the Phillies. What a great addition to the Heavenly Team. Thanks Robin.
