Renaldo Benson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 2, 2005.
DETROIT (AP) - Renaldo "Obie" Benson, a member of the legendary Motown singing group the Four Tops, died Friday. He was 69.

Benson died at a Detroit hospital, said the group's road manager, Fred Bridges. His death also was confirmed by Craig Hankenson, president of Producers Inc., one of the agencies that books dates for the Four Tops.

"It was not unexpected. He has been ill," Hankenson said.

The Four Tops sold more than 50 million records and recorded hit songs such as "Baby I Need Your Loving," "Reach Out (I'll be There)," "I Can't Help Myself" and "Standing in the Shadows of Love."

Benson's death leaves two surviving members of the original group: Levi Stubbs and Abdul "Duke" Fakir. The fourth original Top, Lawrence Payton, died of liver cancer in 1997.

They are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Four Tops began singing together in the 1950s under the name the Four Aims and signed a deal with Chess Records. They later changed their names to the Four Tops.

The group signed with Motown Records in 1963 and produced a string of hits over the next decade, making music history with the other acts in Berry Gordy's Motown lineup.

To the Family ~ Those we love left us with gifts in the form of memories that no one can take away. They gave us wisdom that we can still recall, companionship when we were alone, comfort when we needed it, and memories of their laughter and smile. These are gifts of love that are ours to keep. Though I do not know the family, I would like to extend my condolences. May the tender mercy that God has always shown be with your family now so that you will know that you are not alone. And may the prayers of others help in some small way to bring you strength, comfort and courage each day. Many words will be expressed, yet we know God can express and provide to you and your family everything that is needed to care and sustain your hearts. - Isaiah 41:10 & 13.

Happy Birthday Daddy!!! I miss you terribly. As we celebrate the day of your birth, we are thankful to God that we had so many wonderful years with you. You are the best Dad a girl could ever ask for. Whenever someone mentions how special you were to them, they always speak about that awesome smile!!! That smile lit up the room and made you feel warm and fuzzy inside. No matter what kind of day you're having, just the sight of you smile would make everything feel alright. You are the best and now you and your brothers are making beautiful music in Heaven. I'll cherish the memories always!!

I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to meet Obie. I met him in St. Petersburg, FL. after their concert with the Temptations. My best friend, siter-in-law of the late great David Ruffin (Joan) intorduced me to Obie. I was truly thrilled. He was very gracious and even graced us with beautiful music by his daughter. We hope to hear her sing again as Obie stated she was not yet published at that time. Obie and these gentleman were so very inspirational to me and my family and friends. I will always remember the bright exciting look in his eyes. He was so warm and friendly as were the rest of the members I met. I only regret I didn't meet the late Melvin Franklin of the Tempts that year due to his illness. However, I will always treasure meeting Obie. He was someone to look up to. Thanky you to his family for sharing him with all of us fans. We will always remember him with great love and much pride in his accomplishments.

While I truly am a big fan of the (Original) Four Tops, and I can appreciate that Levy Stubbs was the lead voice of the Four Tops, my heart belonged to Regnaldo "Obie" Benson. I connected with Obie's joyful and kind spirit. I never had the opportunity to meet Obie, but everytime I saw the Tops perform on television or heard Obie's voice on " She Used to Be My Girl", he (Obie) made me smile, feel happy and, more importantly, thankful to be alive. Obie's expressions of his love of life gave me hope. He was a rare human being, and I will miss him until the day I die. If there is a Heaven, Obie is there making the angles happy.

I saw The Four Tops for the first time in 1984, and the fourteenth and final
time in 1996. To me they were the definitive Motown group. Over the years,
I have attended many concerts of performers for whom an after show meeting
and greeting was accessible. Like a child for whom an autograph or just a
simple handshake and "hello" would make my day, I often took advantage of
the situation. Of all the times I did so, no one came across being as sweet
and cheerful, time and again, as Renaldo Benson. While I was saddened, of
course, to hear of his passing almost two years ago, I could tell he'd want me to remember
him with a smile. So, in return for his cordiality,
please allow me to send out my words of praise of "Obie" as both an artist and
human being. Yes, I know, I didn't really "know
him." He just made me feel like I was revisiting an old friend everytime I
saw him. I know if I were a performer, I couldn't be as friendly and
outgoing to fans on a one on one basis as often as he proved to be. The
man never seemed to forget how important his fans were to him, and never
looked down on them in a condescending manner.

His stage presence was unbelievable, considering by the time I saw him for
the first time, he had already been singing the same songs for twenty years.
He came across as if they were recorded last week, and he was eager to share
them with the world. Lighting up the stage as he did with his energy and
enthusiasm, he made the whole concert experience one of the most memorable
ones. We all know he had a great singing voice, and I must say, his
speaking voice as well was so charming, I always thought that if the Four
Tops ever broke up, he could make a living doing voice overs. If all of that is not enough, he cowrote what may be the greatest song in
the English language, Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." In my heart, Obie, Duke, Levi, and Lawrence will
always be a part of the here and now.

Having followed the music since I was 8 (when Baby I Need Your Loving was released) it was indeed an honour to fly to Detroit and be a part of the Tops 50th Anniversary celeration at the opera house. I was lucky to see three quarters of the original Four Tops at The Hammerstein ballroom in New York City in the late 90's. I saw the Tops live on many occasions, (the first of which was at a Murray The K show at the Brooklyn Fox) but the performance at the Hammerstein was without a doubt THE BEST EVER. Obie Benson was given the chance to really strech out on "When She Was My Girl" He had his own choreography and it seems that he added some additional lyrics and the crowd loved it. All four members of the group had their own special talent, Obie's was the beautiful bass and his gift for dance steps. I always thought that Obie was the co-writer of great song "What's Going On" but now I see that he was THE writer who gave Marvin Gaye and Al Cleveland a credit. The late Lawrence Payton was also a gifted writer as well as the second lead voice of the Four Tops. The Four Tops are an institution and I am looking forward to the contributions I know Theo Peoples, Ronnie McNair and Roquel Payton are going to give to this legendary group to bring the Tops to the top of another generation. I recently purchased several "FOUR TOPS" DVDs, which included their 50th Anniversary Celebration. WOOOW!!! This is when I fell in love with Mr. "Boom Boom" Benson. He captured my heart with his beautiful and fun loving spirit! When he made the statement about getting busy doing what you do best, it sparked a fire inside me to go for dreams I had been putting on hold. I didn't know at the time that he is no longer with us. I just want to say that I thank God for allowing his spirit to shine through Mr. Benson and into my life. To Mr. Benson's Family, The Four Tops, Friends and Fans, may God continue to bless and keep you all and give you peace. Love and Well Wishes!!!!!!!!!Annette

To the Benson family and the remaining TOPS I send my condolances. The time has gone by so fast. I've read that two of the sons are coming into the group,I think that's great. Roquel is Lawrences' son who is the other one? I know that Duke will carry on the legacy and make the right decisions. I pray for Levi that we'll have a little more time with him. It's hard to believe their gone and the empact it made on the group. But I say THE FOUR TOPS FOEVER.

I have loved the Four Tops since I was a teenager and that was almost as long as they've been together. I loved all of their music and their group. I saw them perform in 1997 in Las Vegas and I last saw them when they appeared in Atlantic City in 1998. I remember fondly talking about how much fun Obie looked like he was having on stage and I remember how well he danced. He will surely be missed by all who loved the Four Tops. From having the privilege of knowing the Tops personally, I can honestly say that each of them had/has something "special" that made me have love for them:

Levi= crazy; jokester

Lawrence= cool; laid back

Duke= professional; even keeled

Now even though I've known them ever since my Dad joined the band (1978), up until 3 years ago I didn't know how GENEROUS and KIND Obie was. I am saddened even more, because I never properly thanked him for all he did for me, my brother, and my niece (Zion).
