Kathie (Volk) Maloney, 63, passed away in Chugiak, Alaska on November 24, 2012, after a two year battle with brain cancer. She was born on March 2, 1949 in Cincinnati Ohio to August and Ruth Volk. She grew up in Madeira, Ohio and graduated from Regina High School in 1967 and Ohio Dominican College in 1971 where she earned a bachelors degree in mathematics. After graduation she returned to her high school alma mater to teach mathematics. In 1971 she married her high school sweetheart, Bob.
In 1975 she and her husband moved to Alaska where she continued her teaching career at Chugiak High School for 21 years. In 1984 she took a year off from teaching and returned to Ohio where she earned a Masters degree in Mathematics Education from Miami University. She retired from high school teaching in 1998 but continued to teach math as an adjunct professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage until she contracted brain cancer.
Kathie enjoyed birding, gardening, rafting, camping and fishing, but her true passion was teaching mathematics. Being a math instructor was not just what Kathie did for a living, it was a large part of who she was. She served as the math department chair at Chugiak High School for 15 years. She was recognized by her peers as the Teacher of the Year at Chugiak for the 1993-94 school year. She was the treasurer of the Alaska Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Alaska Math Consortium for over ten years. In 1993 she was selected to participate in the Woodrow Wilson Summer Institute on High School Mathematics at Princeton University where she walked in the footsteps of Albert Einstein. In 1995 she was recognized by the State of Alaska and the National Science Foundation with a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching.
She is survived by her husband Bob; her sisters and brothers-in-law Carol and Dick O'Donnel, Jane and Steve Burroughs, and Barbara and Gary Lytle and her brother and sister-in-law Richard and Chris Volk. She was preceded in death by her parents August and Ruth Volk; her brother Thomas Volk, and her sister Virginia Brose.
A celebration of life will be held at the Chugiak High School auditorium on Saturday, December 1, at 1:00 p.m. followed by a reception in the school cafeteria. In lieu of flowers please consider a contribution in Kathie's name to Hospice of Anchorage or the Anchorage Audubon Society.
