Theodore Bikel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 21, 2015.
NEW YORK (AP) — Theodore Bikel, the Tony- and Oscar-nominated actor and singer whose passions included folk music and political activism, died Tuesday morning of natural causes at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, said his agent Robert Malcolm. He was 91.

The Austrian-born Bikel was noted for the diversity of the roles he played, from a Scottish police officer to a Russian submarine skipper, Jewish refugee, Dutch sea captain and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. He sang in 21 languages.

"No one loved theater more, his union better or cherished actors like Theo did. He has left an indelible mark on generation of members past and generations of members to come," Actors' Equity Association, which Bikel led as president from 1973-1982, said in a statement.

He also appeared on numerous television shows, recorded books on tape, appeared in opera productions and issued more than 20 contemporary and folk music albums.

He received an Oscar nomination for his 1958 portrayal of a Southern sheriff in "The Defiant Ones," the acclaimed drama about two prison escapees, one black and one white.

The following year, Bikel starred on Broadway as Capt. Georg von Trapp in the original 1959 production of "The Sound of Music."

But many viewers knew him best for his portrayal of Tevye in stage productions of "Fiddler on the Roof." Although he did not appear in the original 1964 Broadway version or the 1971 film, he played Tevye more than 2,000 times on stage from 1967 onward. His latest film was a documentary about interpreting the work of Yiddish author and playwright Sholem Aleichem, who wrote "Fiddler on the Roof."

Among his film roles, he played the grumpy Soviet submarine captain in the Oscar-nominated 1966 Cold War comedy "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming." He played Kissinger in the TV movie "The Final Days."

A prolific recording artist, Bikel also helped found the Newport Folk Festival in 1959, an event that has drawn hundreds of thousands of fans to Rhode Island over the decades and launched the careers of many notable musicians. He recorded 37 albums and sang with Pete Seeger and The Weavers.

Bikel, who jokingly referred to himself as "the poor man's Peter Ustinov," was 80 when he received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in 2005. Friends including Martin Landau and Ed Asner were among the fellow actors who flanked Bikel during the ceremony.

"Finally, Theo gets his due!" Asner said.

He spent much of his youth in Palestine and was fiercely devoted to supporting Jewish causes, as well as the Democratic Party and human rights groups. He was one of six leaders of the American Jewish Congress arrested while protesting in 1986 outside the Soviet embassy in Washington, D.C. over that government's restrictions on letting Jews leave the country.

Bikel did not consider his activism at odds with his work as a performer. In fact, he once said he thrived on the variety in his life.

"Professionally, I can count three or four separate existences," he said.

Born in 1924, in Vienna, Austria, Bikel moved with his family to Palestine when he was a teenager. While living on a kibbutz there, he discovered his love for drama.

"I often stood on heaps of manure, leaning on a pitchfork, singing Hebrew songs at the top of my voice — songs that extolled the beauty of callused hands and the nobility of work, which I was not doing too well," he wrote in his 1994 autobiography.

Bikel started acting in Tel Aviv's Habimah Theatre in 1943, then moved in 1946 to London to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Within a few years, he won a role in the London production of "A Streetcar Named Desire" with Vivien Leigh, playing Mitch, Stanley Kowalski's friend. It was the first of several high-profile collaborations between Bikel and scores of noteworthy performers in Europe and North America.

He made his Broadway debut in 1955 in "Tonight in Samarkind" and in 1958 was nominated for a Tony for "The Rope Dancers."

In 1959, he created the role of Capt. von Trapp in the original Broadway production of "The Sound of Music," playing opposite Mary Martin as Maria. It earned him a second Tony nomination.

As a folk musician, Bikel made his concert debut in 1956 at the Carnegie Recital Hall, and went on to write, perform and translate lyrics to music for the next several decades.

Bikel, who became an American citizen in 1961, said in his autobiography, "Theo: The Autobiography of Theodore Bikel," that one of the key moral dilemmas of his life was whether to return to his homeland in 1948 when Israel declared its statehood.

He chose to remain in London.

"A few of my contemporaries regarded what I did as a character flaw, if not a downright act of desertion," he wrote. "In me, there remains a small, still voice that asks whether I can ever fully acquit myself in my own mind."

Bikel was among the guests on Sept. 13, 1993, when Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat sealed their historic peace agreement with a handshake on the White House lawn.

Bikel also served as a delegate to the 1968 Democratic Party convention in Chicago, board member of Amnesty International, member of the National Council on the Arts, and president of the Associated Actors and Artistes of America.

Bikel is survived by his wife, Aimee Ginsburg; sons Rob and Danny Bikel; stepsons Zeev and Noam Ginsburg; and three grandchildren.

When I was 14 years old and he was on Broadway starring as Captain Von Trapp I wrote him that I would like to start a BIKEL fan club. He wrote me back and said "he was quite opposed to them and if I wanted to do something he thought worthwhile I could work for civil rights". I did. That was back in the early 60s. I can't imagine Bikel resting in heaven. I think he must be singing with those he loves in a beautiful place.

Some 40 plus years ago, shortly after I got married, I wrote Theo asking him for
the lyrics to the song "The Strangest
Dream" which I heard him sing at one of
his concerts. I really didn't expect an
answer from him but sure enough I got an
answer just a few weeks later. Not only
did he send me the lyrics but he wrote
me it was composed in 1953 by Ed McCurdy.
As famous as he was he took the time to
answer my letter. Just one small example
of what a "Mentsch" he was.

I met Theodore Bikel when I was about 17 years old at a house party in London while he was studying at RADA. He was the life and soul of the party. I well remember an anecdote he told about a visit to London that his father had made to see him.His dad's visit coincided with the Jewish holiday of Succot (Tabernacles). His dad told Theodore that he would like to go to a Liberal synagogue service. The two of them found the synagogue locked. After knocking and banging on the door a janitor appeared & asked them what they wanted. Theodore replied that they were there for the "srvices". The janitor replied in a heavy cockney accent "services, there aint no services ,today is a Jewish holiday "
I enjoyed watching Mr Bikel over the years . Will miss his presence greatly. May he rest in peace.

I had the pleasure and honor of seeing Mr. Bikel performing in a Connecticut dinner theater "Jaques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris" in 1974. At the conclusion, when the cast of four sang "If We Only Have Love," the audience was invited to join them on the stage. I was the first one up since a cast member was right there and pulled me up. After we sang the song "Kumbaya" style, holding hands, the cast greeted all of us on stage. I was a longtime fan of Mr. Bikel as both an actor and folk singer. At 6'4", he certainly had a physical presence. When he came to me, I just looked at him and said "I love you." In 1974, men hugging men was extremely rare, but he wrapped his arms around me, thanked me and I could literally feel all of my energy leaving my body and transferring to his. When I sat down, I was totally drained. It truly was a spiritual experience for and nothing like that has ever happened to me since then. I love his love of his Jewish heritage and all the energy he put into his music and acting. There will never be another Theodore Bikel. Thank you, Mr. Bikel, for the legacy you have left behind. Shalom.

I met Theodore Bikel years ago, when he performed at my college. A friend and I, great fans of his, had gone to the auditoium early to see if we could get him to sign our LPs. As we peeked out from behind a column, we heard a friendly voice boom, laughing, "Yes, it's him...you can come out of hiding!" He signed our records cheerfully, and obviously enjoyed our stories about getting free coffee and sandwiches at Meyberg's Delicatessen in San Jose when we sang his songs.

A lovely man, a great entertainer. We are all poorer for his absence. Peace and blessings.

Well, Theo, here we are.... Imagine -- one month to the day before you left us you traveled to NYC for one final tribute. I'm so glad you had that. So close to the end of this lifetime, you still had one more opportunity to be Theo Bikel. What a blessing. (And, speaking of blessings...Aimee!) How did you find the strength within you to pull that off? I'm sure it took too much out of you, but you're Theo, so of course you would dig down deep and bring forth what you needed.
Theo, the Earth-bound part of your existence has come to an end ~~ unimaginably ~~ but perhaps you are already beginning a new dimension of your autobiography. You know the last word of "Edelweiss," written for you: Forever...

My parents and siblings saw THE SOUND OF MUSIC on Broadway in 1960. Their gift to us was to share the program and cast album. In my memory, Mr. Bikel was the only Captain Von Trapp and his duet with Maria/Mary Martin of "Ordinary Couple" is the loveliest love song, ever.

My condolences to the family and good friends of this incredibly talented person.

IT IS A CRYING SHAME TO LOSE SUCH A GIFTED AND FUN ACTOR AS THEODORE BIKEL. WELL, WHO WOULDN'T REMEMBER HIM AS TEVYE, IN "FIDDLER ON THE ROOF?" OTHER ACTORS MAY HAVE DONE THE ROLE, BUT NONE STOOD OUT AS WELL AS HIM. ANOTHER PART OF MY PAST GONE, BUT I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HIM, AS I AM SURE, OTHERS WILL TOO! HIS VENUE TONIGHT, AND ETERNITY, HEAVEN! CAN'T BEAT THAT!!! I WAS GOING TO HAVE THE 'LIGHT A CANDLE' BUTTON LIT, BUT IT WOULDN'T WORK.

Alev ha-sholem!

When this Irish-Catholic college kid got hooked on folk music in the 1950s, I quickly discovered Bikel's albums, and started a lifetime of collecting them. I dragged my fiancée to just about every concert he did in the Greater Boston area.

Probably to the confusion of friends both Christian and Jewish, he became a rôle model for me in his command of multiple languages and his ability to convey the spirit of the folk he channeled--Sabra, Sovietskii cheloviek, Tsygan', Austrian Freiherr, etc. ad infinitum.

We have lost another giant of our time.
