Stan Lynde Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 7, 2013.
HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Western cartoonist and author Stan Lynde, creator of the nationally syndicated "Rick O'Shay" comic strip, had died of cancer in Montana. He was 81. His "Rick O'Shay" comic strip began in 1958 and ran for 20 years with an average daily readership of about 15 million people. In 1979, he launched another comic strip, "Latigo," which ran through 1983. Lynde died Tuesday in Helena, where he lived with his wife.

Myron Stanford "Stan" Lynde was born in Billings in 1931 and was raised on a cattle and sheep ranch on Montana's Crow Indian Reservation. His mother gave him crayons and paper and taught him to draw to keep her young son occupied, said Lynde's sister, Lorretta.

"Cowboys were my heroes," Stan Lynde told the Independent Record in December 2012. "I followed them around and they played with me."

His parents read him the cartoons in the Sunday newspaper, and he said it was an "epiphany" when he learned that people were paid to write and draw cartoons.

"I wanted to be a cartoonist all my life - from age 5 or 6, that's what I wanted to do," Lynde said in December. He drew daily comics in high school and created the comic strip "Ty Foon" for the Navy newspaper while he served during the Korean conflict.

In the 1950s, he moved to New York, where he drew on his ranch background and his affinity for Western humor to create the "Rick O'Shay" strip that included characters such as gunslinger Hipshot Percussion, banker Mort Gage and a kid named Quyat Burp who lived in the western town of Conniption.

The characters in the comic strip were composites "of the old time cowboys and the people I knew growing up," Lynde said.

He moved back to Montana in 1962 after his "Rick O'Shay" cartoon was established and appearing in about 100 papers including the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

When Lynde retired from cartooning, he wrote eight Western novels featuring the character Merlin Fanshaw. He also wrote a historical novel, "Vigilante Moon."

Late last year, Lynde donated some of his original art, memorabilia and possessions to the Montana Historical Society in Helena, including his trademark hat. "Stan was an incredibly creative and soft-spoken man," said Bruce Whittenberg, director of the Montana Historical Society. "You couldn't help but respect him. He was such a class act."

Helena artist Bob Morgan called Lynde a "real gentleman" who loved cartooning and "was a great contributor to Montana."

"I feel very blessed," Lynde told the IR in December. "I've been able to do the work I love for an appreciative audience. I love this state and people of this state. If my tombstone said something about Montana, I'd be really happy. I've never met any state with people who have such character."

Lynde and his wife, Lynda, moved to Ecuador in January but returned to Helena this spring w hen he became ill. Lynde is survived by his wife and eight children.

My Dad and I read Rick O'Shay every Sunday, and we loved every character, even the cat. Some years back, Stan was kind enough to help me connect with some outfitters for an elk hunt. I'll never forget Stan and his art.

Didn't realize Mr. Lynde had passed until something reminded me of his great work and I looked him up on my phone. Like so many, we enjoyed Rick O'Shay and Hipshot for so many yrs and then all of a sudden it had disappeared from the papers. I was busy with other things and didn't realize it was gone sadly. Many yrs later I was driving through Yellowstone and was caught in a snow storm in June and was so happy to get to the Montana side and stopped at the first lodging I could find. It was a B&B called Cottonwood Ranch and extremely friendly and nice. I noticed the cartoons of Rick O'Shay and finally realized this was Mr. Lynde's to my pleasant surprise. After a lot of discussion about the strip and the fact that ownership was by a syndicate which I thought was very unfair I pondered it. I believe I corresponded with him a couple of times thinking that maybe someway it could be purchased back but nothing came of it. So nice to have a cartoon started by a fellow believer and one that wasn't afraid to let it be known. RIP Stan Lynde.

I met Stan Lynde about 20 years ago in a mall in Billings, Mt. I bought a original Rick O'Shay cartoon signed by him. I am proud of it. It hangs in our home in a special place.
Stan was a Christian man, he is in a far better place. We miss him!

When I was a little girl, in the days of Gunsmoke and Roy Rogers, I wrote to Mr. Lynde because I admired the Rick O'Shay comic strip so much. He was so very kind to write back to me, and that letter remains one of my greatest treasures. I will never forget the detailed drawings of the strip, and especially the Christmas and Easter "stories" with Hipshot. I, too, continue to try & live the simple life, and treasure its memories, especially when times get tough. RIP Mr. Lynde, thank you, and condolences to your family, friends, and fans.

The sole reason for the Chicago Tribune for me was reading Rick O'Shay! I was inspired and wanted to be a comic strip artist because of Stan. I was later in the Marines in Desert Storm and wrote to him. He wrote back and sent me some great stuff. I then got a chance to visit him in his log cabin studio near Kalispell Montana. First Class gentleman! May he rest in Peace!

I loved his cartoons and their rock solid messages of morals, fair treatment of your fellow man. One cartoon I recall - the gunslinger tells Rick "Christmas is the promise and Easter is the proof." God bless you Stan and thanks!

When I was young my family moved to Billings from Salt Lake City. My Dad loved westerns and turned me on to the comic strip Rick O'Shay and the TV series Gunsmoke and Bonanza. Those were the good old days in the mid 60's to early 70's. My father really admired the works of Mr. Lynde. I also developed a great appreciation for his work. My family's condolences reach out to the Lynde family and you will all be in our prayers.

It's been years since I met Stan in Kalispell, WY. He was kind enough to sign a picture of Rick and Hipshot, making me an official "Ricky". We've missed him since, and will miss him more. He's an indelible part of Montana.

Having grown up in Montana, then moving to California, I was especially proud of the expert craftsmanship Mr. Lynde displayed in his "Rick O'Shay" strip. I went to the University of Montana with his sister in 1966 who was also a cartoonist for the school's newspaper.
My condolences to Mr.Lynde's family and his sister, and he left a mighty fine legacy that made the old West and Montana proud. Rest in peace, Stan!
