Scott Asheton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 17, 2014.
NEW YORK (AP) - Scott Asheton, drummer for the influential punk rock band the Stooges, has died. He was 64.

Publicist Michele Adler confirmed Monday that Asheton died Saturday. No other details were provided.

Bandleader Iggy Pop posted on his Facebook page Sunday that he's "never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton."

Asheton was part of the Stooges when they formed in 1967 in Ann Arbor, Mich. His older brother, Ron Asheton, who was the group's guitarist, died in 2009. The Stooges released their self-titled debut in 1969.

"He was like my brother," Pop's statement read of Scott. "He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Ashetons have always been and continue to be a second family to me. My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life."

Asheton suffered from undisclosed illnesses in 2011 and was unable to perform at summer music festi vals in Europe with the Stooges. "He was on a flight to England when all sorts of hell broke loose," Pop told Rolling Stone in 2011. "Without proper medical attention right there he would have bought it. He got very, very good care from the British and all sorts of tests."

While the Stooges weren't a commercial success, they went on to become one of the significant bands in punk music. Their raw sound helped inspire the first generation of punk musicians. The band influenced acts from Patti Smith to the Ramones to Sid Vicious. The group landed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

After recording three albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Stooges split and Pop went on to a successful solo career. The band reunited for 2007's "The Weirdness" and "Ready to Die," released last year.

Asheton was born on Aug. 16, 1949, in Washington, D.C. He played drums for other bands, including Sonic's Rendezvous Band, the group led by former MC5 guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith.

Scott, you are missed! Last time I saw Scott was up on the stage where I gave him a nod (can't shake a drummers hand while he's playing) during the Ron Asheton Tribute at the Michigan. Rest In Peace Brother!

It is truly sad to lose a loved one to death, as humans we have no control over it...However Almighty God has, and soon he will get rid of death and the things that cause it. Yes life eternal for loyal and faithful ones who listen to God and do his divine will, have the opportunity to live as long as God lives... forever.

What can I say? Rock, you were at the top even when it appeared that you weren't. You were a gentle soul even when others thought differently. I feel blessed to have gotten to know you (albeit briefly) during our days in A2. Rock on Rock Action, you are the man...

My brother, John Cole, was one of Scott's good friends growing up in Lakewood Subdivision. I always loved Scott cause he was always nice to me and my friends.....and he was so good looking with the prettiest blue eyes I had ever seen. I am glad to have known Scott through all the phases of his life and please know he will be missed by all who knew him. My heart goes out to Kathy and his family, may he rest in the peace he deserves. Prayers for you all, Charlene (Cole) Obara

When I was in High School, Iplayed in a band that absolutely revered the Detroit music of the late 60's that wasn't Motown.
The Amboy Dukes, SRC, Stooges, Frost, 3rd Power, and, Savage Grace, made up a lot of the music we listened to, and, even played.
One of those songs was a Stooges song, "I Wanna Be Your Dog.
It is a very simple song, but, we delivered it with all the ferocity of a charging rhino, the way it was intended to be played.
I lost my interest in playing their songs, but, never lost sight of how integral they were to the Detroit music scene at that time.
All current/former fans of The Stooges are sad for the band & their families.
