Anchorage resident Alice Margaret Ewing Brewer died December 30, 2012 at Providence Hospital.

Alice was born February 14, 1931 in Elgin, Illinois to Dean M. and Mary (Cole) Ewing. She graduated in 1949 from Crystal Lake Community High School, where her dad had taught for more than 25 years. She attended Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin for two years and then graduated with a degree in Home Economics from Michigan State University in 1953.
While at Michigan State, she met future husband Joseph J. Brewer. They were married in Crystal Lake, IL on August 10, 1953. They lived in Wichita, Kansas where Joe worked as front page editor for the Wichita Eagle and Alice got her teaching certificate from Wichita State College.
In 1955 she followed her husband to Anchorage when he was hired by Bob Atwood at the Anchorage Times. She taught briefly at the Community College and the Licensed Practical Nursing Program. She was also employed by the City of Anchorage utility billing department from 1956-58 and was President of the Anchorage Home Economics Association in the 1960's.
Following statehood in 1959, they went to Washington D.C. where Joe worked as an assistant to Alaska's new Senator Ernest Gruening. There they adopted two babies. After Joe received his law degree in 1963 they returned to their home in Alaska and in 1964 adopted another baby.
Her interests included vegetable gardening along with raspberries, strawberries and her apple and cherry trees. "We had Yellow Transparent apples and pie cherries before most people knew they could be grown this far north" she use to say. She was also Executive Secretary of the Alaska Landlord and Property Managers Association from 1990 - 1996.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Jonathan and Shelley Brewer of Anchorage; son Dean Brewer of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law Mary and Dan Riordan of Anchorage; granddaughters Torrie Brewer, Jessie Brewer, Stephanie Riordan, Lindsay Riordan, Hailey Riordan and great-grandson Sean Riordan; all of Anchorage; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Joseph Brewer and her brother, William (Buzz) Ewing.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2013 at the First Congregational Church, 2610 E. Northern Lights Blvd., Anchorage. Reception to follow downstairs in Cary Mead Hall. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to a
