Considered by many as one of the most influential cricket personalities of his generation, Richie Benaud's strong captaincy and ability to blend powerful leg spin bowling with lower-end batting aggression helped restore Australian cricket to international prominence after a brief slump in the mid-1950's.

Following his retirement from playing in 1964, he become the sport's preeminent commentator, serving as the beloved face and voice of cricket for both the BBC and Australia’s Channel 9, where he worked until injuries from an auto accident interrupted his career in 2013.

Benaud announced in November 2014 that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer. He died in his sleep 10 April 2015.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott offered a state funeral but his widow Daphne declined, citing her husband's wish for a private funeral.
