Stephen C. Dury
AMHERST - Stephen C. Dury, 44, of Amherst, died Wednesday June 13, 2012 in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria after a sudden illness.
He was born December 10, 1967 in Lorain and had resided in Amherst for the last 6 years moving from Lorain.
Steve was a 1986 graduate of Admiral King High School in Lorain where he lettered in football for 2 years. He attended The Ohio State University where he earned his Bachelor Degree in Education. Later, he earned a Masters Degree in Education from Ashland University.
Steve was employed by Lorain City Schools as a Comprehensive Science Teacher for the last 22 years most recently teaching at Lorain High School.
Steve was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Lorain, the Lorain Education Association, the Ohio Education Association, National Education Association, AMVETS Post #47 of Lorain, Eagles Aerie #1442 of Amherst and the Beaver Park "Ghetto" Yacht Club in Lorain.
Steve enjoyed riding his motorcycle, boating, fishing and helping others.
He is survived by his son Stephen D. Dury at home, parents Stephen A. and JoAnne Dury (nee Almasi) of Lorain, sister Maryjo LoPresti, brother David (Gina) Dury, nieces Stefani LoPresti, Gabrielle Dury and Danielle Dury and nephew Peyton Dury, all of Amherst.
The family will receive friends Friday 2-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain where a Parastas Service will be held Friday at 7:00 pm. Panachida services will be held Saturday at 9:00 am in the funeral chapel followed by the Divine Liturgy at 10:00 am at St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, 2711 W. 40th St, Lorain. The Rev. Nicholas Rachford, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 555 Frantz Rd, Dublin, OH. 43017.

I am still in shock by Steve's passing. I know how close David and Steve were, they were more than brothers, they were best friends.
I remember when we were on the altar at church for Danielle's baptism and I was trying so hard not to laugh because neither Steve or I knew if we were supposed to continue to stand up there with Fr. Divis or sit back down. We kept looking at each other and then decided if we both sat down it would look like it was planned. And boy did he hate having to dress up that day. Such a nice, caring, humorous man. You will be greatly missed by your family and friends.

Steve was my first friend in college. He helped me move into the dorm on the first day and we were solid friends and companions from that time forward. He treated me like family and we even visited each others hometowns during the summer. We lost touch after graduation but he reached out and found me a few years back and I had gotten to enjoy his company once again, and looked forward to doing so again in the future. I was so very sorry to hear yesterday of Steve's unexpected passing. This loss will be felt by everyone Steve knew.

I attended school with Steve from Masson through Ohio State and remember him for his sense of humor (we actually often sat next to each other due to alphabetical order and sometimes got in trouble for laughing.)

Most recently Steve took the time to call me after my father passed away to express his sympathy. That simple act of kindness will not be forgotten nor will the great person Steve was.

I did not know Mr. Dury but I can speak of the impression that he left on my son. He would come home from school and say "Guess what we did in Dury's class today" or "you should have heard this story that he told today". I may not have learned the most physics or A&P from him, but he inspired people to be more than they imagined. You could always expect a smile and a good laugh coming out of Dury's class. Always sharing stories about his truck, his outdoor adventures and his boy.
