Phil Woods Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2015.
STROUDSBURG, Pa. (AP) - A jazz saxophonist known for touring and recording with Quincy Jones, Billy Joel and others has died. Phil Woods was 83.

Funeral director Philip Bensing says Woods died Tuesday in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, and his family plans to complete arrangements Wednesday for private services. Bensing owns Bensing-Thomas Funeral Home in Stroudsburg.

Woods played his last show Sept. 4 at Pittsburgh's Manchester Craftsman's Guild, using oxygen to complete the performance. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Woods announced he had emphysema and was retiring due to health concerns.

Woods had a solo on Joel's hit, "Just the Way You Are," and Jones says, "There was a very specific reason Phil played on nearly every album I've made since 1956" calling him "the best jazz also sax player there was."

Greatest alto sax man. Saw him at Storyville in NYC for a week straight. Bought him a few drinks and talked about music and what he thought of being compared to Bird. A great musician and a hell of a nice man to boot.
The licks he played always had me on the edge of my seat. And what a great reader, he said to me it was just a gift he had. Will miss him dearly. Love ya Phil

Enjoyed his many performances in LA during the 1980's. He collaborated with my sax/woodwind teacher, the late Bill Green, in presenting Master Classes when in CA. His artistry will be missed!

What a tremendous loss to the jazz world. Phil was a one-of-a-kind alto man. He truly developed a very recognizable tone, phrasing, and approach to his solos. He has been a favorite since "Warm Woods", his epic ferocity recording with Joe Morello and Gary Burton on "It's About Time", and many others in later years. He will truly be missed. Thankfully, I own a lot of his vinyl and CD recordings that I will always treasure. RIP Mr. Woods! Sincere condolence to the family.

My deepest condolences to the Woods family. Phil was an inspiration to me and my friends as teenagers playing in our high school jazz band. I had the good fortune of seeing Phil/Tommy and Phil/Brian every chance I could from Albany to NYC to Raleigh. I still listen to his music every day at work. A true master on his horn. He will be missed but his great sound will live on.

Dear Woods family: You have my deepest condolences. Phi was a master of the alto sax. I still play alto and at age 92, when I take a solo, I think about how Phil would play it and then I hear the music. Thank you Phil for all the wonderful music. To quote Phil, "We musicians are as close to God as man can be. We hear his voice, we read his lips, we give birth to the children of God, who sing his praise. That's what musicians are. I love that." He is now playing to God on a higher plain but memories of him will be forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Peace and love Phil.

May you find comfort in your many fond memories together, God's promise to undo all tragedy and the words of the greatest man who ever lived: "Two sparrows sell for a coin of small value, do they not? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father's knowledge. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So have no fear; you are worth more than many sparrows." I got to work with Phil on Clark Terry's Big Bad Band in 1973 upon his return to New York from Europe. The Wichita Tour was an incredible adventure - with great music and many nights of big fun - from Chicago to Detroit to Tulsa to Wichita. What a tour! What a band! Phil blew his head off on every solo and led the sax section (which included Jimmy Heath, Arnie Lawrence, Charles Davis and Ernie Wilkins) with great expertise. He was truly an amazing musician with awe-inspiring technique, musical ideas, and soul. He will be missed. His standard of excellence was always top shelf. Things I remember Phil saying and still use in my daily life are: Be a cultured person!; Play something new to challenge the listener!; Go home and practice 8 days a week for 24 hours a day. Then you may get somewhere!; I still am trying to find the right note; the best note!!

I began teaching master classes about five years ago - [JAZZ - The Real Deal]. The first class was always dedicated to the life, music, and teachings of Phil Woods. Phil was a remarkable musician and a truly great human being.

Rest in Peace Phil. Performing with you was certainly a high point in my musical life. Thanks for showing the way and God Bless You and your family during this difficult time.
