Have just heard the tragic news of the passing of a very good man and a good friend who was so good to me all those years ago back in 1973 when I first move to New Plymouth as a school teacher. I had the good fortune to play alongside Val and many other good players and good men for the Clifton Rugby Club in Waitara. Val was a stalwart for the club and in life. God bless his memory.

Thank you Lynn Nugent, for putting our minds at rest .... there were some issues when spreading his remains at sea, and your message is a kind and loving one, much appreciated by his children. Xx

Dear Valentine,
I was walking on Pukehina Beach today and found part of a small wooden box which once held something very precious of yours. Having now found you through the memories your whanau have shared I feel I can reach out and let them know that you are resting in the place you loved. Rest easy and may the tide take you home.

We will always be grateful to this magnificent man for his bravery, compassion and honesty.
In November 1988 he was part of the dive crew who went out in horrendous conditions to recover the body of my brother, who was trapped in the wheelhouse of a sunken trawler. Val provided us with great comfort by explaining exactly where he was and why he was trapped. so on behalf of the Burton family , thankyou Val for gracing our world. To Val's family please accept our heartfelt condolences.
