Carib Nelson Obituary

Carib Miles NELSON An important member of the planet is gone. Our beloved Carib died December 15, 2007, four days short of his 51st birthday after a brief but valiant fight against cancer. How we will miss this gentle, kind, decent man, who loved his family, his friends, his work, nature, and the world. Carib grew up in Bellevue, and graduated from Bellevue High. While in high school he built his own sailboat and a harpsichord. He received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Stanford University. A creative and talented product designer, he invented and received a patent for a prosthetic hand. After volunteer development work and teaching in Indonesia, Carib returned with his wife, Sarah, to begin an 18 year long career at PATH. At PATH, Carib helped to design a pre-filled, non-reusable syringe, worked on safe injection techniques, medical waste disposable, and appropriate health technology in use throughout the developing world. He saved many lives and was able to indulge his life-long love of travel. In the course of his life he traveled to every continent except for Antarctica, often going to the remotest village to teach local health care workers how to immunize babies against disease. That adventurous spirit also inspired many wonderful family trips, including a special father/daughter trip when each of his daughters became teenagers. Carib was an outdoorsman and environmentalist who biked and/or kayaked to work from the Eastside to Seattle in rain or shine. He once cross-country skied to work after a snowstorm. Most of all, Carib was a man of integrity, intelligence, and compassion who touched many people's lives all over the world. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sarah; his daughters, Katie and Hadley; his father, Miles (Sondra); sisters, Karen and Maurine (Ed); brother, Marty; sister-in-law, Betsy (Mike); as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother, Tena. A celebration of his life will be held at the Great Hall at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Medina, WA, on December 18 at 3:00 p.m. The family wishes to thank the Group Health Hospice program, especially hospice nurse, Kim Motais, and home infusion therapy coordinator, Deary Panek, for their wonderful care of Carib.

Dear Sarah, Hadley and Katie:
Meredith spoke of Carib's amazing ability to find practical ways to solve problems and help others. With you three by his side, I am sure that he had the most loving support. I will never forget you, Sarah, arriving at Meredith's front door with a week old daughter, Hadley, and a plate of cookies to welcome Sophie to the world. Such kindness is an important strength. With our love to you,

Dear Sarah, Katie & Hadley,

I just read of Carib's passing, and wanted to share my deepest sympathy. Though we did not know each other well, while I was a member of All Saints in Bellevue, your lovely family was always a strong presence. This is truly a great loss for all who knew and admired your husband & father.
With my deepest sympathy and prayers for your solace,

It was with great sadness - and shock - that I just heard of Carib's illness and passing. Although we were classmates both in high school and college, I had - much to my regret - fallen out of touch with him in recent years. Carib's ever-present smile and calm (and calming) attitude were both refreshing and infectious. He was clearly loved, admired and respected by everyone he met. The world has lost a precious soul. However, Carib's exceptional spirit will be with us always.

My sympathy - and that of my spouse (Debbie Sanders Carlton) - go out to Sarah and the family.

Carib led me into a new technical area. He encouraged and supported me not only as a friend but also as a teacher. He contributed his time and knowledge to babies in developing countries. His intelligent and hard work saved countless children’s lives, especially those living in remote hard to reach areas. It was happy to work with him. I will miss him. My sincere condolence to his family.

My most profound sympathy goes out to you, Sarah, Katie, and Hadley. Carib often reminded me of The Little Prince. An adventurous spirit, gentle and wise, yet with a magical touch of youthful innocence. Most of all, he embodied the enlightenment expressed in, "what is essential is invisible to the eye." Rest in peace, Noble Prince.

Carib will always be an inspiration to so many, including Margot and me. Although we have been busy with our respective lives these many years, he and his family have often been fondly in our thoughts. For me, because of his love of the outdoors and because of one dreary day in college when he saw nothing but good in a long run in the rain, a day that he completely changed my perspective, Carib's optimistic spirit will be ever-present in the wonderful rain. Our deepest condolences to Sarah and the girls and all of Carib's family and countless friends.

With admiration,

Carib is a model of inspiration. He is and will remain a key member of our large family. He is one of the very few who bring peace and confidence, with whom the relationship doesn't stop at work but is true strong friendship.
Carib is simply magic. He is a dreamer and wanted to make this world better. We will keep moving in this direction with Carib's influence with us all time.
My sincere condoleance to his family.

The loss of this gentle soul among us is great indeed. He was always a source of warmth and peace in the hallways at PATH.

I'd also like to say that in addition to his many other talents, we should list that of photographer. He brought us back many marvelous visions of the people he worked with around the world, and though his great modesty may have kept many of his achievements secret from most of his coworkers until now, no one who picks up our publications or browses our photo archives can help but see the talent he showed from behind the lens.

I was honored to have helped Carib travel the world for over 10 years. He might have called me his favorite travel agent, but he was truly one of my favorite travelers. He had a love of life, family and our planet that will remain with me always.

Sarah, Katie & Hadley, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time. May you find the strength you need in your treasured memories of Carib.

Carib was a neighbor of mine growing up on Clyde Hill. I think back and remember him as a great friend. He even rescued me from being beaten up by school bullies! I am thankful to have had a friend like Carib growing up.

Dear Sarah, Katie, and Hadley,

Carib set an example to all of us with his deep compassion and his ability to let happiness come to him easily. When we are all feeling lost, maybe we can call upon these strengths he had to guide us through.

We are thinking of you now and we want you to know how brave and authentic you were in dealing with Carib's illness. Mostly, we want you to know that we will help you whenever you need it.

Love,

Renee and Amie
