Rob Ford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 22, 2016.
Rob Ford, the Canadian politician who was re-elected to the Toronto City Council in landslides and later became the city’s mayor for four years, died Tuesday, according to CNN. He was 46.

The cause of death was cancer. He was first diagnosed with a rare form of the disease in 2014.

Ford served 10 years on the council, from 2000 until 2010, the year when he was elected mayor. He campaigned on behalf of the working class, vowing to reduce the size of city government.

"Toronto's government has grown bloated and wasteful," he said in a campaign video. "It's time to stop the gravy train that provides luxuries and perks to politicians and rich contracts to their friends."

Although the outspoken Ford’s mayoral tenure was marked by scandal, fellow politicians expressed condolences.

“I have known Rob Ford for many years. He was a man who spoke his mind and who ran for office because of the deeply felt convictions that he had,” Mayor John Tory said in a news release. “His time in City Hall included moments of kindness, of generosity to his council colleagues, and real efforts to do what he thought was best for Toronto.”

Ford’s family released a brief statement announcing the death of a “dedicated man of the people” who devoted his life to “serving the citizens of Toronto.”

Fans, friends and relatives of Ford shared their condolences on social media.

“Uncle Rob, You have fought the good fight long enough and now can rest in peace. Love you and will forever miss you,” tweeted Michael Ford, the former mayor’s nephew, who serves on the Toronto District School Board.

With great shock and disbelief we have learned about Rob Ford's health issues some time ago, and now there is a sense of tremendous loss because of his untimely passing. He was a person completely dedicated to the people of his own city, but the impression spreads beyond Toronto's borders. For almost 20 years we have lived in the city of Vaughan, but hardly ever seen or heard much about what our mayors have been up to. We sincerely hope that whatever work was done by them benefited the inhabitants of our city. Yet, we have indeed taken note of many positive and progressive innovations conceived by Mayor Ford. Oftentimes, we wished we were living south of Steeles... He was a fresh wind, a true revolutionary, and it is tragic that he didn't have enough opportunity to implement all the changes that he had visualized. We offer our deepest condolences to his family and everyone who knew and respected Rob Ford. Rest in peace, dear Rob.

I never met Rob in person, but knew he was a very colourful Mayor. He always promised to stop the gravy trains, which he did. I can't think of any other politican who made good with their promises. I moved out of Toronto 5 years ago, not being able to vote for him. I do regret that very much.
Rob is where he needs to be now..away from the pain & suffering. His brother Doug will keep Ford Nation going, you can count on that.
I extend my condolences to the entire Ford Family. May God watch over & comfort you all.

In honour of the "man of the people".
It has been inspiring to listen to the many anecdotes from people he personally helped along the way--such a generous and giving man. Nor did I realize the extent of loyalty and love his followers felt for him.
He will be missed by many.
Rest in peace Rob.

God bless you Rob and your family.
May you have eternal rest.

When I was a young girl, I learned in school, about the difference between a Politician and a Statesman'; the difference being, a Statesman is in it for the good of the country, and a politician is in it for himself.

Rob, you were a true Statesman, always putting the people first, always unselfishly addressing their concerns. It will be hard to fill your shoes, in this respect.

You are a true Mensch'.

We may not have seen eye-to-eye on some issues, but Rob always carried deeply for his constituents. There was not a single issue we left unresolved. For that he will be sorely missed. For his family I'd like to leave this Irish Blessing:
May you see God's light on the path ahead
When the road you walk is dark.
May you always hear,
Even in your hour of sorrow,
The gentle singing of the lark.
When times are hard may hardness
Never turn your heart to stone,
May you always remember
when the shadows fall
You do not walk alone.
