Rod Beck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 24, 2007.
Rod Beck, a relief pitcher who wore a bushy mustache while earning 286 career saves, was found dead Saturday. He was 38.

Beck was found by police officers responding to a call to his home in suburban Phoenix, according to police department spokesman Andy Hill. Foul play is not suspected, though the cause of death might not be known for several days.

With long hair framing a menacing stare and an aggressive arm swing before delivering a pitch, the outgoing right-hander was a memorable baseball personality and a three-time All-Star who twice led the NL in saves. He spent the first seven of his 13 major league season with the San Francisco Giants.

Beck was popular with his teammates, reporters and fans, but battled personal demons late in his life. He abruptly left the San Diego Padres for a two-month stint in drug rehabilitation during his final season in 2004.

''He was having some problems, and I just knew he went into rehab and joined us later that year,'' said Giants manager Bruce Bochy, the Padres' manager at the time. ''It's so sad when you see healthy players go at such a young age. This is a bad day in baseball to lose a guy who did so much for the game.''

Nicknamed ''Shooter,'' Beck played for the Giants (1991-97), the Chicago Cubs (1998-99) and the Boston Red Sox (1999-2001) before finishing his career with the Padres (2003-04). Beck reportedly was living in a camper behind the Iowa Cubs' center-field fence when San Diego called.

Beck led the majors in saves in 1993, when he set the Giants' single-season record with 48. He was San Francisco's career saves leader with 199 until Robb Nen passed him in 2002.

Beck led the majors again in 1998 with 51 saves for Chicago, helping the Cubs win the NL wild card. He had a career record of 38-45 in 704 games, with a 3.30 ERA.

''He was a great teammate and a great competitor,'' said Giants shortstop Rich Aurilia, who played his first three major league seasons with Beck in San Francisco. ''He left an impression on everybody he played with. You talk to everybody, they'll have nothing but good things to say. He's somebody that Giants fans will always remember.''

Aurilia recalled being wary of Beck's mustache and mullet when he came up as a rookie in 1995 _ but Beck was among the first to congratulate Aurilia on making the team.

Beck was a favorite at Candlestick Park through most of the 1990s, but left to sign with the Cubs as a free agent in 1998. He saved 51 games in his first season in Chicago, but managed just 46 saves in his final five seasons combined.

To Rodney,
The cousin I never really knew. You carried my fathers name Roy. When he passed away I fell into a deep depression and 26 years of my own hell. When I found out I was so sad that I never had the chance to really see you again in life, that I never had a chance to talk with you.
Now 21 years sober I wish I could have been there for you... we were just kids the last time I saw you...it was Christmas, and those were awesome memories. I can see how that impression stayed with you!
I wish your family all of my condolences and to know that even though you don't know me, Rodney and his family have always been in my thoughts through the years. How sad I am not to have been a part of your lives before we lost you.

Rod was a friend to almost anyone who cared to say hi to him. As a volunteer with the Padres he and I got to be friends .He gave new a glove and his jersey from his last home game with the Padres then invited me out to his motor home for a beer. Hell of a man and friend . I will cherish that friend ship forever as you can see from this late entry.

Rod, I have been thinking about you lately and want you and everyone to know you're with some of us everyday. I met you once outside Wrigley after a game and you were kind enough to give me an autograph and even kinder to stick around and talk to me....just a fan...but you treated me in that moment as a friend...I will never forget that. As sad as we are that you're not with us.....I can't imagine how we would be if you had never been here...you'll always be close to my thoughts and heart....keep watching over us. I know that Wrigley carries your spirit to compete and win....all Cub fans owe you a tip of the cap for bringing respect to the team. I'll be smiling at you as the Cubs continue their journey to winning. Thanks for being a Cub.

Heroes are remembered but Legends never die... Rodney, you were a true leader in every sense of the word. From our days at North Hollywood Little League to East Valley to Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Babe Ruth Baseball to High School you were always the standard bearer. I had the privilege of playing with and against you. It is great to read about all the wonderful things you did off the field. When your name comes up, I am going to remember you for all the great things. RIP my friend.

I never met Rod personally, but my wife is a very good friend of Stacey and her mother. I remember watching Rod in relief appearances with both the Giants and Cubs, and being a Yankee fan, I wished that someday he would wear a Yankee uniform. From everything I had heard about him, he was a generous human being, a loving husband and father, and he will be sorely missed.

Rod was one of a kind as a man, husband, father and baseball player. He loved life and all that it held for him. I will never forget the first time I met Rod, we were both young, nor the last time I saw him, we were not so young. His passing was a complete shock and a huge loss for his family and friends, no one could ever come close to replacing him. My heart goes out to you Stacy, Kayla, Kelsey, Ervin and Shirley you have endured a loss that no one should have to go through. Take comfort in knowing how much Rod was loved, how much of an impact he had on this world and knowing you will be reunited someday. Life will go on, time will ease the hurt and pain but the love will stay forever..... We will love you always Rod, till we meet again, take it easy and remember the good times.

July 30, 2007

Stacey, my deepest condolences to you, your daughters, and surviving family on the loss of your beloved Rod. My name is L.T. Schroeder, you and Rod lived above my mother Julie Schroeder and me in some small Scottsdale apartments when you and Rod were just starting out and early in Rod's career. You worked with Julie actually for awhile until Rod broke into the big league. My mother was always very fond of you and Rod. Rod often checked on Mom just to see how she was doing and was always very concerned for her well being. Even after you moved away, he'd come by the office during spring training just to say hello. Unfortunately, Julie passed away May 2006 of an incurable lung disease. She would have been very sad to hear about the sudden loss of Rod, and of the grief you and your family are in. Please know that my family's prayers are with the Beck family. Also know that we had great times watching him play. Mom always checked the box scores to see how Rod fared. I'm sure they have bumped into each other up there and are sharing a cold one. Blessings to you and your's.

The last time we saw Rod Beck was when he had already left San Francisco. We knew he was going to play there with his new team. So my
grand-daughter Marissa and I, made a sign with a roll of paper. It was long and big. On it we wrote: We Love you Becky! As his bus was leaving after the game, we held up our sign. He was looking thru the back window. He saw the sign, and he smiled and waved at us. We missed him and he knew that he was
still remembered fondly. How could we forget his inimitable piching style and his wonerful persona. Sadly, Marissa too, left us too soon, at the age of 18. But I like to think she's up there cheering him on. Our Becky!

Stacey, Kayla & Kelsey,

Dan & I have known you for these past 15+ years, having met through your mom Fran. We have loved all of you and continue to do so. Our deepest sympathies are with you with our prayers. Rod was an inspiration to many and so well respected. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all always. We feel that you are an extended family. The love and compassion that you all gave to both of us during these years will always be treasured. We love you all and will continue to have you in our hearts always.

To all of you who have signed this guest book and sent love and prayers to our family, I thank you. The girls and I have been so moved by the thoughts and memories that you have shared. It is amazing the reach a single person can have in this world, Rod has touched so many lives. He genuinely loved the people in his life; fans, friends, family. He also wanted to help others and was a champion for people living with HIV/AIDS.
In reading through this guestbook I have been moved by all of the comments, and have enjoyed hearing from people we had lost touch with, those we met on vacation, fans we met throughout the years, classmates from many years ago as well as family and friends we saw often.
To the Giants and Rod's teammates -a special thank you for honoring Rod's memory, the person he was on and off of the field. He loved the game, respected it, and was thriled that he could use his "fame" to help those in need.
We consider each of you a blesing and your support and fond memories have made this difficult time easier for us.
To honor Rodney's memory the girls and I will continue to help others, we will keep you posted on our efforts. Thank you all again for sharing a piece of yourselves with us.
We hope that this tragedy reminds each of us to cherish every day, for life is fragile, and to reach out to others - we can each make a difference!
Best wishes

To Stacey and the girls. I admire so much how you three have been handling this time in your lives. As a father, I am so envious of the strength you have. Stacey, you are the most amazing mother a child could ask for. You have done such a great job raising two beautiful girls whom each have their own wonderful characteristics. Because of you, they will grow with love in their heart and the knowledge of many facts of life that few parents take the time to educate their own on. You continue to give me the strength needed to be the best father I can be for Dani. I will always love you for that.

Rodney, Thank you for all you and Stacey have brought to my life. I look forward to the day that we play whiffle ball again. No strikeouts on that field, so be ready.

I was fortunate to know Rod since we were 14. He was not only a great Pitcher but an all around ballplayer. He was as good a catcher as anyone I have ever seen and when he was not pitching or catching he would be making diving stops at SS. He could hit too. As 15 year old sophmore in HS he hit a 400+ foot homerun to dead center off the LA City player of the year and future pro pitcher, Jeremy Hernandez. A fantastic all around athlete, he could play a solid game of hoops, throw the football like a rocket, and even play a decent game of tennis, although he only picked up a racket a couple times.

As good a ballplayer as he was he was even a better person. He treated everyone with friendliness & respect no matter who you were. Success never changed him and while he had tons of confidence he did not have an ego. He and his wife Stacey have been very generous and he touched many many lives.

We will miss you Rod.

It is only in these days after Rod’s passing that I have come to realize how much he really meant to others who knew him. I am also coming to realize just what he meant to me. The pain of his passing cut deeper than I could have imagined.
I am now also beginning also see how he felt about those around him, his friends, his family, acquaintances and even his fans. Surely he has left an indelible mark on all who knew him, and left a permanent imprint on the face of Baseball and the Baseball community. What can any of us ask for, other than to leave such an impression on all those around us when we pass on?

Rod and I shared several common interests. I will always remember our annual camping trips to the desert over New Years and The Guys trip we often make when the season ended. We also had the family gatherings on the Holidays and various times each year when he would be in town. The memories keep coming but I cant tell them all here. May his entire legacy be positive and may everyone touched by him benefit for knowing him. I truly loved my brother, Rodney... I will miss you.

On Behalf of his Mother, Father and Brother.
I thank you all for your kind words and thoughts.

As a 4th grader watching ROD beck domintate for the giants, it was the first glimpse of an Dominant closer I've gotten in my life. As a giants fan living in New Jersey, I got to see Rod in person, at Shea Stadium, I remember being in the corner of the dugout and called his name to sign an autograph. He told me to hold on as he loaded his mouth with chew, as a young kid I really had no idea what he was even doing, but then he came over and signed for us just before heading down to the clubhouse. Nothing better though then watching hang his hand lifelessly before he through his pitch.

I am a Padres fan, even in the not so good years. One of those years was 2003. However, it was great seeing Shooter fill some big shoes (T. Hoffman - injured) that year. I was at a sold out Padres/Giants game July 4 weekend 2003. As Giants fans know, it is always an intense game, no matter where either team is in the standings. Shooter came in to get the save, which included getting B. Bonds to ground out after a long at bat - it was fantastic.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at the loss of Rod. I hope that all of the special memories you have ease the gap that is left by the loss of such a special person. Rod was one of a kind and everyone that knew him will miss him. "9 in mine" will always bring to mind that special guy.

A Giant in every way. I met him after retirement, and told him how he was my favorite pitcher, he signed my SF Giants cap, we talked and laughed for quite some time. Godspeed Shooter.

To the Beck Family:
Rod was truely an inspiration for living life and enjoying every minute of it. I will always cherish the memories from Shreveport, LA (the S'port Captains) where I met Rod and Stacey and spent wonderful times with them. The sadness will leave and the wonderful memories will fill our hearts once more.
