Mrs. Edwards was my first "boss" back in 1967 when I joined Motown as their first full-time Art Director at the tender age of 19. As head of the Graphic Arts Department ( She ran Gordy Printing before joining Motown) Mrs. Edwards had charge of the "look" of the "Motown Sound." She brought me to Detroit from Washington D.C. to design Motown's record Albums and afforded me the greatest opportunity imaginable. When Motown left Detroit for LA I left Motown for a career in advertising as one of the first black Creative Directors on Madison Avenue. She was a grand lady and an inspiration to generations and generations of talented young artists and musicians. Her legacy will last for as long as the memory of Motown exists in the world of popular music. Rest in God's Grace Mrs. Edwards- Harry Webber, Los Angeles, CA 2011

Please allow this old white guy to compliment this fine woman on showing the rest of us the value of nurturing and guiding young people beyond the bounds of our own immediate families. The statements by Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye attest to this. Now I don't have the reach that Ms. Edwards did, but I am a semi-retired engineer and I believe that I will remind the neighbors that their children can always come see me when they get "stuck" on their math homework.

I was a seventeen year old female (in 1967), and all I wanted to do was get on a bus from New Orleans, and make my way to Motown in Detroit. I wanted to make it because I could sing! Well, I finally got to Detroit at the ripe old age of sixty. Thank God the museum was there so my trip wasn't a let-down.
Thank you Mrs Edwards
Also! Now (in 2011), I am real clear that I am "not" the commercial singer I thought I was in High School.
Instead, I served 30 years in the military. Currently working on my PhD. The Motown sounds kept me encouraged/motivated throughout my life's journey.
Thank you, Mr Gordy too! You will alway be the true visionary in the family!

What a fine legacy of musical genius left after the Gordys. Someday the quality of that music will return, I hope. We just never know the people behind the scenes of greatness exposed. God bless Esther's family during their sad time.

It is with such sadness that I too mourn this loss. We are and have been touched by the Gordy legacy which spilled over into Toledo years ago. We will remember her for her fortitude in keeping memories alive through Hitsville. I have visited the museum and it was such a blessing to see history remembered. May she rest with the Lord and may "Motown" live on in all of our hearts. We are praying for you family.

Hymn
When storms arise
And dark’ning skies
About me threat’ning lower,
To Thee, O Lord, I raise mine eyes,
To thee my tortured sprit flies
For solace in the hour.
The mighty arm
Will let no harm
Come near me nor befall me;
Thy voice shall quiet my alarm,
When life’s great battle waxeth warm --
No foeman shall appall me.
Upon thy breast
Secure I rest,
From sorrow and vexation;
No more by sinful cares oppressed,
But in thy presence ever blest,
O God of my salvation.
Paul Laurence Dunbar
Mrs. Edwards is resting upon the breast of God with no sinful cares. May you use this fact to comfort you during this time of sorrow. May you also use all of the wonderful times that you had with Mrs. Edwards to further ease your sorrow. Mrs. Edwards will surely be missed by all who knew her. May she rest in peace.

I remember meeting Mrs. Edwards at the party of a classmate when I was a teenager. The party took place in the pool house at the Gordy Mansion on W. Boston Blvd. and she stopped in to say hello to everyone. She was a very gracious woman and I have always treasured the memory of that visit to the famed Gordy home. May God bless and keep the soul of Esther Gordy-Edwards and grant her family strength as they mourn her passing.

Esther was one of the warmest as well most wonderful women, that I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Along with her brother, Barry Gordy, she helped to make Motown Records one of the fastest growing small labels in the music industry.
It was an honor to know her, work with her, as well to know her personally as a very dear and loving close friend.
May she always live, in the memories of those that knew her as a very close and trusting friend and associate!

Her Journey's Just Begun
Don't think of her as gone away
her journey's just begun,
life holds so many facets-
this earth is only one.
Just think of her as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how she must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass way.
And think of her as living
in the hearts of those she touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost-
and she was loved so much.

STAR LIGHT
Why this world glows
Written in memory of
Esther Gordy Edwards
One day G-d placed a new star in the Heaven’s above. Soon the Angels all gathered to gaze and wondered at this newly formed star. For they could see the light of this star was still connected, very closely, to the earth below. And this star seemed to make the world itself glow brightly. The Angels asked the question, “L-rd, why does this star shine as brightly as it does?” The answer?
There are stars in the Heaven’s and stars here on earth
But it’s the stars in our lives that define what we’re worth
Shining with laughter and singing with love
They reflect the song playing from stars up above
Yes,
The people of love who light up our lives
Are more then we know, for they give strength as they guide
With their trust and the their faith and their unending ways
Their star out shines the sun on the brightest of days
And Esther,
She was a star, a sister, a friend
With a light and song that beams and amends
A bright filled earth mother who lived by her soul
Allowing others to shine and letting their star unfold
Yes, her star was a candle that could not be denied
Helping the songs of the Heavens be brought to our lives
Nurturing others to sing songs of life
But now
Something has come and shaken the light
Yet up in the stars, past the light in the sky
Her song sings with Angels in G-d’s Lullaby
Yet her deeds and her love they are lights here below
They continue to shine, as her star continues to glow
Because
She was a star among stars, the ones who give all the love that they hold
And that is why this world continues to glow
That is why this world continues to glow
And the Angels wept.
The Name Esther means Star
In Lasting Memory,
