Briggie, my heart and my prayers go out to you and Freddie's son. I took a trip down memory lane, remembering the times, you would call to tell me of Freddie performing in the Bay Area. The times I would meet you and listen to Freddie. Sometimes I brought other friends of mine. My deceased father, John Stallworth, and brother Ernie love Freddie's music. I was not with you physically, but spiritually, my heart and family walked with you. My girls and grandchildren have been introduced to the album with you on the front from the '70s. Briggie, I've been where you are, so I know! Oh, I would love to read your book. Continue to look toward the hills, from which comes your strength, and may God Bless you and his son. I, on occasion, thought of Mr. Freddie Hubbard. Wondering where he was. I heard of him but first saw him at a college in The Bronx, NY. He performed at, I believe Lehman College. I played in a band that backed up singers (Black Ivory). I don't remember if they were there performing or just the band. I do remember very well Mr. Hubbard playing a solo for what seemed about 20 minutes. It was and still is a memorable moment that I'll never forget. I'm 58 years old and did not know he was much older than I. It would have been great to tell him of how he impressed me with his talent. May God Bless us all for what he's contributed to God's creation. I'm just finding out he passed. I just thought to look him up on the internet.

I discovered Freddie's music back in the 1970's when jazz fusion was becoming all the rage...at that time being an active trumpet player myself I envied his sound and to help celebrate the birth of my first child I bought a copy of his "Bundle Of Joy" album and played it over and over at the family party we had to welcome home the new baby...his music will always be a part of my life for sure...my condolences to his family...peace Freddie...

I was privileged to see Mr. Hubbard from a front-row seat at a venue in Pacific Beach, San Diego in 1977 when I was a starving student at UCSD; he was a fantastic talent. My dad also played trumpet as an amateur. He owned a 1938 Olds which has now passed to his grandson, my nephew. A great talent was lost at too early an age. Signed Kevin Masser, SDSU '78

Freddie Hubbard was an amazing musician whose legacy will live on through the ages. His brand of jazz was electric, thought provoking and inspiring. He will definitely be missed

Hearing the intense, sonorous opening notes of "First Light", there is no question Freddie Hubbard was a horn man of mythical proportions and soul. I enjoy(ed) them immensely.

to: family and friends of freddie hubbard
back in the 80s i was living out of my car for 6 months. i'd play on the street or do office temp jobs. one job was in this drab county building in downtown l.a. i found a black and white photo of freddie on flugle horn and i cut it out and taped it to the wall where i was working. man, i used to look at that photo all day for the couple of days i was there.
it really helped me in a tough time.
looking at that photo reminded me of what the music was all about and what my life was for: music!
thankfully, i'm doing much better. but G-d bless freddie for that and all the great, warm, soulful, brilliant music he gave us.
a real jazz O-riginal. peace and blessings!

Freddie will always be in my memory for I had my first important stint and recording with him in 1968 - 1970. I wrote 2 songs for his :SOUL EXPERIMENT:album I played tenor sax, George Cables on piano, Juny Booth on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. He will always remain in my memory bank!

When Freddie asked me to write a lyric on First Light in 1995 - I was honored that he gave me the assignment. I played his composition again and again until these words were revealed to me. When Freddie read them he told me how amazed he was that I hit the story about his agonizing decision to tear himself from NYC to follow his heart out to California -my words somehow, without knowing his personal story, described his great love for Brigitte and for his son, and my heart goes out to his family on this terrible loss of a great talent far too young.
Freddie recorded and produced this version in Chicago at Delmark Studios with Paul Serrano and Steve Wagner engineering - with Jodie Christian on piano, Gerryck King drums, Larry Gray bass, and Todd Herbert on sax. That day we were all in love with Freddie's wild swaggering bravado and we also loved his vulnerable and sensitive moments - he told us crazy stories about crazy days in Chicago. He was a warrior, personally fighting many hurtful injustices in the world, at times strategically his battles set off misguided missles and sometimes we and even he himself got caught in his friendly fire, but he did love the music and in a unique way he loved all of us.
We love you Freddie, you rascal, you, we miss you way too much and always will.
Love and Kisses,
Catherine
FIRST LIGHT (New Moon) / Lyrics by
Catherine Whitney / Music by Freddie Hubbard
Published by Hub Tones publisher Lori Goldstein NYC
First sight of the moon, barely seen,
the new moon, a miraculous sight
Behold the new light, it’s a sign of the hope of
the lovers’ new flight
No time but one,
no place but one, two hearts but
one, magically flying in
unison
Vision of love,
illuminous, the light that’s
shone, magic perception in
unison
First light of the day, it’s the dawn of the
dream of the love in your heart
The flight of the soul in a
time young and old, we will never
depart (not without our heart)
That was the place where time stood still,
knowing just what it all could be,
moving forward now to another
time, past before you now, and your future
left behind
It’s where we’re
going to and where we’re coming
from, traveling at the speed of
light, it’s the joy of everyone,
it’s the loving light of our
union’s flight
Its the joy of eveyone - the loving light - the loving light - its the joy of everyone - first light

Freddie loved these lyrics - he spoke of the box seat at the Hollwood bowl he was supposed to sit with Sting and be announced at Chris Botti's concert while Botti played Hubbards composition - he wanted Sting to sing the modal lyrics of First Light someday and was going to ask him but he never made it due to health issues. Whatever will be is now how it is supposed to be but I still wish that Freddie was here with us - I pray that he rest in peace and that he forgives, like we must forgive, the screwed up world and our screwed up reactions that can ultimately hurt us - please forgive us humans as we now return to eternity. Blessings to all of us - we love you Freddie.

I have many of Mister Hubbard's albums which I aquired over the years. I was first atrracted to his ARTISTRY when I was in high school in the last years of the 1950's and in 1970 during the spring of that year I was at the MARDI GRAS club in Mobile, Alabama a few block's from our home. I went to the juke box and came upon a selection that overwhelmed me with emotion snd awed me for it's technical and artistc amalgamation - - - it was "HERE'S THAT RAINY DAY", I stilll play Freddie's rendition of that song today and I never am left with trhe feeling that I won't be playing that tune again. I am a 3d generation brass player following my maternal grandfather Eugene "Son" Doyle and Fredericka Doyle Thompson my Mother. My Grandfather used to jam with Ferdinand Le Menthe (Jelly Roll Mortor) and my Mother was invited to join the "Sweethearts of Rhythm" in 1939 when she graduated from high school, but she went on to play in the concert band at Xavier U. in New Orleans in th early 1940's. My mom was a Hubbard fan too. I am a fan of many excellent jazz trumpeters, all of whom have their own unique perfomance styles and sounds, but Mr. Freddie Hunnbard (Frederick D. Hubbard) stands tall among them . His loss to our ears is a great loss, and now his concerts are for and with his jazz colleagues who've gone to the great beyond --- play on FREDDIE! We'll miss you!

Just a word to thank you for being an inspiration to me as a kid. You gave me inspiration to become a good musician and supported me by buying one of my first sets of drums. I appreciate you for that. You have accomplished great things in the jazz world. I stand in awe as I listen to your many great works of art. I am very proud to be your nephew. I love you and will miss you greatly.

When I was a year or so out of high school, a friend of mine turned me on to the album "Straight Life".
To say that I was blown away is an under statement, as the playing on this record was like nothing that my ears had heard at that time.
To a die hard rock'n'roller, hearing such improvisation was a revelation, with all the great players on that record giving their all for 36 minutes.
What was also amazing about this record, was the caliber of friends he recruited to play this music.
To have such alliances made him truly a wealthy man, for these men were united in presenting one of the greatest jazz recordings in my library.
We now know that he is reunited with Miles, Dizzy, Satchmo, Lee, and Maynard for all eternity.
And I am going to be the best person possible for the remainder of my life so I can join them in the "Great Jam Session In the Sky"
We thank God for the 70 years that he gave to Freddie, and for the gift of music that eminated from his horn.
May the family know that you have the collective hearts of jazz fans everywhere as you mourn his passing.
Please do not forget to to celebrate his life with a monstrous jam session sometime soon, and please record such a jam so that those of us who could not be there may share in such a celebration.

I am blessed to have had a dad who knew great musicians and great music and who shared with his little girl. As a result, I am equally blessed to have known the musical genius of Freddie Hubbard. The bright star no longer physically shines on earth, but it is certainly a lot brigher in the big band called eternity. And like that star, the memories will never ever fade.
Keep the many memories you have shared with your husband and father close to your heart. He was a great musician and man. You (family members) remain in my prayers. God bless you.

I wanted to convey my condolences to his wife and son by letting them know that he was always kind to me. Living a few blocks from Fat Tuesday’s in New York, I would see Freddie often. He would always have time to show me something and talk about music and the challenges of being a young man. He also told me to prepare myself to "get a day job" if this music thing didn't work out. Fat Tuesday's, Bradley's, The Village Gate, Slug's, Sweet Basil, and Club Marchal are only memories. The time I spent with Freddie will inspire me for the rest of my life.

When stuff like this happens in my life it kind of makes me think about my own mortality. Being a trumpet player myself; I think back to the time when I was a teen and Freddie, James, Philip and Larry were just a few of the twenty-something dudes that I wanted to be like when I grew up. Although I know time has passed, I still have that image of those young musicians in my head. That's why it's so hard to accept news like this. He's gone but never forgotten.

They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole

The life of an Artist is to live for their gift and live he did, never to be forgotten and made immortal by the music he gave to the world. And for that he made the world better place with his gift.
What more can one ask of one's life than for it to be said, that the world is better place to have had him with us, and forever in my (our) heart, where the music still plays on, than to say I never heard the soulful sound of his trumpet.
Thank You Freddie for your life, a life well lived, Rest In Peace.

I had the pleasure of hearing Freddie "Live" 5 times in my life. The last time being in the late 80's/early 90's in Tulsa Oklahoma of all places. I was in the pizza business there at the time. I called and asked if I could provide Freddie and his group pizzas and they said "sure, Freddie would like pepperoni and green pepper". I personally made Freddie's. Was one of the most incredible nights of my life.. I got to hang out with Freddie in his dressing room, talk trumpet, jazz and Lee Morgan then watched the 2nd show back stage. Freddie is the greatest jazz trumpeter of all time. No one will ever play jazz trumpet like that again. As a jazz trumpeter myself I have worshiped at the alter of Freddie Hubbard for 32 years.. His music and playing will live forever. God Bless Freddie Hubbard
