Bernie Edwards Obituary

Bernie was known as the best mechanic in South Texas, building Fast Hot Rods, Dragsters and Wheel Standing cars during the 1960s. Bernie traveled with his family to Alaska on vacation during the fall of 1969, and six months later became a full time resident of Chugiak. While employed by Equipment Services Ltd. he was invited to join the Local 302 Operating Engineers Union, where his Mechanical and Welding skills became well known at several companies such as Green Assoc., Taylor Rigging, Alagco and Wilder. He was regarded as the mechanic who could fix everything. Upon retiring from the union, he then worked Civil Service at the D29 Shop on Elmendorf Air Force Base before retiring once again. He then continued building classic cars: a 1937 Packard, 1935 Ford Pickup, 1934 four-door sedan chopped four inches and too many others to list. Among them was a non-running, bullet ridden wreck of a truck completed as a work of art that purred like a kitten. As a Korean War veteran he earned numerous medals, most recently the Korean War Veterans Memorial Thanks and Honor medal from the Ambassador of Korea in 2014. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Jackie Fave Roberts; and infant daughter. Survivors include a son, Bernie M. Edwards; two daughters, Lynnda J. Edwards of Chugiak and Beverly Edwards-Cathcart of Comanche, Texas; grandsons, Wayne D. Mackey and Christian A. Mackey; plus numerous great-grandsons; as well as his lifelong friend, Freddy Hall of San Antonio, Texas. His infectious laugh and homemade raspberry jam was loved by all. He was a loyal friend with a willingness to share his time, knowledge and skills. A Memorial Service will be held at the Chugiak Senior Center located in Chugiak, Alaska, on Sept. 22, 2015, at 6 p.m. Friends are invited to bring pictures and memories to share with the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Chugiak Senior Center or the Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department.

Bernie was a great friend, always willing to help a fellow Street Rodder. I met Bernie shortly after moving to Anchorage in 1983. Bernie helped me with the Restoration of my 1957 Chevrolet Belair in 1986. He rebuilt the Engine and worked on Chassis of my Car. He also built a Chevrolet Nova Wagon Wheel Stander, a 1953 Studebaker during the time that I knew him. His smile and helpful nature will be remembered by all that knew him.

We only had the pleasure of being with Bernie a few times since he lived a distance away from us. We did however get the wonderful opportunity to spend a week with him and family in Alaska where he did everything possible to make our visit memorable. He was a great man and surely will be missed. RIP Bernie we are sure you will be watching down on those you love.

Bernie and Jackie, his kids struck up a great and lasting friendship with my wife and I back in the early 80's. We so enjoyed the BBQ's and fun times we'd have at his home in Peter's Creek
Besides his great BBQ's, Bernie was also well know for his tamales and homemade ice cream along with a game of Five Handed Hearts. He was the one to beat but never felt sore even if he were to loose. It just gave him another challenge.
He helped me through many question & answer times while working on my '38 Ford and was always willing to get me going the right direction.
Bernie will be greatly missed for his love of both old cars and people, as well as our nation, his infectious laugh, his mechanical skills but most of all for his friendship.
Today he is resting in paradise with his loving wife Jackie. My condolences to his family.

My condolences to the Family, it's always a sad time when someone we love falls asleep in death. I didn't know Mr. Edwards personally but he must of been a very nice guy. May God's word be of comfort to you now and in the days ahead.
