Carl Peters Obituary
CARL W. PETERS AUSTIN, TX
Carl Wade Peters died peacefully in his Austin home on Sunday, September 28, 2008. Carl was born December 30, 1919 in Lynchburg, VA to Harry and Nell Peters. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Margaret. Carl is survived by his children: Cynthia Evans of Santa Fe, NM, C. Wade (Bonnie) Peters, Jr of Pensacola, FL and Sally (Kirby) Rassenfoss, of Houston, TX; six grandchildren: Scott and Craig Evans, Madeline and Katherine Peters, and John and Jeffrey Rassenfoss. Also survived by sister, Jean Buchanan of Titusville, FL. Carl was a proud alumnus of the University of Virginia where he was a member of Theta Tau, Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi engineering societies and the Raven Society. He also earned a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University. After graduating from Princeton, he went to work for Amoco Corporation, from which he retired in 1980. Carl was an active member of the church and served his community. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Austin, TX serving as Elder, and a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Texas City, TX. He remained an active member of the Austin Exchange Club, and was a member of Rotary International, and on the board of the Red Cross in Galveston County. In addition to his devotion to church and community service, Carl extensively researched his family genealogy and was a member of the SAR. He was an avid traveler and photographer. Carl was never without a book to read. Once his eyesight failed him, he turned to books on tape. He loved music and was always a joyful participant, playing the sousaphone in the UVA band, singing at church and leading songs at Rotary meetings. Carl was never without his CD player, MP3 player, or walkman. He also spent hours learning to use his computer, often chiding his children for being less proficient. The family would like to thank our friend, Cecelia Burke for her long term friendship with Carl and Margaret. We would also like to thank every member of the staff at the Westminster Health Care Center for the loving care they gave both Carl and Margaret and the staff at Westminster Manor for their compassionate support. A memorial service honoring Carl will be held Friday, October 3, 2008 at 10:00 a.m at the First Presbyterian Church, 8001 Mesa Dr, Austin, TX 78731. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the charity of their choice.
