Arlene Albano, 62 of Long Branch, died on Friday August 22, 2014 at St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Long Branch after a long, courageous fight with breast cancer. Born in Long Branch, Arlene graduated from Shore Regional High School, and received a Degree in Mathematics and Teaching from Montclair State College with a Minor in Art. She was President of the Beta Chapter of the National Math Honor Society, and was selected as the Student Advisor to the Dean of Mathematics. Arlene taught mathematics at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, and advised the Twirling Squad, taking them to first place in the State Championship. She was a founder and President of the Shore Area Math League.

After teaching, Arlene was a software developer of nuclear power plant simulation at Electronics Associates, Inc. in West Long Branch, and had worked on several defense contracts as a Database Design Engineer, Analyst and Software Specialist.

Arlene took part in the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" and raised more than $30,000. She was an active member of the Wellness Community, mentoring many cancer patients through treatment. She also worked with autistic children with the assistance of her therapy dog, Sheldon.

The family would like to thank Dr. Debra Ray and all the doctors, nurses and staff of Monmouth Hematology and Oncology, Monmouth Medical Center and BBR2 for making her journey with breast cancer as tolerable and pleasant as possible.

Arlene is predeceased by her parents Tony and Angie Albano. Surviving are her devoted sister Agnes, whom Arlene lovingly referred to as her "Guardian Angel," and brother-in-law Paul D'Angelo; her beloved nieces and nephew: ToniAnne and Corin Lucey, Michael D'Angelo, Gina D'Angelo and Alan Smith; grandniece and nephews; Devin and Makenna Lucey, Alexander and Nicholas Smith; and her loving, furry companion, Sheldon. Arlene felt blessed to have had a loving extended family, as well as many loyal, faithful friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 27 from 4 - 8 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Ave., (corner of Third Ave.), Long Branch. Funeral Thursday, 9 am at the funeral home followed by a 10 am Mass at Holy Trinity Church. Entombment will be at Woodbine Mausoleum in Oceanport.
