Paul Benedict Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 4, 2008.
BOSTON (AP) — Paul Benedict, the actor who played the English neighbor Harry Bentley on the sitcom "The Jeffersons," has died. He was 70.

Benedict was found dead Monday on Martha's Vineyard and his brother, Charles, said authorities were still investigating the cause of death.

Benedict began his acting career in the 1960s in the Theatre Company of Boston, alongside such future stars as Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino.

Benedict went on to appear in a number of movies, including a role as the oddball director in "The Goodbye Girl" with Richard Dreyfuss. But he was mainly known for his role as Bentley in "The Jeffersons," which ran on CBS from 1975 to '85.

Paul Benedict was a gracious and respectable person whose work in television has done so much to bring so much joy to many of us in those and these troubled times hard to deal with (2 Tim 3:1). Perhaps more will continue to have positive experiences from a wonderful work that this giving person has shared resulting in a positive impact and contribution to life and its anxieties.

Paul was such a polished actor. His humor and portrayal of the Jefferson's next door neighbor still bring a smile and chuckle to me when I think of him. Though no longer visable, his spirit and memory will never be forgotten, Regina. Heartfelt feelings to those near and dear to him from Linda and Stephen Saltman

The Jeffersons were too funy, When Mr Benedict would come through that door of the Jeffersons apartment and start speaking with that deep voice, he was funny. I miss that type of clean fun. To the family of Paul it's ok to grieve and cry, Jesus did when he lost his friend Lazarus. You have my deepest symphaty.

For Paul...the actor who played the English neighbor Harry Bentley on the sitcom "The Jeffersons,

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

The character of Mr. Bentley always made me laugh with his wit and his ability to redirect an intended insult to its sender (mainly George Jefferson). I watch The Jeffersons nightly on DVD and on tv reruns. I miss knowing that Mr. Bentley, along with other cast members are no longer around. Good night Harry, and goodbye Paul Benedict. You were one of a kind and greatly missed!

Them what has gone long on'st before, and strayed to let others have the floor,
On the stage of the world where the souls doth play, have bowed their heads and paused to pray,
For another bright light that has flickered and gone, another lyric run plumb out of song,
Another curtain, and one final bow. Another dressing room, empty now.
He joins those souls whose stars still glow, who have moved to the ranks of the long-ago,
Peace to you, Paul, from the pain and alone, find freedom to soar to your heavenly home.

Paul and I first met at Camp Cedar Crest in Green Harbor Ma. in the summer of 1949 0r 1950. A few of us campers pleaded with Paul to tell us stories which he did many times a day. His ability to conjure up and weave tales was phenomenal.

A few years later we both attended Boston College High School. After graduation we lost track of each other. To know him was to love him.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
