Steven Kanaly Obituary

Kanaly
Steven Patrick Kanaly was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on August 9, 1953, son of E. Deane and Virginia Lee Kanaly. He passed away at his family's vacation home in Snowmass, Colorado, on January 11, 2011. Steven is preceded in death by his father E. Deane Kanaly. He is survived by: his mother Virginia Lee Kanaly; his devoted wife of 21 years Vicki C. Kanaly; daughter Kourtney Louise Kanaly, son Kamden Deane Kanaly and their mother Becky Page: his brother Jeffrey Kanaly, wife Debra Kanaly, their daughter Morgan, and son Chase; his brother Andrew Kanaly, daughter Virginia Lee, son William Gray and their mother Lisa W. Kanaly.
Steve moved with his family to Houston, Texas, as a small child. After graduating from Westchester Senior High in Houston, Steve attended The University of Texas at Austin. He earned a BBA in 1976, with a major in finance and a minor in Trusts and Estates.
Upon graduation from UT, Steve began work with his father at Kanaly Trust Company. He assisted in the company's initial formation and fundraising efforts and took the position of a financial planner. Steve specialized in sophisticated financial planning for high net worth families, which led him to being elected Chairman of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA). During his career with Kanaly Trust, he served for several years as president and subsequently as a vice chairman. Steve retired from the company in 2008 but continued to serve on its board of directors until the time of his death.
Steve was very committed to financial planning and was a highly respected professional in the field during his career. Along with serving as NAPFA chairman, Steve appeared four times on Worth Magazine's list of "America's Best Financial Advisors" and four times on Medical Economics; list of 150 Best Financial Advisers for Doctors. He was also active with the Houston Estate and Financial Forum, the Houston Business and Estate Planning Council, and the Financial Planning Association. In addition, Steve was a regular contributor to local and national financial media.
A strong member of the Houston community, Steve involved himself heavily in community and charitable causes. He was a member of the River Oaks Breakfast Club and served as a facilitator for the Greater Houston Partnership's CEO Roundtable. He was heavily involved with supporting the Texas-Ex Student Association, the American Heart Association, Texas Children's Hospital, the Houston Symphony, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the American Cancer Society and the United Way.
During his career, Steve was recognized in Who's Who of Houston, Who's Who of America U.S. Registry, Who's Who Citations of Rising Young Americans in Society and Business, Who's Who International, Who's Who in Executives and Professionals and Who's Who in Finance and Industry.

Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances from four o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening, on Monday, the 17th of January, in the Library and Grand Foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 18th of January, in the Sanctuary at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road in Houston, where Dr. Tom Pace, Senior Pastor, is to officiate.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception at a venue to be announced during the service.

Dear Ginger, Jeff, and Drew,
You will remember me as Barbara O'Brien (Noble). I was the girl from across the street who babysat with you three darling boys and Boudreau. My heart broke when I heard of Steve's death. You see, he was my favorite and never failed to be of help to me when I was there keeping you all. Even the night Boudreau ate the entire tube of Brylcream off of the bathroom counter upstars on Taylorcrest...Steve came to my rescue. Over the years, I have thought of the many hours I kept you guys on Taylorcrest and Olympia and my memories are always warm and funny. My heart goes out to you all but as a mother...to Ginger most of all! I am so deeply sorry. I lost my mother just a year ago this coming February 13th and I can tell you that the pain of Steve's death will eventually ease somewhat. God bless you all. Barbara

Dear Kanaly Family:

What wonderful memories I have of Steve Kanaly!! We worked hard together at the outset of Kanaly Trust Company to serve the Company's clients and to make the Company great and to enhance my early career at Vinson Elkins. The memories come the strongest of what a man of integrity Steve was...and a man who loved his work and the people he served...and a man who loved his family. People like Steve Kanaly cannot be replaced.

My prayers are with Ginger, Drew, Jeff, Vicki, Kourtney and Kamden.

Dear Kanaly Family,

I too have fond memories of Steve from Westchester. He was a cut above even then and I wasn't surprised to hear how much he accomplished and how many organizations and people he helped in his lifetime, who will benefit from his goodness even beyond his time here.

I will remember your family in my prayers.

Dear Vicki,
I was very saddened when you called me on the 11th to inform me of Steve's death. I am so grateful that Steve came to see me when you guys were in Dallas for Christmas. We had a great time catching up with each other that day. Steve and I loved reminiscing about the old college days in Austin. Even though I have never met Kamden and Kourtney, he spoke of them with great pride and love. He also spoke very loving of you as well. Vicki, the world will miss Steve. He was a man of great character with a wonderful personality. If I can ever be of any help to you or the kids, I would be honored to do so.
