Teresa Brewer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2007.
NEW YORK (AP) - Singer Teresa Brewer, who topped the charts in the 1950s with such hits as ''Till I Waltz Again with You'' and performed with jazz legends Count Basie and Duke Ellington, died Wednesday. She was 76.

Brewer died at her home in New Rochelle of a neuromuscular disease, family spokesman Bill Munroe said. Her four daughters were at her bedside.

Brewer had scores of hits in the 1950s and a burgeoning film career but pared down her public life to raise her children. She re-emerged a decade later to perform with jazz greats Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Wynton Marsalis.

''She was just a wonderful, lovely lady,'' said Munroe, a longtime family friend. ''Her career was always a hobby with her; her family always came first. She always considered her legacy not to be the gold records and the TV appearances, but her loving family.''

Brewer had close to 40 songs that topped the charts, Munroe said, including ''Dancin' with Someone,'' ''Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall,'' ''Ricochet'' and ''Let Me Go Lover.''

Throughout her decades-long career, Brewer performed on TV with Mel Torme, sang with Tony Bennett and guest-hosted several variety shows, including ''The Ed Sullivan Show.''

She was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1931, and her mother took her to her first audition at age 2 - for a radio show called ''Uncle August's Kiddie Show.'' Brewer sang ''Take Me Out to The Ball Game'' and performed for pay consisting of cupcakes and cookies from the show's sponsor.

Brewer continued appearing on radio shows off and on until high school, when she quit and moved to New York. There, she started performing in a string of talent shows, which eventually led to a recording career.

By 1952 she had her first hit, the single ''Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now,'' on Coral Records, and her first child.

In 1953, ''Till I Waltz Again With You'' sold more than 1.4 million copies. That year she also won a poll conducted by Paramount Pictures to select the country's most popular female singer to cast in the studio's 3-D Technicolor movie, ''Those Redheads from Seattle.''

She landed one of the title roles, and reviews were rave. Paramount offered her a seven-year contract, but she declined, choosing instead to stay in New Rochelle.

Brewer continued to record and make TV appearances, but she had four girls by then and spent most of her time raising them, Munroe said. Her popularity waned until the 1970s, when she became reacquainted with jazz producer Bob Thiele and began recording jazz standards with jazz greats. The two eventually married after she and her first husband divorced.

Funeral arrangements weren't complete, Munroe said. Brewer's survivors include her four daughters, four grandsons and five great-grandchildren. Thiele died in 1996.

I was born in 1946 so I grew up with Teresa Brewer, and we also had height in common - I was only 5' 2". I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her music and have periodically checked on her when I found out she was still entertaining later on in her life after raising her children. Although I have never been a mother, I can see she was one who cared more for her children than for herself. I hope they appreciate that. I will be purchasing some of her music within the next week, and will add her to my prayer list. She was an excellent role model.

For Teresa...

Lady...you were really something.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I graduated from Waite High School in 1947. Your Mom was a year younger and I remember her well. I had a "hay ride" date with her that for some reason I wasn't able to keep. She wrote a nice note in my annual which I treasure. I can remember like yesterday her performing in the school's annual musical. I still love and listen to her songs but remember her most as just a really nice person. God bless you and your families in this sad loss.

To the children and family of Teresa Brewer I send my deepest sympathy. I was born in 1956 so I don't really recall Ms. Brewer's music. My mom however loved her with a passion! So much so that she named me after her. I have always loved the fact that my name was spelled without an "H" in it. For the longest time, until I was an adult, I never ran into any Teresa's spelled "our" way. I am sure my Mommy has given your Mommy a great big "Welcome to Heaven!" May God continue to keep you and your families in his care, and may my namesake forever rest in peace.

How I loved "Til I Waltz Again With You"! WHen I was in the fifth grade I surprised my friends and entered a talent show singing that song in the familar Thersa Brewer style with the country "cracks" in the voice. I won the first prize...a five dollar bill! From there I entered every local talent show for the next few years, mostly at the "Town Hall" in my very small home town in NH. I still have the sheet music which now I will frame.
With fond memories love and sympathy.

October 21, 2007

The first record I ever heard by Teresa Brewer, was "Till I Waltz Again With You". I put many a coin in the jukebox to hear it. Loved the flip side, "Hello, Bluebird!"

I learned that her first #1 was in 1950, with "Music! Music! Music!" on London Records. It's magical!

I still have many of those 45's. Also have some of her jazz output. She really was so talented, that she could even do a mean yodel!

It's hard to let go of Teresa Brewer. But her voice will always be with us.

It was so inspiring to learn that she put her family, first!

My heartfelt condolences to her family!
