GEORGE MOORE HELM January 17, 1931 - September 26, 2008
George Moore Helm, 77, passed away September 26, after a brave battle with cancer. George was born January 17, 1931 in Hammond, IN to Lester Moore Helm and Nellie Margaret Collar. He graduated from George Rogers Clark High School and also took business courses at Indiana University. George served in the U.S. Navy from 1949 - 1952, serving on the USS Consolation during the Korean War. On October 4, 1952, George married Evelyn Ann Latiak at the First Church of Christ in Whiting, IN. He retired from a career as a contractor and estimator. George and his family moved to Colorado Springs in 1997. He was affiliated with the American Legion, VFW, Hammond Jaycees, Ecumenical Social Ministries and Hammond Service Club Bowling League. George is survived by son, Barry (Jodianne Madl) Helm of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Phoenix (Nelson) Helm Simpson of Cedar Crest, NM; son, Brett (Sandra) Helm of Washington, DC; grandchildren: Brittany and Isaiah Simpson; goddaughters: Katie Crompton, of Rancho Cucamonga, TX and Jordyn and Brittany Jenkins of North Carolina; brother, Robert (Alice) Helm of East Chicago; sister, Verna Smith of Whiting; brother, Richard (Cathy) Helm of Naples, FL; sister, Judith Magdiasz Waugh, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; brothers-in-law: Walter Peterson of Dyer, Al Kras of Highland and John Latiak of Whiting; and sister-in-law, Jeannette Potasnik Roth of Torrington, CT. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Ridge United Methodist Church, 8607 Columbia Ave, Munster, IN 46321. Memorial donations may be made to First Steps Spirituality Center, 313 N. Tejon Street, Ste 18, Colorado Springs, CO 80903.
