Attended and briefly met GEN Westmoreland at a lecture in 1985 at the University of Notre Dame, Hesburgh Library. It was a captivating presentation and when it was an open forum, he addressed some pretty challenging questions from the audience. I remember his fundamentally sound and succinct answers to them all. I've forgotten many lectures in this life, but never that one. RIP, sir.

My brother, PFC. Michael Conrad Roell, Vietnam Casualty, 26 May, 1967, died wearing his country's uniform. He died well and brave. I believe General Westmorland to be a kind, honest and faithful soldier to the end of his days. I respect him, greatly and I would have shaken his hand warmly. I am sorry that I did not meet this Leader.

Gen. William Westmoreland was truly an amazing person with so much talent the loss is clearly ours. Prayers fill our hearts while singing praises to God asking him to let us never forget the love we have for this wonderful person gone from our lives never forgetting the joy we shared experiencing a great talent. My father Terry L. Kalber, whom passed away in 2008. Served in Vietnam from 1966-1977. He had always told me that that he started off as a radio operator until he was eventually promoted and started driving a Jeep for the General. Not thinking to much into it, I left it at that. I just got through meeting with a few gentleman from the local VFW. When talking about my Dad I couldn't believer what I was hearing....My Father drove for General Westmoreland!!! I am filled with so much emotion at the current moment I cannot sift through what it all means. I only wish Dad was still here so I could embrace him and remind him once more how proud I am to call him my Dad! I love you Dad!!

My father, William Charles McGehee (W.C.), served under General Westmoreland in Korea and was proud to have been his jeep driver. Daddy passed away March 28, 2010, and during the last two weeks of his life he talked again and again about the General, whom he described as a 'crackerjack leader' and a 'truly good man.' General Westmoreland had my father's respect until the day he died.

For General Westmoreland...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I served with the 2/7 Cav, 1st Cav Division in Vietnam. It was about March of 1967 that General Westmoreland came to our forward base camp and gave us a pep talk. We really saw him as a fine leader to come out and visit us.
Then in 1991, we got him flown up to be the keynote speaker at our Washtenaw County Vietnam Veterans Memorial on November 10, 1991. He was a soldier's leader. I was the Chairman of the Memorial and dedication. Being with him was an honor, he was still a soldier's man. He spent time with the families of those killed in Vietnam and allowed all the photos they requested. I kept in touch with him for years. We mailed him our country VVA newsletter until we heard that he had passed. Thank you General for being there for us.

I was lucky enough to shake General Westmoreland's hand as he left the stage in Chicago's Grant Park after the 1985(?)Welcome Home celebration and parade. I remarked as I reached for his hand "Sir, we finally won one today" and his response was "Hell, we won in Vietnam too". I can say with all honesty that that was the moment I felt the greatest amount of pride in being a Vietnam Vet. Thank you General. Will Gilmore, Madison, WI

My father, Msgt. (Ret) Clair Edward Richardson, was close friends with General Westmoreland in Vietnam. My father died March 28, 2005. The morning of the day he died, he talked about Gen. Our Dearest Mrs. Westmoreland, ‘Rip’, Maggie, Katherine, the Westmoreland ‘Family’:
Babes joins me in extending to y’all our deepest heartfelt condolences on the loss of our beloved, cherished General Westmoreland.
We share your loss and sorrow. There exist no adequate words to express our feelings.
Our General Westmoreland was without peers! He remains an awesome role model, a Soldier’s Soldier of the first-order, now and forever.
We join y’all in taking strength, knowing that our General Westmoreland left us all a stellar, perpetuating legacy that will forever serve as a challenge to each of us to attempt to emulate.
Our fondest, most revered memories will be of the Westmoreland’s frequently attending functions at The Citadel, taking great glee in meeting with serving cadets, encouraging, challenging them to do good things for themselves and for our Country.
Know that you and the entire Westmoreland ‘Family’ are in our daily thoughts, prayers and fondest memories.
‘Boot to Boot’, ‘All the Way’, Sir! and, Drive On!
Most Respectfully with Our Love,

In June 1961, my brother, Gen. Howard D. Graves (Ret) was graduating from West Point. General Westmoreland was the Superintendent at the time. Being number two in his class, Howard was invited to a reseption at the Superintendent's house along with his family. I, being in the tenth grade and a member of the local high school ROTC, knew about Army rank. During the reception, I was trying not to be noticed and found some cover behind a six-foot plant. Life was good there because I was safe. Shortly after finding cover, I felt a tap on my sholder and was amazed to see Gen. Westmoreland had joined in my place behind the plant. We talked about school and many other things that a young person my age would be concerned about. I am now over sixty years in age and can still see that Gentleman who cared enough to try to calm the fears of a young man who was away from his environment. The world lost a real gentleman and will not be the same.
