Vivian Jones Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 14, 2005.
ATLANTA (AP) - When Vivian Malone Jones tried to enroll at the University of Alabama in 1963, George Wallace stood in the way.

In his infamous "stand in the schoolhouse door," the then-governor of Alabama sought to block blacks from entering the school, despite orders to admit them. Eventually Wallace stepped aside and Jones and fellow student James Hood enrolled, but only after an agreement was reached between the White House and Wallace's aides.

Jones - who went on to become the first black to graduate from the school and had a long career serving the government that helped her attain a university education - died Thursday. She was 63.

She had been admitted to the Atlanta Medical Center on Tuesday after suffering a stroke, said her sister, Sharon Malone.

"She was absolutely fine Monday," Sharon Malone said.

Jones, a retired federal worker who lived in Atlanta, grew up in Mobile, Ala. She had enrolled at historically black Alabama A&M University in Huntsville when she transferred to the University of Alabama in 1963. The move led to then-Gov. Wallace's infamous stand in defiance of orders to admit black students. Jones and Hood, accompanied by then-Deputy U.S. Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach, enrolled after Wallace finished his statement and left.

At an appearance last year in Mobile, she recalled meeting with Wallace in 1996, when the former governor was in frail health. He died in 1998.

"I asked him why did he do it," she said. "He said he did what he felt needed to be done at that point in time, but he would not do that today. At that point, we spoke - I spoke - of forgiveness."

She recalled that she and Hood waited in a car until Wallace read his proclamation. Finally, when he stepped aside, she said, that allowed them to enter the university.

"I was never afraid. I did have some apprehensions in my mind, though, especially having gone to segregated, 'separate, but equal' schools," she said.

Jones said her religious beliefs gave her confidence to persist, and she graduated in 1965.

"God was with me," she said.

Hood left after a few months, but returned to receive his doctorate in 1997.

Now a retired educator living in Madison, Wis., Hood said Jones was a quiet person in public, but she always provided encouragement to him during the events at Alabama.

"She was a very determined person, probably more so than I was," he said Thursday.

He said the agreement between the White House and Walla ce's aides provided that Wallace would step aside. They had already enrolled quietly at the federal courthouse in Birmingham, and all they had to do was pay their fees and leave, he said.

He recalled talking to President Kennedy on the telephone.

"We knew it was going to be historic but we had no idea what the impact would be," he said.

After graduating, Jones went on to work for the U.S. Justice Department in Washington and for the Environmental Protection Agency in Atlanta, where she retired, her sister said.

"She had a long career in government," Sharon Malone said.

Wallace's son, George Jr., called Jones "a true American hero" and said he "was deeply saddened" to hear of her death.

University of Alabama President Robert E. Witt paid tribute to Jones on Thursday, saying she "opened the doors of opportunity for thousands of students. She will be remembered for her courage and grace that inspired young people throughout the world . We pray for strength for her family during this difficult time."

While Jones was the first black Alabama graduate, she and Hood were not the first to enroll at the school. Autherine Lucy enrolled at Alabama in 1956, but rioting broke out and her stay there was brief.

Jones is survived by a son, a daughter and a grandson. Her husband died last year.

I was thinking of Vivian last night when visiting with a friend here in Charlotte and we had a discussion about her. I am truly honored that I met her while working at the Environmental Protection Agency in Atlanta. She was a special lady. I will never forget in particular a special kindness she showed me. She is an important part of our history and I am blessed for having known her.

My Deepest Sympathy and Love for the family of my Courageous Sister Soror, Vivian Malone Jones. She is still in my heart and prayers.

Attorney General Eric Holder (her brother in law) is retiring. We honor him tremendously which brought me to a family legacy which brought my thoughts to Soror Vivian. Those thoughts made me want to reflect with pride because she, Mrs. Jones, will take you there.

As a young women, her and Mr. Hood made the decision to enroll in the University of Alabama. Despite a long and difficult day of waiting through the George Wallace "Display of Uselessness", they continued their journey. But then, the very next day, our Dear Brother Warrior, Megar Evers was shot and killed in his driveway in front of his wife and children, yet, they continued their journey ANYWAY. Then, several months later, Mr. Hood decided for his sanity, he could not do it any more and he left the University, and SHE continued her journey ANYWAY. OH,OH, WHAT A WOMEN! Her courage, her spirit, her tenacity, her commitment, her perserverance, her dedication, HER EVERYTHING. She is an inspiration to people everywhere and she will always be remembered. I know that God has her and he has you, her family also. I just wanted to say from afar, we love her and we appreciate her. We thank you for sharing her because her work only began that day and contimued throughout her life. She left a nugget of knowledge and encouragement with each and every person she touched (either physically or through learning about her). Again, thank you and may God continue to keep his loving arms around you.

Sincerely,
Her Soror Lynnette Miller

One nation under God is what this world was created to be. However, their are twist, curves, valley, trenches and ditches one must face. Nevertheless, with the same blood line I will lift my voice and use my mind and faith to take me beyond what was allowed to my relative. Although, what Vivian Malone Jones did is etched in history books will we as black women and men continue to enter into more colleges then prisons? Choose you a Historian and try to follow their fearless endeavors. But do finish the course that is set before you, Evangelist Nancy Malone Cooks.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Vivian. She will always remain in my memory as a person of courage. That historic day when Vivian courageously enrolled at the University of Alabama will forever be etched in my mind. I was a student at Stillman College, but lived just down the street from the University of Alabama.

To the Jones and Malone Family:

I was deeply sadden to hear of Vivian's "Home Going." Vivian and I first met at Alabama A&M University where we both shared the same major and attended most of our classes together. We often visited each other's dorm room and had many interesting and enjoyable conversations together. She also helped me with my studies sometimes. I knew Vivian to be a very intelligent, brilliant, graceful, poised, humble, kind and humorous person. After leaving Alabama A&M to intergrate the University of Alabama, she was truly missed by all; however, we were more than happy and excited for her and for the courageous stand she chose to undertake. I kept up with her endeavors through the news media for some time but I never had the opportunity to see or speak with her again. Through the years I often thought of her and wondered how she was doing. I know now that she lived a meaningful and wonderful life and has a wonderful family.

To her children, grandchildren, sisters and brothers and other family members, my deepest spiritual sympathy to you all and may God continue to bless you and keep you in His loving care. Please know that God is able to sustain you, through it all - for He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask of think, according to the power that worketh in us. Psalm 116:15 says: "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." I Praise God for Vivian's wonderful, fruitful and dedicated life and that she is now at rest with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May your faith in God be your source of strength, at this time.

From Labor to Reward....

This morning on my way to work, I was listening to the Tom Joyner Morning Show, when he presented the little known Black History fact, it was about Mrs. Vivian Malone Jones. I was shocked!!

I first met Mrs. Vivian at Allen University, Columbia, SC. (1995-96)

She spoke at a program sponsored by the members of Gamma Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. I had the opportunity to learn about her "stand" first hand!!! That was awesome!!! I can still see her on the stage in the auditorium delivering her speech.

"God has picked a flower from His garden and has planted another seed, it is up to us to keep Vivian's legacy alive by watering and nurturing that seed to full blossom.

My prayers are with the family of Vivian Malone Jones.

May you forever feel God's presence in your lives.

I thank God for the opportunity to see His "work in progress".

To the Family of Vivan Malone Jones;

Ms. Jones was a great woman and I have know her through the Heart to Heart Ministries in Altanta church where Pastor Charles H. Jackson presides a couple years. She always help us in the Health and Fitness Ministry and was eager to assist anyone at any time. She was always friendly, open and kind to everyone she met. I did not know that much about her background at first but once I begin to know her I appreciate her more in educating not only the young but the older person about how much we as african amercians have come and that we have a long way to go. I wish I spent more time talking with her but alot of times we get so involved with our lives we sometimes forget about others. Make sure that you do not forget to tell someone hello or that you love them today. It may be the last time you will see or hear from them. But remember that she will always be in your heart and mind. Many prayers to everyone and may God help you during this time of sorrow. You know that she is in heaven helping God with mending all of his angels.

May God Bless You and comfort You.

Yours truly with Love;

To the family of Vivian Malone Jones,

I met Mrs. Jones in 1963 at the University of Alabama where we were both members of the Wesley Foundation (the Methodist Student Center) together. I was truly privileged to know her during the time we shared together at Alabama. Her courage and determination were an inspiration to me. Her dedication to the cause of Civil Rights during her time at college and since have helped me to teach high school students about the era with more integrity than I ever could have had I not known her. My only regret is that I did not keep in touch with Mrs. Jones in subsequent years of our lives.

Please know that that her influence has spread throughout this country in ways that you will never fully realize. Her death has led me to want to seek out others who worked with the movement and who shared our experience.

I sought to communicate with Mrs. Jones’ family after I heard a reporter discussing her experiences at the University of Alabama after she entered there. He said that she was really alone and isolated at school. I hope that a little of that isolation was lifted by our friendship and shared goals for civil rights when we were together. I will miss knowing that she is no longer with us here, but her spirit and legacy lives on in my life and that of many other people.

In deepest sympathy,

Thank you for giving a single mother just moving to Atlanta a chance for success. You were such a gracious lady.

Dr. Renee Cunningham-Williams

October 21, 2005

I had the rare opportunity to meet Ms. Malone Jones while a graduate student on a conference visit to Atlanta, in the early 1990's. I remember my mom telling me before I left to "make sure you call Vivian when you get there"....you see, I have known about Ms. Malone Jones and her legacy my whole life, but had not met her before that Atlanta visit. She was a friend and classmate of my mom - Bessie - from Central High School in Alabama. I remember as a little girl, thumbing through the yellowed pages of their high school yearbook at the faces of many African American students coming of age during turbulent times for race relations in our country. As busy as she was, Ms. Malone Jones took the time to talk with me at length over the course of that weekend, sharing her pearls of wisdom, inspiring me to continue working hard and "get that degree" and encouraging me to be the best testament of God's immeasurable blessings in my life. She was particularly proud that I was working on my doctorate in social work and planned a research career embedded in addressing the social ills of our community -- a testament to the legacy she paved and the charmed life she led.

My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, Alabama high school classmates who will miss her presence at the upcoming reunion, and her countless friends, colleagues, and others who continue to be inspired by her legacy. Her spirit lives on in the many lives, including my own, that she touched with the courageous way she led her own life and the time she took from her busy schedule to be a mentor to young people. May the flame ignited by her many acts in the name of social justice, burn brightly...not only in Alabama, Atlanta, St. Louis...but on every street corner, bus stop, from the school entrance steps, through school doors and long halls, to the halls and seats of justice...across our nation and world...forever and a day. We will miss you -- Ms. Vivian Malone Jones.

My deepest and sincere condolences goes out to both of you and the entire family. I never met Mrs. Vivian Malone Jones but I knew of her legacy. As a young African American woman working in a racist environment and working as an educator, I pay homage to Mrs. Jones in my work everyday because I realize without her courage so many doors would be closed to us today had it not been for her sacrifice...we do not always realize what the mental and physical sacrifices are when someone like Vivian Malone Jones and others take a stand to open doors for a generation. There are no words that I can express on this page that would do justice to a woman of her statute. Thank you God for the life and legacy of this quiet and gentle spirit...may we remember her in our deeds and in our work; may we remember her too by being Trailblazers.

Thank you sister Vivian for standing up to exercise your privelege to receive an equal education. Your indomitable spirit lives on, and is an inspiration to all of us - those who have become complacent with the status quo and those who are striving to make a difference.

Thank you and Rest In Peace.

To the Jones Family,

I was very young when Mrs. Vivan Malone Jones went to register at the University of AL, where she had to wait so long to register because she was Black. Mrs. Jones had faith and she waited patiently by the door. And by Mrs. Jones waiting patiently by the door to register, therefore, she open many doors of opportunies for Blacks across America. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Jerry

I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Vivian Malone Jones at the " Opening Doors" 40th Celebration at the University of Alabama in the summer of 2003. I became speechless as soon as I saw her because this was the woman that I had heard about, read about and looked up to. She was my role model and here was in my face. After I talked to Mrs. Vivian Malone that day, I knew what my mission at the University was. To get a quality education here since my ancestors fought so hard for me to get one, make sure that minority students that came to this University knew that they were an asset not a burden and to get involved in many campus organizations to express my talents and build my leadership skills. If it wasn't for Mrs. Vivian Malone Jones and others, I would have not been granted this chance, for they paved the way for my generation. Thankyou Mrs. Vivian Malones Jones, for being a Fighter, Leader and mentor.

It was a blessing and a pleasure to know, meet, serve and worship with such a phenomenal woman! She exemplified Christ through her committment to our church, her character and her humble and loving spirit. Those whose lives are such an inspiration, leave a true legacy of love behind. Although she received rewards here on earth, her greatest rewards in heaven are now being realized as she spends her eternity with Jesus! Our thoughts and prayers are with her entire family.

Michael & Monica and the entire Jones-Malone Family,

We are deeply sadden by the passing of our neighbor, Vivian. We cherished our conversations at the mailbox, passing in the car or taking out the trash. We often talked about getting together to have lunch or go places together and never did. Oh, how we regret that! We wish you God's riches blessing now and always.

The news of Vivian Jones passing saddened my heart. I knew Vivian while working at EPA some years ago. My sincere condolences are with the family of such an extraordinary, wonderful woman, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend and mentor to so many. Her presence will be missed but her contributions will last beyond our lifetime. We may never know when God calls us into his kingdom, but we know he has welcomed Vivian with heavenly arms.

After my grandparents and parents, Sis. Jones impacted/inspired my life more than any other human being. As a Tuscaloosa, AL pre-schooler in 1963 and 1964, going to "town" in a car along what is now University Blvd, I would press my face to the car window or stick my head out looking for "her" (Vivian Malone) as she walked to class alone on the UA Quad in the shadow of Denny Chimes. When I saw her, I pointed and screamed with joy to my mother... THERE SHE IS!!!

She became the embodiment of what my grandmother had taught me literally from birth... "Get knowledge in your head and nobody can take it from you. Get Jesus in your heart and nobody can stop you." At that early age, I knew I would go to college and do many things with "no one able to stop me or hold me back".

For years, I tried to meet Vivian Malone but never could. Forty years after observing Sis. Jones from afar, I discovered, to this my joyous surprise, we attended the same church and she was the beautiful usher who greeted me on various occasions. I was able to meet her and let her know how she inspired me. Most of all, I enjoyed the personal and fun conversations we had. I will truly miss Sis. Jones; yet, I thank the Lord Jesus for her inspiring life and for giving me a desire my heart... to meet and befriend Sis. Vivian Malone Jones.
