Barbara Haum Obituary

HAUM--Barbara Rose, artist, age 45, my refreshingly brilliant, sincere and real friend will be deeply missed by me and my whole family. She has touched and enriched my life in so many ways. She will be with me forever and may her brave and loving husband, Henri Lustiger Thaler, and her brave and beautiful daughter, Talia, find comfort in knowing she will live on in our hearts and through the legacy of her brilliant artwork. My heart goes out also to her devoted mother and sister. Caryl Englander

Dear Henri, dear Talia,

I knew Barbara since her school days in frankfurt. She was somebody which impressed me with her brillant mind and her bubbling over with ideas. In the last three days till I know that she is passing I remind so many scene she was laughing very loud or discussing with me full energy. I miss her voice, her laughing, her positive view of the world and her power. It was a pleasure to me be be her friend.

Dear Henri, Dear Talia,

Even after six months have passed it is hard to believe we will no longer see Barbara in the path or at the ocean. We miss her very much.

Dear Henri and Talia,
From the moment I saw pregnant Barbara in the winter fields of Prospect Park with her beautiful Soma dog running like a zephyr, I thought she was the most elegant pregnant person I've ever seen. She was an amazing force of nature, and the world is greatly dimmed by her absence.
With love to you both,

Dear Henry, dear Talia,

I remember so well the days I could spend at your house and all the wonderful discussions. The house was vibrant with life - and I am confident that Barbara's great spirit is still there in all the memories. I feel very honoured to have met her and I will always remember her as a very creative, talented artist full of ideas and energy.

Wishing you all the best for the future.

Dear Harry and Talia,
its hard to believe that Barbara is not here any more. We spent so many wonderful times together met in New York, Darmstadt, Frankfurt, had the most amazing and exiting week in Singapore and now all the plans we made will not happen any more.
But its good to say that many projects worked out - she was part of Forest Art and Vogelfrei and thats the best way to stay in our minds with her wonderful, unusual and completely engaging performative ideas.
I want to tell you that Barbara will always be in my heart and that I hope we all will stay in touch. Anna would love to see Talia again soon.
All the best to you and love from Ute, Jürgen and Anna

The tremendous life force that was beautiful, brilliant Barbara Rose Haum was with me for 25 years. Our journey together began as young women in downtown NYC, and ended in Cornell Weill. This long journey took us to so many places , from Coney Island to Fire Island to Shelter Island, to Frankfurt, Paris, Montreal, to each others weddings, to the hospitals for the birth of our children, to her performances, to our kitchen tables, to our last headstands together two days before she was diagnosed. There were such grand days and countless everydays, all of which I am eternally grateful to have had with her. Barbara accomplished so much in her short life. She fought her illness with such dignity, strength, and courage- she loved life so much and held onto it so fiercely until her last breaths. I miss the sound of her distinctive voice. As I carry on without her, the love and joy we shared lives on within me.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Barbara's passing. She was and will always remain a person of exceptional beauty and talent in my heart. I have many very fond memories of Barbara-- an introduction to grilled sardines and apple wine in Frankfurt, riding bikes through Munster, air mattresses in Miami, her performance at BJ, and of course the writings of Julia Kristeva. Barbara was a brilliant thinker and visual artist. She had a way all her own of presenting her ideas and challenging others (to think!), and always done with such passion, knowledge, conviction - but what remains strongest in my mind, was how gentle she was. She was so generous with her knowledge and thoughts, as with her time. My heartfelt condolences to Barbara's entire family. You can know that she will always remain a presence in my heart.

for barabara's family
only today we have heard about her death - we are so sorry and sad. this is a black day in our life. we loved barbara very much we had so many plans to work together. we had started to create common "body-books" it is leaft with in the middle. we were dreaming to over come it together. we cant forget the optimism of this nobel woman. she had an inner beauty - shewas the most honest persona in the world. i cant imagine the world without this brilliant intectual artist - barbara we already missing you. i will exhibit here in israel a special art project with barbara's ideas and we shall continue to work on the common process just to remember barbara every-day. so long great friend you shall stay forever with us in our heart

Barbara became a close friend just about twelve years ago, when I used to live in New York. More than a friend, a kindred spirit... 'Her great sense of fun, generosity of spirit and sharp mind were so special. She'll always remain a part of me, of my life. I will miss her greatly. My heart goes out to Henry, Talia, Marianne and Anette.

Tröstende Worte

Geliebte, wenn mein Geist geschieden,
so weint mir keine Träne nach;
denn wo ich weile, dort ist Frieden,
dort leuchtet mir ein ewiger Tag.

Wo aller Erdengram verschwunden,
soll euer Bild mir nicht vergeh´n,
und Linderung für euere Wunden,
für euern Schmerz will ich erflehn.

Weht nächtlich sein Seraphsflügel
der Friede übers Weltenreich,
so denkt nicht mehr an meinen Hügel,
denn von den Sternen grüß ich euch!

Barbara was a very kind lady who was also funny, glamorous, good natured and always made me feel at home. I am very sad that she has passed away and know that she will be missed. I am also very sorry for Talia and Henri, who I know will never stop missing and loving her.

Hi

I met Barbara when she came to London England to stay with my mother and myself, for one summer in 1975. She was fun loving and a caring person. Rest In Peace Barbara.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sad time of sorrow.

Dear Dr. Lustiger-Thaler and Talia,

My daughter Sarah Leaffer was Talia's classmate in Hannah Senesh 5th grade class in 2006, and I was a colleague of Barbara's at NYU's seminar on"Jews/Religion and the Media" that same year. We are all profoundly saddened by Barbara's passing and will always remember her fine and gentle personality, and her great artistic talents. Talia, I am thinking of you with friendship and affection. Your mom is a wonderful person and artist.

May her memory guide your life and creativity.

I got to know Barbara through the working group on Jews, Media, and Religion at NYU. She brought so much to our group’s conversations; as an artist, teacher, and scholar, she epitomized not only our group’s range of interests, but also its approach to looking across conventional boundaries, expansive sense of inquiry, and commitment to collaboration. She taught us much by example as well as by word. I will miss her dedication, creativity, collegiality, and enthusiasm. We were very fortunate to have had the time to engage with Barbara and will treasure the work she left us to ponder.

Dear Mr. Lustger-Thaler and Talia,

I didn't know your Mom, but after the funeral I wanted to know more and more about her. She really is an interesting person and will always remain one. You look so much like her Talia, and have the same amazing creativity as she does.

Thank you for letting me come. Talia, your Mom really is amazing.

Love,

To Henri and family,
I did not know Barbara very well, but when we did meet at NYU, I was always impressed by her spark - the creative, witty, questioning, and sensitive aura she emanated. May her memory light many such sparks.

I have known and loved Barbara for over 25 years, ever since she burst into my life at a tea party on Chambers Street. She was one of a kind: classy, outspoken, articulate, honest and fun-loving. My life without her will never be quite the same. My heart goes out to Henri, Talia, Marianne, Annette and all the devoted family and friends she left behind. She lived her life beautifully, brilliantly and always with great conviction.
