Heffron, Harold "Hal"
1918 - 2012
Died June 19, 2012 at Denver Health Hospital after a brief stay. He was 93 years old. Hal was a cryptographer in the service in World War II. After the war he became a journalist and worked as a copy editor for the Rocky Mountain News from 1954 to 1984. Hal enjoyed golf and also did volunteer work for the Cancer Society and Denver Adult Tutorial. He also tutored at St. Rose of Lima school. He was President for a term with the Denver Press Club. Hal was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Marge. He is survived by sons, Tim, Tom, and Steve; also grandson, Alex and granddaughter, Jennifer. A funeral mass is scheduled for 11:00 am, June 27th, at St. Rose of Lima Church, located at 355 S. Navajo St., Denver. The burial will follow at 1:15pm at Ft. Logan Cemetery at Staging area C. Donations can be made to the Cancer Society.

Hal was a pseudo Grandfather to me while I lived in Colorado. I was a teacher at Saint Rose of Lima and he befriended all of us. He was a kind and generous man. Hal was wonderful. Love, love, love Hal. Xoxoxo

I decided to try to look up my buddy Hal and get back in touch, and saw this. Hal was one of the most positive and gentle people I remember, always smiling, so attentive and gracious. There just aren't many people like him, a very special man. A really special life. My condolences to his family. I know he is especially hard to lose.

It was my absolute privlege to accompany Hal on the Honor Flight last October. It was an honor to have met him and spend many hours visiting with him. He was just a sweet appreciative gentleman. I will remember him always as we spent our time together going through the Holocost museum, he was so very moved by that experience. God Bless.

Hal was one of the true gentlemen in our business; he and Danny Gibson introduced me to the Denver Press Club and gave me an appreciation for what newspapers meant to this old town. I will always remember Hal as one of the finest colleagues I had.

I met Hal 45 years ago when I went to work on the Rocky Mountain News copydesk. Hal was the copydesk chief then. He was a true gentleman -- never heard foul language from him (no small matter in oldtime newsrooms where profanity was an art form), and he was extremely courteous. Moreover, he lived his Catholic faith by helping others in countless ways. God rest him.

As a little girl I loved to stay with my grandmother "Judie," when Uncle Hal visited. I would wake for breakfast as he came home from a round of golf. I always wanted to go with him but never woke up early enough I guess. My grandmother so loved and longed for his visits. She loved him so and many times she feared that she would see him for the last time. We all loved him as well. He took the time to visit with the many family members who gathered for our annual Heffron Family Reunions. We so appreciated his sons accompaning him these last years to East Dubuque so that he could attend. Our thoughts and prayers as with you all. Eternal Rest grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him.

Hal was the most wonderful uncle in the world! He kept in touch with relatives and friends forever and when they died, he connected with their children. He loved to come to the family reunion in East Dubuque, IL, where all his nieces and nephews looked up to him as the "Patriarch" of our family. This year would have been the first he missed in many years, just a week before his 94th birthday on July 1. We love you and will miss you so much, Hal!
