Stuart Scott Obituary
Scott had fought cancer since a diagnosis in late 2007, the network said, but remained dedicated to his craft even as he underwent chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
ESPN President John Skipper said in a statement that Scott was "a true friend and a uniquely inspirational figure" and that his "energetic and unwavering devotion to his family and to his work while fighting the battle of his life left us in awe, and he leaves a void that can never be replaced."
Scott accepted the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYs in July. During his speech, he told his teenage daughters: "Taelor and Sydni, I love you guys more than I will ever be able to express. You two are my heartbeat. I am standing on this stage here tonight because of you."
On Sunday morning, NFL Network broadcaster Rich Eisen's voice broke as he reported the death of his good friend, with whom he worked on "SportsCenter" broadcasts.
"I love this man," Eisen said.
ESPN anchor Hannah Storm called him "our colleague, our friend and our inspiration" as she reported the news. On the network's NFL pregame show, Chris Berman said, "Stuart made ESPN what it is, he made us better people."

Born in Chicago, Scott attended high school in North Carolina. After graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1987, Scott worked at three TV stations in the southern U.S. before joining ESPN for the 1993 launch of its ESPN2 network, hosting short sports update segments.
He often anchored the 11 p.m. "SportsCenter," where he would punctuate emphatic highlights with "Boo-ya!" or note a slick move as being "as cool as the other side of the pillow."
Scott went on to cover countless major events for the network, including the Super Bowl, NBA finals, World Series and NCAA Tournament. He also interviewed President Barack Obama, joining him for a televised game of one-on-one. In 2001, Scott returned to Chapel Hill as the university's commencement speaker.
Scott was first diagnosed with cancer in November 2007 after he had to leave the "Monday Night Football" game between Miami and Pittsburgh to have his appendix removed. Doctors discovered a tumor during surgery. He underwent chemotherapy again in 2011.
Scott made a point of continuing to live his life — at work and outside of it.
"Who engages in mixed martial arts training in the midst of chemotherapy treatments?" Skipper said in ESPN's statement. "Who leaves a hospital procedure to return to the set?"
Scott is survived by his parents, O. Ray and Jacqueline Scott; siblings Stephen Scott, Synthia Kearney and Susan Scott; his daughters Taelor, 19, and Sydni, 15; and girlfriend Kristin Spodobalski.
As he accepted the award named for former N.C. State coach Jim Valvano, who died of cancer in 1993, Scott noted: "When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer.
"You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live," Scott said. "So live. Live. Fight like hell."

Watching you battle cancer was such an inspiration. You sure knew how to live life your way, the authentic way. I know you're in heaven, where you belong. Though I never had the chance to meet you on Earth, I pray I will get to meet you in heaven. My husband and I watched all the time. My mother passed away 9 years last month of cancer and it has not gotten any easier, I still have my moments so again we are so sorry, May God bless you and keep you and may he ease your pain.

Everytime I watch Sport Center I think of Bro. Scott, when I was in college in North Carolina (years ago) I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Mr. Scott, I remember him of being down to earth and good. At the time he wasn't the Great person in the regard of his profession that he was to become however, there was a realness about him even then. I cried that day in January it was my sister's birthday. I watched him daily and miss him each time I watch ESPN. I pray for his entire family as a father of a daughter I cannot concieve what he truly must of gone through. I have to believe he, Mr. Scott is in a better place. I now find myself dealing with Cancer. I don't see myself being brave like Mr. Scott I can only hope and pray that I can cope with grace and dignity as Mr. Scott. Rest in peace "Stu" I still cry!

I rush to watch your clips, what other Co workers you had at espn on YouTube wished both of you didn't have to go thru the pains. Stuart Scott you will be truly missed. When I heard of your passing on ESPN , It was so heartbreaking I could not even watch sports center for about a month. Just knowing I would never get to watch you on sportcenter, NFL countdown etc it was tough. Watching the the NBA finals and the ESPY'S this year's was tough not seeing you. So many things I can say positive Mr. Scott. Although I have never got the blessing opportunity to actually meet you in person I felt like I knew you in my heart and soul because I have watched and read about you throughout your career and you have definitely carried yourself with respect, dignity, courage and confidence and I love that in a man, especially in this day and time. I too just finished reading "Every Day I Fight", and I must say this book is one of the best I've ever read. It was so well-written, and Stuart Scott was so transparent and real. I laughed and I cried while reading this book; it was pivoting and thought provoking. I watched Mr. Scott's acceptance of the Jimmy V Award............speechless. I pray for his daughters and the rest of his family. Thank you God for Mr. Stuart Scott.

Stuart Scott is the reason I started watching ESPN at the start of his GREAT career there. He made it Cool while remaining a very professional brother. During his first years of his bout with cancer and was not on the air as much, I would ask friends "where is that COOL anchor on ESPN?" And for awhile I stopped watching because I didn't see him.
