The first time I saw Sean play was in Savannah, late 80s maybe. I was a fan from the start. I would go see his shows when ever he came to the area, sometimes even driving an hour or two for a show. It was always worth it. He never seemed troubled to talk with his fans between sets,I've shook his hand many times.
Traveling to Atlanta from Savannah one time we stopped in Metter GA to get something to eat, there sitting and having lunch was Sean and his band. I apologized for interrupting their lunch but said hello and explained I was a fan that enjoyed his music and watching him preform. Sean didn't seam to be bothered one bit. We exchanged a few words, I told him I hoped to see him the next time he came this way. He said thank you, we shook hands, and then went our separate ways.
That was the last time I saw him.
After I finished high school I worked at the Hyatt in Savannah for a number of years. I've met many A-list celebrities and musicians. Sean was A-list to me and although he probably isn't the most recognizable name in my "I've met" stories he's at the top of my list.
Thank you Sean for sharing your music and always making time for your fans.
Your music plays on.
Brian.

I first heard of Sean through my college professor Dr. Paul Linden, who as you know, was in Sean's band. The first song I heard was, Have You Know Shame, and it seemed like time stood still and my spine tingled like never before. Since then, I've listen to Sean's music at least once a day, if not all day. I can relate to his struggles and his songs give me strength to, "drive on till i get there"

Hey Sean, so sorry we never really met and got to know you. Sonia speaks so highly of you I just know we'd all have been great friends. What a loss to the music community and a loss to someone I care a lot about. Sleep soundly knowing she keeps your memory alive and we are watching over her all the time we can as I know you are too.

When tragedy strikes and takes the life of our loved ones, we cry out due to the pain in our heart. Our tears are not unnotice by our heavenly father, although your deep pain will not easily disappear, Almighty God is near to those who are broken heart and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.

"I've got a light. It keeps on shining in my mind. Day and night. It just keeps burnin' all the time." - Sean Costello, No Half Steppin'
Sean spoke for those of us with bipolar diagnoses. We don't just hear his lyrics; we hear our lives.

For Sean...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

To Sean's mom, Deb:
Thank you for sharing your son with us and for sharing your thoughts and words through your grief. Sean's talent is immense and his loss is enormous. Sean's music touched the entire Gonzalez family through an introduction of his music by my son, Victor. We have seen the intensity and virtuousity of his music captured in utube performances. We have lamented the fact that not enough people have been exposed to his artistic brilliance. We listened to the radio interviews that give a glimpse of Sean's gentle and intellectual and strong spirit. Victor's comments to you can be viewed on the Bazooka blog http://thebazookacollective.blogspot.com/ where his brother posted a video of one of Sean's breathtaking live performances. Sean is not forgotten. Thank you for reaching out.

Sean made his debut appearance in Hawaii on Aug 16, 2002, which I have just come to realize marked his 23rd birthday. Not knowing who this young artist was I gazed around the room wondering what he might look like. Suddenly from the side of the stage appeared a young friendly looking chap. As he headed for the rear of the club he looked around at the audience. He cracked me a smile when he gazed my way and I reciprocated with a thumbs-up and a big smile. His performance that evening really wowed me. He was young, could sing and damn could he play the blues! I decided to pick-up his CD Moanin' For Molasses at the show during intermission before the next artist. While waiting in line I got a chance to talk with Mel Zachary (his bass player), then with the man himself, Sean. He was very down to earth and graciously signed my CD. I got him a cold glass of water and told him that I hoped to see him perform again someday. In the years that have gone by I would occasionally check his website. On July 29th of this year I was shopping around on Amazon.com and I learned of his new CD We Can Get Together. I got pretty excited then curiously began reading the reviews posted by customers that bought it. But suddenly my heart sank in disbelief and shock to learn that he had passed away. How?... Why?... Sean was such a tremendous talent. Memories of seeing his performance back in '02 with my buddies came flashing though my mind. I can only hope that Sean is playing to his hearts content in another paradise. Perhaps listening to him is one of my buddies also from that evening that passed away in 2006. Rest in peace guys. My deepest condolences to his family, friends and band mates.

i just learned from a friend I...am so crushed at his passing. I first stumbled into Sean on a monday night @ fatbacks in buckhead 9 yeasr ago lookin for some good 'Q. instead i had my head gently blown off and was sure i was witnessing eric clapton, or better, much better.
at a break i went up to him and said "my god who are you ? .. and why are you playing here ? !" " he just said, in his typical sweet way, he lived nearby. I last, and always, dragged people to see him here in nc when he played with nappy brown in chapel hill...i just am so, so sad. Sean your light shone very bright God Bless You and to all his friends and family my shared grief and condolences, he will be missed. Sean, I am so grateful I had the chance to meet you, keep god happy. play for him. your music lives on. thank you

Thank You for the Blues. The !st ever BluesFestival I went to, you were there and I fell in love with the music, the guitar and you. You were 16 and I had to get your autograph because someday I knew you would be "Great". Many time after that 1st bluesfest I saw you and fell in love all over again and again with your music. I'll miss all the music you would have made but I am forever thankful for all the music you did make and the way it made me feel. Peace to you Sean.

I have so so many wonderful memories of Sean and I'll share just one or two here: We arrived at Northside Tavern for one of those all day concerts around the 4th of July about 5 years ago. It had been some time since we'd seen Sean and the guys so as I hugged him in greeting, asked how he was doing, and how was everyone else? He said 'Everyone's doing fine...but no one's doing as well as me.' Had the most beautiful smile on his face when he said that, I must say. Obviously, I asked why and he said 'I met a girl - her name is Amy.'
Just like a sweet loving puppy...My instant reaction was wow, this guy could have any girl on any night...he just has no idea. Or maybe that wasn't what he was looking for. Anyway, he'd met Amy Helm (Levon Helm's daughter) and they had a relationship for several years (can't remember how many).
We followed him for almost 15 years and we absolutely adored Sean. He was such a sweet, understated, humble guy with no idea how awesome he really was. As I tend the Sean Costello flower garden every day, I think of him and hope he's found peace.
One other thing I remember from many many times is seeing his mom and dad dancing while Sean worked his magic on the crowd. That always touched my heart and it always will be a sweet memory. That and his dad proudly telling us all the great stuff that Sean was up to. You just knew that Sean had total loving support from his folks.
We miss Sean more than words can say. God's blessings on him and on his family. Debbie, we were sending love to you on mother's day. Take good care of yourself.

I was fortunate enough to meet Sean back in 2006 while I was working as the Bar Manager for Humphrey's By The Bay in San Diego Ca. Sean played our lounge and he brought the house down with every song. I remember watching him from behind the bar and thinking to myself, "musicians play our lounge when they are on their way up that "fame" ladder or on the way back down. Sean was clearly on his way up. Never had I seen a more talented performer with as much stage presence and charisma as I seen that night while watching Sean. After the show we met, and I was so impressed by how humble a man he was, you just don't see that in the entertainment business anymore. Really, you just don't. When he smiled I could tell there was an old soul in that young body. Sean gave me a copy of his latest CD at the time called "Sean Costello", I listened to that CD on my way home that night and new Sean was on the brink of Superstardom. his loss is tragic, and he will be missed by so many, but thankfully we have his music and voice. forever.

I met Sean in Grand Junction, Colorado, where he played an outside concert. What a terrific young talent! We told him he reminded us of Wilson Pickett, who had recently passed. This is a great tragedy indeed. Being a dj, I was so excited to play his new cd. Sean, you are missed...I hope you're in a lovely place. Genie

I was fortunate to see Sean perform some of the songs from his last CD at Alternative Brews, a blues club in a Buffalo, NY, suburb. It was quite a show. That was a couple years ago and shortly afterwards he went to SXSW in Austin, shopping the tunes to label reps. It's a great release - very soulful and introspective. Two musicians from the Buffalo area who had been in his touring band the past couple years were with him that day. Unfortunately, that was the last time I saw him - so I'll always treasure the CD. C. I can't begin to express the overwhelming sadness...Peace and comfort to Sean's family as they try to cope with unimaginable pain.
We live in Atlanta and Sean was one of our own. After following him and his band for almost 15 years, my husband and I feel we've lost a member of our family. We are so very proud of him and, though we're not necessarily blues fans, we will always be SEAN COSTELLO FANS.

Sad sad sad for the whole blues society around the world to loose, problably the most talented blues guitarplayer of his generation!
Got to know Sean, when I as a promoter, was the first in Scandinavia to present this very talented gentleman at our venue Tobakken in Esbjerg in Denmark. Four times the blues crowd in Esbjerg enjoyed Sean and his music and he and the band was supposed to play again in november, sadly that won't happen!. We're still shocked and will hereby give our deepest sympathy to Seans family.
Rest in peace, dear friend.

Sean's music made me smile, dance and cry. His talent and creative soul left me in awe. His humble and gentle spirit touched those who knew him, and his laughter was contagious. Sean, You have left us way to early. But then again, it seems we always lose the great ones then. It was a pleasure working with you in the past, I remember the times in the club and just being mismerized by your talent. I put off Wednesday night driving over to Athens to see ya only using the reason of heading to Buford to see you Friday instead. Unfortunatley, I did not make that show either. I pray that you are at peace, and sitting in with the rest of em, tuning up and having a jammin good time. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. Till then... Peace

It is so heartwarming to see all the lovely things that friends and fans of Sean have expressed. Like many, I am also amazed how Sean could bring such emotion to the stage as a very young man. It is very obvious that Sean’s spirit has deeply affected many people from all over the world, and as we all share in that sorrow, may it also grant us some comfort.
My heart grieves for any moments of pain he felt – but at the same, it is lifted, grateful that he found a way to express and share that soulfulness with so many of us through his music.
So, thank you, Sean, for the smiles and the tears. Thank you for helping so many of us to pause and reflect on all the joy and pain in this life.
So many have been blessed by your presence. We will miss you.
We rejoice, and we mournfully weep, since you have Gone Home.

Sean was oh so lucky to be able to play his guitar like he could. He could win a showdown with the rest of the blues greats he played with during his short career. I saw him in Memphis at the Handy Awards and a number of times in ATL. He was one of the few you always wanted to see again and again because he had a great talent and never played the same old songs. I had a chance to thank him several times for his talents he shared so willingly.
Seans' music will live on forwever by the huge footprint he left on this earth and in our hearts, that now have the blues. We are sorry for your loss but he is in the good hands of his creator. I'm sure he is a great place. He can never be replaced but his memory will live on.

I had the good fortune of having Sean at our local music fest the week after he graduated high school in 1979. He was a very energetic young man with a heart for the "classic" electric blues of the 50's and man, could he play. It was all good and LOUD. Sean will be missed and I know his star will shine for years to come in the world of blues music.

Last year, I saw Sean Costello for the first time live and that makes me a big fan. Later that year I saw him for the second time and at that moment I thought that I would see him many many times in the future. Till last week.
Now, I only can thank Sean for those two great nights and, of course, his CD's.
The way he mixed the blues- and soulmusic, nobody can/could that better.
Thank you Sean, rest in peace and sorry for the bad english

I was shocked when I read that Sean has passed away. Five years ago, I had the honour to see and hear him at work at The Banana Peel Blues Club (Belgium). What a wonderful talent he was. Sean and the band put on an amazing performance at The Gutter Lounge at Liberty Lanes in Pensacola, Florida, on Sept. 21, 2007. Fans had traveled from Louisiana and other distant locales just to watch him play that night, yet he was down-to-earth, kind and humble. It was our first “Sean Costello experience” and we were a bit surprised when this clean cut young man, who was just blending in with the crowd, took the stage - and rocked it! Sean’s demeanor and his music made a lasting impression on us. We are deeply saddened by his passing, and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. May Sean live on through his music and the memories of those he influenced.

I first heard Sean at Fat Matts Ribshack when he was about 15. His dad would bring him to the shows to sit in. He blew me away. Ever since then I would try to see him around town whenever I could. Last Tuesday night I could see on my phone that I had missed two calls from Magic Fred. I called back and left him a message that "Yes", I knew that Sean was suppose to play at Northside Wednesday night to celebrate his birthday, but Lee and I were flying to New York early Thursday morning so we weren't going to be able to go Wednesday, much less Friday or Saturday night, as much as I would like to be in two places at once! Then Bill Hudson called and gave me the awful news.
Of course Lee and I ended-up going over to Northside Wednesday night to pay our respects, hug our blues friends, shake hands with the regulars, just trying to carry on. Lee remarked that Eddie Tigner looked older, no easy feat. His hands were playing, but there was no smile on his face. But I didn’t know how bad I felt until they played his music on WRFG the next morning on my drive to work. It was too much for me to listen to it. I had to turn it off and roll down the windows to try to dry my eyes.
I have my own group of favorite bands and performers but Sean was special. He had more than youthful good looks and talented hands; there was something vulnerable about him as well...a place where he could find those blues. It didn’t matter whether he was playing acoustic rootsy blues with Jon Liebman, or full blues rock slide guitar with his band, or just sittin’ in for the pleasure of playing, his music and voice spoke to me.
Now, I’ve seen plenty of guitar mouth on stage, but like Blackjack once said, Sean does guitar body. The music filled his body, and in turn he filled our souls with life. I know this for certain, we were blessed to hear and know him.

The world of blues music and guitar players morn the loss of this talented young man. Sean's music had energy, soul and passion. I truly admired this man's talent. No guitarist since SRV has touched me so deep as Sean. Go home and live with God Sean...you will be missed.

Sean sure could play.
I had the pleasure of seeing him open for and then back Hubert Sumlin at a small club (The Cutting Room) in New York a couple of years ago. Another pretty good player, Steve Van Zandt, happened to be at the next table.
Sean was able to share his gift with a lot of people.
I'm glad I was one of them.
It's sad to lose such a fresh young talent.
My prayers are with his friends and family.

The blues world, indeed, the music world, is diminished by Sean's departure.
It is staggering to imagine what his prodigious talent could have matured into over time!
I extend my hearfelt condolences to family, friends, associates and fans around the world.
He's "too soon gone," but his music lives with us!

Sean, I missed you last Monday, last year, and all the time that passed since we last saw each other. I thought we would just stop that time from passing and I could in turn stop missing you so much next time I came home. I really did. But the word "miss" now fails--with all misery--to describe how I feel about your absence from my life. I wish I could just miss you again. I love you so much. Your friendship always was and always will be in my bones. Debbie, Glenn, Bridgett and Allison (about whom I've only ever heard), I am so sorry. I am so sorry. I don't know the words.

I was fortunate enough to see Sean twice in East Tawas Michigan at the Blues Festival in 06 and 07. I am deeply saddened by his untimely death. My heart pours out to his family and friends. This last year I had the opportunity to talk with him and his band and I will never forget it. His musical talents were fascinating to me. His voice and guitar playing were a perfect match. I love you Sean and will miss you forever.

Sean's music will live on. This is an incredibly sad time as
Sean was one of the finest blues musicians to have emerged in the past twenty years. His music had a depth that belied his age.Sincere condolences to his family and friends. His loss is enormous.

You touched many souls with your spirit and your music. You will be missed but your spirit will stay alive in the blues.

I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Sean at a small venue here in Atlanta where he was playing. I was as impressed with his warm friendly personality as i was with his playing- which is not always the case with super talents like Seans'. My deepest condolences go out to family and close friends- a truly unimaginable loss.
